ZIEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s inRecording Devices for Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to recording devices for locks and is designed to preserve a record which will show both the time at which the lock was operated and a mark to identify the key or other device used in operating the same.
It has been proposed heretofore to provide recording devices in connection with looks but these devices contemplated either the operating of the recording mechanism through the medium of the key or by means of special power mechanism, such as electrically operated devices. The key operated devices were largely, if not entirely, unsatisfactory, because the power necessary to 0perate the recording device was so great that it made the look as awhole diflicult to operate and interfered seriously with the manipulation of the keyl In the second form of device the addition of the electrical devices not only complicated the mechanism and rendered it very expensive but it was open to other objections, such as the difficulty experienced in keepin' the device in operative condition.
The object of the present invention is to overcome the objections to both forms of these devices and to rovide a lock with recording mechanism which will be operated by hand but through instrumentalities other than the key.
To this end it is a further object of the invention to provide a key-controlled handle or knob having means for operating the re cording mechanism and the bolt.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an operating device of such a character that the recording operation will be completed before the bolt begins to move, thus insuring a record of every operation of the bolt.

vide a recording device having a springactuated member for taking the impression, which member will be set and tripped by the action of the operating handle and further will be moved out of engagement with the paper by a further movement of said operating handle.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a mechanism of this character which will be simple and durable in its construction and positive in its operation, thereby enabling the same to be produced at a low cost and insuring an accurate record of each movement of the bolt.

