SELF-CHARGING SIPHON.

[application filed July 11, 19142.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM P. STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philzu'lelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self- Charging Siphons, of which the following is specification.
The invention relates to siphons, and more particularly to the class of self-charging siphons.
T he primary object of the invention is the provision oi a device of this character wherein liquids can be transferred from one vessel to another, or the heavier liquid can be separated from the lighter liquid, or *ice verse, without disturbing or mining the some, or stirring up dregs if present therein, the device being especially useful for household purposes, yet it may be used in laborstories, stores, or in tact anywhere Where e siphon is used.
Another object of the invention is the provision of u siphon of this character which is novel in form, positive in operation, and durable.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of e siphon of this character which is simple in construction, light in Weight, yet strong, and one which can be manufactured at a mininuu'n expense.
iVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the the cl: im hereunto opp the several Specification of Letters Patent.
Putenteu 232,
Serial No. 850,355.
through the mouth of the bottle A substantially the depth of the cream contained therein, while the longer end 11 is exterior of the bottle and is formed with a branch nipple 12 which is ungularly disposed with respect to the longer end 11 of the tube B to present a substantially Y-shaped terminal portion, and to this nipple 1:2 is connected at compressible bulb 13, While fitted on the eX- treniity of the longer end 1 of the tube B is a cup having its bottom -\vull formed into a flexible flap valve 15 which is adapted to close the extremity the longer end of the tube 11 on the production of suction therein under the action of the bulb 13.
The device is for general household use in separating the cream from the top of a bottle of milk, or for transferring vinegar from one vessel to another Without stirrih up the dregs other foreignmatter present therein. 1Cl0f\"8"81, it is to be understood that the siphon can be used for any purpose required of an ordinary siphon.
To use the siphon it is'held by the Y- shaped end between the two lingers of the right hand, the bulb 13 is pressed with the thumb, thus expelling the air from the bulb, and thereafter the other end of the said tube is inserted in the bottle of milk to the depth that it is desired to remove the cream, the tl'uunb then being removed from the bulb, which resumes its original shape, producing a suction causing the closing of the valve 15. The cream, during the expansion of the bulb, is thus drawn into the tube B until it reaches the nipple 12, then by the weight of the cream and atmospheric pressure the valve 15 opens and the cream is discl'iarged and continues to ilow from the tube as long as the short end of the tube is immersed and kept higher than the valve 15 at the outer end thereof. it is of course to be understood that the nipple 12 must be at a greater distance from the top of the siphon than the open end of the tube, and that the bulb should have the same cubical area as the portion of the siphon from the inner end of the nipple 12 to the open end of the shorter leg portion 1.0 thereof. in this Way the liquid will be prevented from entering the bulb, which desirable, owing to the difficulty of thoroughly cleaning the inside of the bulb.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation 015 thedevice will be clear? understood, and therefore a more ext-ended explanation has been omitted.
Vfhai; is claimed is: In combination with a siphon, a cylindrical cup completely closing the and 0f the longest limb of the siphen, said cup having the maior norbion 0f its bottom Wall J- L 1 x L .L razed hum the nouy 01 L110 cup. 10 In 'testnnnny whereof i am); my snguniure m presence of two wim sses.
