NTED STATES PATENT @FFQEQ' YSBRAND H. VAN WETZINGA AN D JOHNDONKER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ano. 22, 1916.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that we, YsBnAND H. VAN Wif/rzmoa and JOHN DONKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in latches, one object of the invention being the provision of a push but-ton released latch, especially adapted for use upon motor car and vehicle doors, the same being provided with a reciprocatory holt spring projected and combined with means controlled by a push rod or button for retracting the bolt.
A. further obj ect of this invention is the provision of a latch of this type, which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, and which is thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view and which will appear as the desc-ription proceeds, our invention resides in the details of construction hereinafter set forth and more particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure l is longitudinal section through the latch casing, showing the bolt and portions thereof in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on line t? '2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an internal View of one side of the casing. Fig. il: is a crosssection on line Ll-i of Fig. 2. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are detail views of various parts of the latch.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l0 designates the casing, which has mounted therein the two bolt guides ll and l2, the guide l fitting within the elongated opening or slot 13 of the bolt let to insure straight line movement of the bolt. The inner end of the holt is provided with the two terminals l5, each one of which upon one face is provided with the gear teeth 1G, which mesh at all times with the two gears 17, fast to the shaft 1S. This shaft 18 is journaled in bearings 19, and carries the segmental gear 20, with which meshes the rack bar 2l, mounted for sliding movement through thel opening 2). of the casing. The body of this rack bar is dove tail in cross section as at 23, where it slidably (its in the dove tail recess 2a of the guiding member 25 of the casing, the rack har having a push button arrangement, which when pushed inwardly will retract the bolt against the spring 26, and be itself projected by the spring and simultaneously with the projection of the bolt.
It will thus he seen that the locking bolt may be readily and easily controlled, and that al latch of this kind will be specially adapted for use upon automobile doors, carriage doors, and in fact any door that is required to be opened quickly.
lVhat we claim as new, is
A latch of the character described, comprising a casing having an opening in one side, al bolt slidable in the casing and through one end thereof and having an elongated slot, a fork on the inner end of the bolt and having rack teeth on the limbs thereof, a guide carried by the casing and working in the slot to assure a. straight line movement of said holt, a shaft ournaled in the casing above the'fork, rack gears on the shaft, two of said gea-rs meshing with the rack teeth on the limbs of the fork, a guide member in the casing between the limbs of the fork and having a dove-tailed groove, a tooth rack meshing with the remaining gear and having a portion thereof correspondingly shaped with the dove-tailed groove for sliding engagement therein, a push button on the last named rack and extended eX- teriorly of the casing through the opening in the side thereof, and a leaf spring fixed medially thereof to the casing and l aving its free ends working against the limbs of the fork.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
YSBRAND H. VAN vVETZINGi-. JOHN DONKER.