In carrying out my invention I provide a lock having a bolt which is normally held against movement and in connection with this bolt I provide a recording device having clock-controlling means for setting it to record the time and having a key-controlled device to set it to record a key-identifying mark. Both the bolt and the recording mechanism are operated by a handle or knob, there being preferably one of these knobs on each side of the door, the knob on the inner side of the door being in the present instance free to turn and the knob on the outer side of the door being key-controlled. The recording device preferably comprises a spring-actuated plunger which is moved against the tension of its spring by the operating handle and is tripped to cause a record to be printed or an impression to be taken in any suitable manner. This operation is so timed with relation to the operation of the bolt that the recording operation will be completed before the bolt is released and, consequently, it is impossible to shift the bolt before the record is printed. The return of the operating handle to its normal position causes the plunger or spring-actuated blaten to be moved out of engagement with the paper or other material on which the impression is made and to be supported in this position so that the paper may be fed forward. These various operations may be carried out in different manners and by different mechanisms, but in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one mechanism embodying the invention which operates in a satisfactory manner.
As here shown the bolt and recording mechanism are mounted in a casing 1 secured to and in the present instance mounted on the inner face of a door 2. The lower portion of the casing is separate from the upper portion thereof and is hinged, as shown at 3, to enable the same to be swung downwardly to permit access to be had to the mechanism which is supported in the lower part of the casing, as hereinafter described. The various parts of the mechanism are mounted upon the rear wall a of the casing, which wall is rigidly secured to the door. Mounted within the casing is a bolt 5 which has one end arranged to be projected through an opening 6 in the side of the door and which is slidably mounted on the back plate t of the casing. The belt may be mounted in any suitable manner. In the present instance it is provided at its rear end with a longitudinal slot 7 through which projects a pin 8, the inner end of which pin is secured to the back plate 4. The forward part of the bolt is provided with a rearwardly extending pin 9 which enters a slot 10 in the adjacent face of the back plate. The bolt is provided with a forwardly projecting pin or stud 11, by means of which it may be operatively connected with the actuating devices to be hereinafter described. The bolt is normally held against movement in either direction by suitable d'etents. In the present instance these detents are shown as comprising pawls 12 pivotally supported at a point below the bolt and mounted on a common axis, as shown at 13. A spring 14 is connected with the pawls and tends to hold the same normally in engagement with the teeth 15 in the lower edge of the bolt. The bolt is preferably thrown by a suitable operating handle, such as a knob, and, in the present instance, I have provided two of these knobs, one being shown at 16 on the inside of the door and the other at 17 on the outside of the door. It will be understood that the term knob as herein employed is intended to include not only the round device commonly known as a door knob but any other handle or manually operated device which is permanently secured to the door and which has the functions of the knob of the application. The knob 16 is jo urnaled in the front wall of the casing and has an inwardly extending shaft or spindle 18, to the inner end of which is secured an actuating member 19. The knob 17 is mounted in the door and has an in wardly projecting shaft or spindle 20 which projects through the back wall 4 of the easing and has secured to its inner end an actuating device 21. The end of the one spindle is preferably recessed to receive the reduced end portion of the other spindle and thus retain the two spindles in alinement, but each spindle is free to rotate independently of the other.
The actuating devices 19 and 21 are exactly alike and each is provided with a recessed upper portion and has its outer corners extending upwardly to form in effect fingers. These fingers are so arranged that they will engage the stud or pin 11 carried by the bolt and establish an operative connection between the respective knob and the bolt to shift the latter. I
The knob 16 which is arranged on the inner side of th door is here shown as always free to turn and the bolt may be thrown into its operative or inoperative position at any time by the manipulation of that knob. The knob on the outer side, however, is normally locked against operation and is preferably controlled by means of key actuated mechanism. In the present instance this key-actuated mechanism is similar to the well known Yale lock mechanism, but instead of making the key barrel revoluble I provide a stationary key barrel, as indicated at 22, and mount the tumblers in the rotatable shank or spindle 20 of the knob 17. The insertion of the key, which is shown at 23, in the barrel 22 so positions the tumblers 2-1tl1at the knob and its spindle are free to rotate so long as the key remains in the barrel. It is necessary, however, that the holding pawls 12 may be moved out of engagement with the teeth in the lower edge of the bolt before the latter can be moved. I have, therefore, provided each of the pawls with an arm 25 arranged below the actuating devices 21 and provided with forwardly extending pins 26, which pins are arranged in the path of a part 27 which is engaged by and actuated by the first movement of either of the actuating members 19 and 21, this engagement being so timed that the paw'ls will be actuated before the actuating members engage the pin 11 of the bolt.
