To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAROLD L. TERHUNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deans, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Trip Attachments for Sulky-Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a foot tripping attachment for sulky plows, and more particularly to a novel form of foot trip mechanism adapted for use in connection with what is commonly lmown as two-way sulky plows, embodying both right and left hand breaking plow structures, which are alternately moved into plowing position, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a foot operated tripping attachment by means of which the breaking plow structures may be easily and quickly moved into a plowing position without the use of the hands of the operator, permitting the use of at least one of the hands of the operator at all times for the managing of the team used for pulling the plow.
Another object of this invention is to provide, in a foot trip attachment as specified, a structure which will impart an initiative movement to the part to be lowered upon the operation of the foot lever, thereby decreasing the amount of initiative power necessary for the operating of the foot trip.
Another object of this invention is to provide means which may be adjustably supported by the frame-work of the plow for limiting the downward movement of the tripping lever and consequently the plow standard or beam and breaking plow structure.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, 1 and 2 designate the crank axles of the two-waysulky plow which have supporting wheels 8 mounted upon their outer spindle ends and have plow'beams 4c and 5 attached thereto, respectively- Left and right hand breaking plows 6 and 7 respectively, are attached to the beams 4t and'5.
A hand lever structure, generically inclicated by the numeral 10 is provided for rockmg each of the axles 1 and 2 for lifting the plows 6 and 7 out of a plowing position or for lowering them into a plowing position. The lever 11, has an extension 12 formed thereupon, upon which extension a collar 13 1s formed. The collar 13 is adjustably held, by means of a set screw 14, upon the axle 1. An extension or web 15 .is formed upon the lever '11, which is mounted over a bolt 16 carried by the plow frame for pivotally mountlng the lever 11, so that when it is swung, it will raise or lower the axle 1 and consequently the beam 4 and plow 6. A quadrant 19 is rigidly supported by the plow frame and it has teeth, indicated at 20, formed upon its inner concave end, as is clearlyshown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A sliding dog 21 is carried by the lever 11, and it has a tooth 22 formed thereon, which engages certain of the notched teeth 20 for holding the lever 11 in different adjusted positions. The ordinary type of hand gripping mechanism, indicated by the numeral 23, isprovided for sliding the dog 21 downwardly for releasing the lever for swinging movement. The tripping mechanism 23 includes a bar 24:, which is slidably carried by the lower end of the lever 11, and is connected to the dog 21 for movingthe same downwardly upon operation of the tripping mechanism 23. A spring 25 is provided for returning or moving the dog upwardly after the tripping mechanism 23 has been released.
The invention proper consists in a foot operated tripping mechanism for moving the bar 24 downwardly for moving the dog 21 downwardly to permit of the swinging movement of the lever 11. A U-shaped strap is provided, the legs of which are positioned upon opposite sides of the lever 11, the bight portions spanning the sides of the lever. The U-shaped strap 30 is connected to the bar 24 by a bolt 31, which extends through a slot 32 formed in the sliding bar. The leg 33 of the U-shaped strap 30 is connected to a bar 34 by means of the bolt 31 as shown at 35. The bar 34 is also substantially U-shaped having its leg 36 longer than the leg 37 which is connected to the U-shaped strap 30. The leg 36 is attached to the angled end 38 of a bar 39. The bar 39 has its ends 38 and 40 bent transversely to the main body portion of the same and pivotally connected to the upturned end 41 of the axle 2 and the bracing arm 42 which is attached to the frame of the plow and the axle 1. A bar 45 is connected to the angled end 40 of the bar 39 and extends forwardly of the plow frame. The forward end of the bar 45 is connected, as is shown at 46, to the foot lever 47. The foot lever 47 has its upper end 48 angled to assume the proper position for convenient operation by the operator of the plow. The lower end of the foot lever 47 is bent trans versely to the main body of the lever, as is shown at 49, and it extends through one leg of a stirrup 50, being rotatably seated in a sleeve 51 which is positioned between the legs of the stirrups 50. The stirrup is attached to a depending U-shaped bar 54 of the plow structure. A spring 55 is attached to the angled end 40 of the bar 39 and to a clamping structure 56 which is mounted upon the axle 1. The spring 55 is provided for moving the foot lever 47 and the bar 45 to their normal position after it has been depressed by the operator.
A spring 57 is attached to the collar 13 or the set screw 14 and may be attached to the frame of the plow at any convenient point forwardly of the axles 1 and 2. The spring 57 is provided, so that when the foot lever 47 is operated for releasing the dog 21 to permit of the swinging movement of the lever 11, the spring 57 will impart an initiative movement to the lever causing the lever 11 to swing rearwardly after the dog mechanism has been operated by the operation of the foot lever 47.
