Each check, as it is dropped between the guides, does not necessarily pass between the printing .couple immediately., but, as hereinafter described, is restrained momentarily and automatically advanced at such a time that the raised characters on the printing:r roll will be impressed against the back of the check. YFurthermore the printing roll and the bed roll normally out of Contact and are brought into contact only momentarily as the check is passing between them, thereby keeping the surface of the latter free of ink.'