The recording mechanism is mounted in the lower portion of the casing and, in the present instance, the record is printed on a record strip of paper or the like. The printing form, which is indicated at 28, comprises the dial and movable parts of a clock face which are of such a character that they form printing surfaces, these parts being operatively connected with and driven from a clock mechanism, which is shown at 29. The clock mechanism and the printing members carried thereby are of a known construction and in themselves form no part of the present invention. Supported on either side of the form 28 are ribbon rollers 30 about which is wound an ink ribbon 31 which passes about guides 32 and is supported immediately above the form 28. This ribbon may be advanced from time to time in any suitable manner but as its use will be comparatively infrequent it is unnecessary that it should be advanced upon each operation of the recording mechanism and, consequently, I have, in the present instance, left the adjustment of the ribbon to be accomplished by hand at such intervals as may be desirable. A record strip 33, of paper or other suitable material, is carried by a storage roller 34, rotatably mounted at one side of the form, and extends about guides 35 immediately above that portion of the inking ribbon 31 which is positioned above the form. The end of the ribbon is secured to a rewinding roller 36 which is positively actuated and constitutes the feeding means for the record strip. The operative member of the printing device, which constitutes the platen, is shown at 37 and is in the form of a plunger carried by a rod 38 which is slidably mounted in a bearing 39 carried by brackets 40. Connected to the upper end of the rod 38 of the plunger is a yoke 41 slidably mounted upon the spindle 18 and having secured to its upper end two springs 42 which extend downwardly and are secured at their lower ends to the bearing 39. The plunger is connected with the operating handles in such a manner that when either of these handles is rotated the plunger will be moved upward against the tension of the springs 42 and means are provided for tripping the plunger to permit the same to move downward under the tension of the springs before the handle which is being operated has been moved far enough to release the bolt 5. To this end the plunger is provided with a rack 43 which meshes with a pinion 44 which also meshes on the opposite side of its axis with a second plunger 45, to the upper end of which is secured the part 27 which is engaged by the actuating members 19 and 21. This part is preferably in the form of a plate and is here shown as a flat surfaced plate of a length slightly greater than the length of the operating members 19, 21, but it will be understood that this plate may be of any character or shape which will permit it to perform the essential functions of the part 27 of the drawings. These operating members have their lower corners adapted to engage this plate and move the same and its plunger 45 downward and to this end are preferably provided with bearing rollers 46. The downward movement of the plunger 45 will impart upward movement to the plunger 38, thus elevating the plate 37.
To permit the plunger 38 and the platen 37 to move downward independently of the plunger 45 I have formed the rack 43 separate from the plunger 38 and have provided the plunger with a spring-pressed dog 47 which will be engaged by the rack as the latter moves upward and will cause the plunger 38 and the. platen 37 to be carried with the rack. Arranged above the dog 47 is a suitable tripping device which is so arranged that it will move the dog out of en gagement with the upper end of the rack and permit the plunger 38 and its platen to move downward under the tension of the springs 42. In the present instance this tripping device is in the form of a disk 48 carried by the spindle 18 and is fixed in operative relation to the dog, but it will be understood that the dog may be tripped or the platen otherwise released by any suitable means. The size and shape of the two actuating members 19 and 21 are such that sufficient downward movement will be imparted to the plunger 45 to elevate the platen and its plunger 38 far enough for the dog 47 to be tripped before the plate 27 engages the pins 26 and actuates the holding pawls 12 to release the bolt 5. Consequently, it is impossible to actuate the device far enough to release the bolt, and then shift the bolt by means of a knife blade or the like, with out permitting the recording mechanism to operate. hen the bolt has been thrown the operating devices may be returned to their normal position in any suitable manner. Preferably, however, springs 49 are secured to the plate 27 and return the same to its normal position as soon as the operating handle is released, thereby carrying the cooperating devices to their normal position. Means are also provided to lift the platen 37 out of engagement with the record strip and support the same out of engagement therewith. To this end the yoke 41 is provided with rearwardly extending fingers 50 which project above the forward edge of the plate 27 and are engaged by that plate just before the latter reaches its normal position, thus moving the yoke upward a short distance and retaining the same in this position. The paper is preferably fed forward upon each operation of the recorder and the paper feeding device is preferably operated by the operating device for the recorder. The reeord being rather large it is necessary that the paper should be advanced a considerable distance upon each operation of the recording mechanism. I have, therefore, provided the shaft of the rewinding roller 36 with a pinion 51 which meshes with a rack 52 slid- &
ably mounted on the back plate 1 and, in the present instance, connected with a bar 53 also slidably mounted on the back plate of the casing and having pivotally mounted thereon a dog 5st which is pressed inward by a spring 55 and when in its inward position lies in the path of the end of the plate 27. .lonsequently, the downward movement of the plate engages the dog 5d. and moves the bar 53 and rack 52 downward, thereby rotating the rewinding roller and advancing the paper. The length of the feed is regulated by mounting a pin 56 in the path of the dog 5-1: so that the dog will be moved outward against the tension of the spring when the paper has been advanced the desired distance. The inward movement of the dog is limited by a finger 57 projecting upward from the end thereof. The bar 5 is also provided with a shoulder 58 which extends above the end of the plate 27 and is engaged thereby upon the upward movement of the plate to return the feeding mechanism to its normal position.
In addition to recording the hour the recording mechanism also indicates whether the hour is a. m. or p. m. To this end a stud 59 is mounted on the bed of the form 28 and is provided with a printing surface 60 which is movable into and out 01 printing position by the rotation of the stud. This stud is connected with the clock mechanism in such amanner that it will be shifted from one position to the other once in twelve hours. Thus, when the mark appears upon the record it will indicate that the hour recorded is p. 1n. When the mark is absent it will be apparent that the hour is a. m. The mechanism by means of which this is acco i plished is of a known character and does not form a )art of the present invention. Briefly, it consists in providing the stud with a suitable actuating spring 61 which is controlled by a pawl and ratchet 62 driven by the clock mechanism, which causes the pawl to advance the ratchet at given intervals.