A stop mechanism, generically indicated by the numeral 60 is attached to the quadrant 19 for limiting the downward swinging movement of the lever 11. The stop mechanism 60 comprises a plate 61, which has its angled end 62 attached to the quadrant 19 by bolts 63, which permit of the adjustable connection between the plate 61 and the quadrant. The plate 61 has its outer end which is free from the angled end 12 shaped to form an L in side elevation, as is indicated at 64. The vertical side 65 of the L 64 is provided with an opening 66,
through which the horizontal portion 67 of an angled rod 68 extends. The angled rod 68 also extends through an opening 69 formed in the quadrant and is positioned in the path of the lever 11, so that the lever during its downward swinging movement will strike the protruding end of the hori- Zontal portion 67, which will arrest the downward swinging movement of the lever 11. A spring 70 is coiled about the horizontal portion 67 and has one end engaging the inner surface of the vertical portion 65 of the L 64 and the other end engaging a collar 71, which is mounted upon the horizontal portion 67. The spring 70 acts for antomatically forcing the end of the horizontal portion 67 through the quadrant 19 and in the path of the lever 11. The horizontal portion of the L 64 acts as a stop for engagement with the vertical end of the angled rod 68 for holding the end of the horizontal portion 67 out of the path of the lever 11.
The structure heretofore described, is duplicated upon the right hand side of the plow for lowering the plow beam and the right hand plow 7.
In the operation of the improved foot trip attachment for sulky plows; when the lever 47 is depressed or pushed forwardly it will move the bar 45 forwardly and rock the angled bar 39, causing the same to rock the U-shaped strap 30 and move the bar 24 for moving the dog 11 downwardly upon the lever 11, permitting the lever to swing free. hen the dog 21 is moved downwardly, which will move the projection or tongue 22 out of the notches formed in the quadrant 19, the spring 57 will act for automatically moving the lever rearwardly for lowering the plow 6 or beam 4. After the lever has been started in its rearward movement by the spring 57 the weight of the plow and standard will continue the rocking movement of the axle 1 and the lowering move ment of the lever 11, until the lever strikes the protruding end of the horizontal portion 67 of the angled rod 68, which will limit its downward movement.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and of the method of operation of the improved foot trip attachment for sulky plows will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, while in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, it is to be understood that certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a sulky plow structure, the combination with a plow controlling hand lever having a slidable dog carried thereby for engagement with a quadrant for arresting the swinging movement of said lever, a slidable bar carried by said lever and connected to said dog, of a pivotally mounted foot lever, a plurality of bars connected to said pivotally supported foot lever, a U-shaped strap connected to certain of said bars and to said slidably supported bar for sliding said slidable bar and said dog mechanism upon operation of said foot lever for moving said dog out of engagement with said quadrant to permit of the swinging movement of said lever.
2. In a sulky plow structure, the combination with a plow controlling hand lever having a slidable dog carried thereby for engagement with a quadrant for arresting the swinging movement of said lever, a slidable bar carried by said lever and connected to said dog, of a pivotally mounted foot lever, a plurality of bars connected to said pivotally supported foot lever, a U-shaped strap connected to certain of said bars and to said slidably supported bar for sliding said slidable bar and said dog mechanism upon operation of said foot lever for moving said dog out of engagement with said quadrant to permit of the swinging movement of said lever, and a spring connected to the lower end of said lever for imparting an initiative downward movement to the lever upon the sliding operation of said dog;
3. In a sulky plow structure, the combination with a plow controlling hand lever having a slidable dog carried thereby for engagement with a quadrant for arresting the swinging movement of said lever, a slidable bar carried by said lever and connected to said dog, of a pivotally mounted foot lever, a plurality of bars connected to said pivotally supported foot lever, a U-shaped strap connected to certain of said bars and to said slidably supported bar for sliding said slidable bar and said dog mechanism upon operation of said foot lever for moving said dog out of engagement with said quadrant to permit of the swinging movement of said lever, a spring connected to the lower end of said lever for imparting an initiative downward movement to the lever upon the sliding operation of said dog, and means carried by said quadrant for limiting the downward movement of said lever.
4:. In a sulky plow structure, the combination, with a plow controlling hand lever having a slidable dog carried thereby for coaction with a quadrant for controlling the swinging movement of the lever, of a stop mechanism carried by said quadrant for limiting the downward swinging movement of said lever, said stop mechanism including an angle plate attached to said quadrant, and a slidable angled rod carried by said plate and adapted for projection through said quadrant for having its end positioned in the path of said lever, and a spring coiled about said rod for normally holding it in the path of said lever.
