RASI/IUS NIELSEN, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
ICE-CREAM SPOON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
i of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Cream fiipoons; and I do hereby declare the f0llowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ice cream spoons, and particularly to the construction disclosed in my Patent No. 1,132,870, dated March 213, 1915.
l-leretofore it has been difiicult to quickly and conveniently locate the scraper in the bowl, due to the fact that it is necessary to mesh the gears of the operating mechanism so as to accurately position the scraper to set and revolve exactly Within the confines of the bowl.
According to my present invention, I provide manual means for turning the gears, hence the scraper, so the latter may be con veniently removed, and when replaced said scraper will be set to insure it revolving wholly within said bowl.
The invention also relates to the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
in the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved spoon, the scraper being shown in operative position in the bowl. .l ig. 2 is a similar view but showing the parts in position to remove the scraper. Fl 3 is a partial elevation, the scraper being shown in full lines in position to be removed, and in dotted position being removed. Fig. iis a plan view, the scraper being shown in position to be removed.
1, indicates a handle, 2, a bowl at one end thereof, 3, an open bearing between the bowl and handle, 1, a bearing depending from the handle and open at its bottom; 5, a shaft mounted in; the bearings 3 and 4:; 6, a scraper on the end of said shaft; 7, a gear wheel on the opposite end of said shaft; 9, a finger operatingmember pivoted to the handle and provided with gear teeth 10, which mesh with the gear wheel on the shaft; and 11, a spring which is attached to the finger operating member and the handle tohold the parts in normal position.
So far as the spoon thus far described is concerned, the construction is substantially the same as that disclosed in my before men tioned application, and it is not deemed necessary to describe the parts in detail to obtain a comprehensive understanding of my present invention.
To one side of the top of the finger memher 9, is a lug 16, provided with a threaded opening 17, in alinement with the side of the handle 1. Fitting in the threaded opening 17, is a screw 18, having preferably a milled head 19, the inner end of said screw normally engaging the side of the handle 1, which limits the movement of the finger element in one direction; consequently the movement of the scraper is also limited in one direction.
In operation, if it be desired to remove the scraper from the bowl, the screw 18, is operated to withdraw it through the perforated lug 16. This obviously, under the influence of the spring 11, causes the finger element 9, to turn, which also revolves the scraper. The teeth on the finger element are so related with reference to the teeth of the gear wheel 7, that the scraper will be turned up in alinemcnt with the'opcn bearing, as shown in Fig. 2. When this occurs the lug 16, abuts against the side of the handle 1, and holds the linger piece against furtl er rotation by the spring 11, and the teeth 10, and gear 7, are disengaged. The scraper having been brought into alinement with the open bearing 3, said scraper and its shaft can be moved back in the bearing to disengage the trunnion 20, from its bearing in the bowl, and also disengage the gear wheel 7, from the teeth 10, on the finger element. Then the scraper and shaft can be tilted and entirely removed from the spoon and cleaned or repaired as the case might be. To again assemble the parts, the scraper is inserted through the open bearing, and the shaft and trunnion 20 are placed in alinement with the respective bearings, and then moved forwardly into the latter. The gear 7, at this time is also in position to be engaged by the gearteeth 10, on the finger operating element 9. Now the screw 18, is turned, which also turns the finger element, and the scraper. Immediately the scraper commences to turn toward the bowl, it of course passes the open end of the bearing and is prevented from being disengaged. The screw 18, is further turned until the edge of the scraper comes into the plane 01 the top edge of the bowl as shown in Fig. 1. By this means the parts are so located that in every instance the gear teeth and the scraper always maintain the same relation ship so that the scraper an be quickly and conveniently replaced in the bowl of the spoon.
The improvement is of vital importance in a spoon of this type as it avoids the dilficulty heretofore experienced in assembling the parts. The screw effectually limits the movement of the parts so that if the scraper is to be removed it will be brought into proper position, while on the other hand, when assembling the scraper, the gears will be so arranged that the scraper will make a halt revolution when the finger element is pressed against the handle.
To reinforce the bearing for the trunnion :20, I provide a boss 21, which provides a substantial seat to receive said trunnion.