In addition to recording the time the mechanism will also record a mark to identify the particular key which was employed to release the operating handle or knob 17. To this end each key for the lock is of a different length. Mounted in the key barrel is a plunger 63 which is normally pressed outward by a spring 6% and is operatively connected with a form 65 which is in the form of a slide bar having on its face a series of marks. In the present instance these marks are all alike and are so arranged that when the plunger 63 is in its outer position, as when there is no key in the barrel, the operation of the mechanism by the inner knob 16 will cause a single one of the marks to appear on the record. If key No. 1 is employed to release the knob 17 the form bar ()5 will be shifted to bring two of the marks into printing position, and if key No. 2 is used the bar will be shifted to bring three marks into printing position. Obviously the character and arrangement oi the marks may be varied at will, it being only necessary that the movement of the bar should cause a different record to appear. T he connection between the slidable form bar and the plunger 63 may be of any suitable kind and is shown as a lever 66 pivoted between its ends and connected at one end with the plunger and at the other end with the slide bar.
The operation of the mechanism will. be readily understood from the foregoing description of the several parts thereof and it will be apparent that the manipulation of either handle or knob will cause the corre' sponding actuating member 19 or 21 to en gage the plate 27 and thus through the action of the racks and pinion elevate the plunger carrying the platen against the tension of the springs. When the tension on the springs is suiiicient to properly operate the plunger it is tripped. After the plunger has been tripped and, consequently, after the record has been made, the plate 27 will engage the pins carried by the pawls which hold the bolt against movement and move these out of engagement with the bolt, thereby releasing the.latter and permitting it to be moved when, upon the further movement of the knob, the actuating member engages the pin 11. As soon as the bolt has been thrown and the knob released the springs 45) return the several parts to their normal positions and at the same time move the platen out of engagement with the paper. The mechanism is of a simple, durable char acter; there are no parts which would be easily broken and the device requires no delicate adjustments. Consequently, there is little likelihood of difiiculty in keeping the device in operative condition.
Vhile I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purposes of illustration only and that I do not desired to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination, with a bolt, and a recording device comprising a springactuated platen, of an operating device having movement in two directions to more said bolt into and out of its locking position, and means actuated by the movement of said device in either direction to move the platen against the tension of the spring and to release the same to permit it to be moved by said spring.
2. In a lock, the combination, with a bolt, and a recording device comprising a springactuated platen, of an operating device having movement in two directions to move said bolt into and out of its operative position, and means actuated by the movement of said device in either direction to move said platen against the tension of its spring, to first release the same to permit it to be moved by said spring, and to then actuate said bolt.
3. In a lock, the combination, with a bolt, and a recording device comprising a springactuated platen, of a pair of knobs each operable independently of the other to move said bolt in either direction, and means actuated by the movement of either knob in either direction to first move said platen against the tension of its spring, to release the same to then permit it to be moved by said spring and to actuate said bolt.
4. In a lock, the combination, with a recording device comprising a spring-actuated platen, of an operating device having movement in two directions, a knob to i1npart said movements to said operating de vice, and means actuated by the movement of said device in either direction to move said platen against the tension of its spring and to release the same to permit it to be moved by said spring.
5. In a lock, the combination, with a bolt, of a recording device comprising a springactuated platen, a dog carried by said )laten an o aeratin member hay in movement in two directions, means actuated by the movement of said operating member in either direction to engage said dog and move said platen against the tension of its spring, and a device arranged to be engaged by said dog to release said platen and permit the same to be moved by said spring.
6. In a lock, a recorder comprising a movable member, a movable plate connected with said movable member and extending transversely to the line of movement thereof, a pivoted actuating device having parts extending on opposite sides of the plane of its axis and arranged to be moved toward or away from the respecti e portions of said plate when movement is imparted to said actuating device and to impart movement to said plate and said movable member, and means to operate said actuating device.
7. In a lock, a recorder comprising a movable member, a movable plate connected with said movable member and extending transversely to the line of movement thereof, an actuating device having movement in two directions and having parts arranged, respectively, to engage said plate member when operative movement is im-' parted to the latter, and means to operate said actuating member.
9. In a lock, a recorder comprising a movable member, a movable plate operatively connected with said movable member and extending transversely to the line of movement thereof, springs tending to retain said plate in its normal position, an actuating device pivoted on an axis extending transversely to the line of movement of said plate, said actuating device being capable of movement in either direction about said axis and having parts arranged normally in engagement with said plate, whereby the mox ement of said actuating device in either direction will impart movement to said plate and the movable member of said recorder, and means to operate said actuating device.
10. In a lock, a recorder comprising a movable member, a movable plate operatively connected with said movable member and extending transversely to the line of movement of said movable member, actuating mechanism comprising two actuating members mounted for independent movement about a common axis and having parts arranged to actuate said plate when either of said actuating members is moved in either direction, and separate devices for operating the respective actuating members.
11. In a look, a bolt, a recorder, comprising a movable member, a movable plate operatively connected with said movable member of said recorder and extending transversely to the line of movement thereof, an actuating device comprising a pivoted member having parts arranged on different sides of its axis to respectively actuate said plate when said member is turned in either direction and also having parts arranged on either side of its axis to respectively actuate said bolt when said member is turned in either direction, a casing inclosing said mechanism, and a knob mounted exteriorly of said casing and connected with said actuacting device to impart operative movement thereto.

