To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANmL T. FINKBEI- Nrn, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Freeport, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in illuminating llevices, of which the followingi 1s a specilication.-

This invention is an improved device for illuminating the interior of -a cabinet containing a sound reproducing machine.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple device which may be placed at a convenient location with a sound 'reproducing .machine cabinet, and having means whereby the portions of said cabinet contiguous to said device, may be completely illuminated, to enable the operator to readily see the record, the stylus and its support, and the record controlling devices. I

A further object is to provide a device of the character mentioned having means whereby the source of illumination is automatically turned on or ofl', by the opening and closing of the cabinet, respectively.

A further object is to provide a portable device of the character mentioned, which may be placed in position within any of the types of cabinet now in general use, without cutting or marring the same, or altering the positions of any of 'the parts.

The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a cabinet for containing a sound reproducing instrument, which cabinet may be of any desired construction, 'the same beingY conventionally illustrated.

The invention is in no way affected'by the type of sound vrepreducingA mechanism, and for purposes of illustration a sound repro ducing device of the disk type is shown conventionally, said device comprising the disk supporting platen 11, the stylus 12, and its adjuncts, and a dislr record 13. y Located within the chamber 14, ofcabinet 10, containing the platen 11, is a box or cas- Aing 15, which may be ofany desired shape and constructed of any suitable material. As shown the casing is substantially rectangular in shape and provided with a. door 16, preferably hinged at one end, as indicated at 17, and normally held in closed position b y a latch 18. Extending upwardly from the top ywall of the casing, is a supporting -wall 19, for alamp socket 20, said wall being suitably braced by an angle piece 21. A reflector of any suitable type, supported in any desired manner, is provided. ln the drawing` the reflector is illustrated as comprising a hood 22, attached to the edge of the supporting wall 19 and extending forwardly over the lamp 23, and is provided with a flange 21attached to the top wall ofthe casing 15. Said hood serves to protect the lamp, and also as a i'efiector.

in any suitable or desired -manner-l Asv shown in the drawing, a dry battery 25 is employed, one pole of which engages a spring contact arm 26 attached to one end of the casing, and the other pole engages a contact stud 27, attached to the other end ofthe casing. The' contact spring 26 is connected with one of the contacts of the lamp socket 2() by means of a conductor 28. The other contact of the lamp socket is connected by a suitable conductor 29 with the stationary switch stud 30, attached to the top of the casing. The contactI stud 27 is connected by means of a conductor 81, to a resilient switch arm 32, preferably formed of spring metal and attached to the front wall of the casing as indicated at 33. The arm 32 extends through a suitable opening in the .door 16, and is normally held in contact with the stud 30 by means of the resiliency of the metal. the switch arm 32 is bent upwardly as indicated at 34, and then outwardly to form an actuating arm 35, which, when the casing is placed within the chamber 14, overlies the riilie outwardly extended terminal of' edge of the contiguous wall ci said chamber, so as to bc engaged by the cover oi1 the cabinet, when moved to closed position. Said lamp is so positioned, and the redector is so sha-pcd, that the chamber Mis illuminated in such manner that the 'light will shine upon the platen 1l, the stylus l2, the dish 13, if in position upon the platen, the starting lever, and other adjnncts of the Asound reproducing machine Just soon as the machine is placed in operation, the cover of the cabinet is closed in the usual manner, coming into engagement with the actuating arm 35, and moving switch arm 3Q to break the circuit. The parts remain in this position until the cover is again raised.

It 'will be understood that While the invention herein described is practically designed for use in illuminating cabinets oi' sound reproducing machines, it is not limited to such use, but itmay be employ/ed :tor any other illumination purposes of Which it may be capable, Without departing from. the spirit thereof.

Having thus explained the nature of my invention, and described an operative manner of construct-ing and using the same, although Without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all ci', the forms of its useT what l claim is l. An illuminating device of the character described comprising a casing shaped to be placed Within the cabinet of a sound reproducing machine, a. supporting Wall attached to the exterior ci said casing, a lamp attached 'to said supporting Wall, a hood also -attached to said supporting Wall and yextending over said lamp, said hood being provided with a iiange attached to the contiguous Wall of said casing, means Within the casing for supplying electricity to the lamp, and a switch Within-the casing for controlling the circuit to the lamp, said switch having an arm projected through one Wall of said casing.