tween said spring-actuated member and said plate, means for interrupting said connection before said actuating member engages the part carried by said bolt, and a part connected with said spring-actuated member extending above said plate and arranged to be engaged by said plate on the return movement thereof.

In a lock, the combination, with a casing, a bolt mounted'in said casing, a device to hold said bolt against movement, a pin projecting laterally from said bolt, a knob mounted exteriorly of said casing and having a spindle extending into the casing, an actuating member secured to said spindle and adapted to engage said pin when said spindle is moved about its axis, a plate slidably mounted on said casing and arranged to be engaged by said actuating member when the knob is turned in either direction, and a pin connected with said holding device and arranged in the path of said plate, of a re cording device comprising a spring-actuated member, a connection between said springactuated member and said plate to cause the member to be moved against the tension of the spring, and a trip device arranged to interrupt said connection before said plate engages the pin of said holding device.

In a lock, the combination, with a casing, a bolt mounted in said casing, a device to hold said bolt against movement, a pin projecting laterally from said bolt, a knob mounted exteriorly of said casing and having a spindle extending into the casing, an actuating member secured to said spindle and adapted to engage said pin when said spindle is moved about its axis, a plate slidably mounted on said casing and arranged to be engaged by said actuating member when the knob is turned in either direction, and a pin connected withsaid holding device and arranged in the path of said plate, of a recording device comprising a springactuated reciprocating plunger, a springpressed dog carried by said plunger, a rack slidably mounted alongside of said plunger and adapted to engage said dog, a connection between said plunger and said plate, whereby movement may be imparted to said plunger against the tension of its springs when said knob is turned in either direction, and a trip device arranged to move said dog out of engagement with said rack before said plate engages the pin of said holding device.

In a lock, the combination, with an actuating device, and a plate having movement transversely to its length and arranged to be actuated by said actuating device, of a recording device, a device to feed a web of paper to said recording device comprising a rewinding roller, an operative connection between said roller and said plate, and means to interrupt the movement of said roller before said plate has finished its movement.
24. In a lock, the combination, with a knob, an actuating device connected with said knob, and a plate having transverse novement and arranged to be engaged by said actuating device, of a recording device, a device for feeding a web of paper to said recording device comprising a rewinding roller having a pinion, a rack meshing with said pinion, a bar connected with said rack, and a pawl carried by said bar and arranged normally in the path of said plate, whereby the DIOVGIDGIlt of said plate will cause the paper to be advanced.

In a lock, the combination, with a knob, an actuating device connected with said knob, and a plate having transverse movement and arranged to be engaged by said actuating device, of a recording device, a device for feeding a web of paper to said recording device: comprising a rewinding roller having a pinion, a rack meshing with said pinion, a bar connected with said rack, a spring-pressed pawl pivotally mounted on said bar and held normally in the path of said plate, a trip device to move said pawl out of engagement with said plate before the plate reaches the limit of its movement, and a part carried by said bar and arranged to be engaged by said plate on its return move ment.

In a recording lock, a bolt, a recorder, key controlled devices for operating said bolt and said recorder, said devices including a knob having a spindle, a stationary key barrel arranged adjacent to said spindle, and key actuated tumblers extended into said key barrel and acting on said spindle to control the operation of said knob.

In a lock, the combination, with a bolt, a recording device comprising a member movable to different positions to produce different records, and a knob operatively connected with said bolt and said recorder, of a stationary key barrel arranged adjacent to said knob, key-actuated tumblers extending into said key barrel and adapted to control the rotation of said knob, and a keyactuated device mounted in said key barrel to impart movement to said movable mem- 28. the movement of said bolt and the operable part of said recording device, of a knob hav ing aspindle connected with said actuating member, a stationary key barrel arranged adjacent to said knob and said spindle, keyactuated tumblers extending into said key barrel and adapted to control the rotation of said knob, said recording device also having a slidable member provided with a plurality of printing surfaces, a plunger slidably mounted in said key barrel, and a connection between said plunger and said slidable member.

In a lock, the combination, with a recording device comprising a plunger, and a spring to move said plunger in one direction, of an operating device, a vertically movable member actuated by said operating device, a dog to connect said vertically movable memher with said plunger to move said plunger against the action of said spring, and means to trip said dog to release said plunger and permit it to move downward independently of said vertically movable member.

In a lock, the combination, with a bolt, and a recording device comprising a plunger, and a spring to move said plunger in one direction, of a knob, an operating device connected with said knob and arranged to engage a part carried by said bolt, a vertically movable member actuated by said operating device, a dog to connect said vertically movable member with said plunger, to move said plunger against the action of said spring, and means to trip said dog to release said plunger and permit it to move downward independently of said vertically movable member.

In a lock, the combination, with a recording device comprising a plunger, and a spring to move said plunger in one direction, of an operating device, a rack, means to actuate said rack by the movement of said operating device, a second rack arranged parallel with the first rack, a pinion meshing with the two racks to cause them to move simultaneously in opposite directions, a dog connecting the last-mentioned rack with said plunger, and means to trip said dog to release said plunger to permit it to move under the action or said. springs.
32. A recording device comprising a pluger, a spring to actuate the same, amember movable parallel with the line of movement of said plunger, an operating device for said movable member, a dog to connect said movable member with. said plunger, and means to actuate said dog to release said plunger.
