Description

w. A. F. URBAN.
SECURING DEVICE.
APPL |CAT|ON FILED FEB. I2, 1915.

WILLIAM A. F. URBAN, OF YOAKUM, TEXAS.
SECURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Application filed February 12, 1915. Serial No. 7,868.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. F. URBAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yoakum, in the county of Dewitt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Devices; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel and efficient pin or bolt having a head at one end and a pivoted locking bar at the opposite end adapted to be moved angnlarly with relation to the pin or bolt to secure the latter against removal.
Another object is to provide a securing device including means for reliably securing the pivoted bar in locked and unlocked position.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, showing the application of the securing device to a clevis. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the pin or bolt, partly in section. Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 2, taken at right angles thereto.
Referring to the drawing in detail, where in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the shank of a bolt Or pin having a flat head 6 at one end and a longitudinal recess or bore extending inwardly from the opposite end. The recessed end of the shank 5 is formed with diametrically opposed slots 8 in which is positioned a locking bar 9. The bar 9 is pivoted adjacent one end in the slots 8 on a pin 10 extending transversely through the recessed end of'the shank.
The pivoted locking bar 9 is formed upon opposite sides and in one end with notches 11 adapted to receive the-pointed end of a member 12 slidably mounted in the longitudinal bore 7 and normally retained in engagement with the pivoted end of the looking bar 9 by the tension of a spring 18 engaged at one end against the inner end of the longitudinal bore 7 and at its opposite end over a reduced extension 14 of the slidable locking member 12. The end of the slidable locking member 12 which engages with the adjacent extremity of the pivoted locking bar 9 is tapered to provide an edge 15 which is adapted to engage within the notches 11 and the edge of said member 12 is concaved, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, to prevent rotational movement of the member within the bore of the shank 5. The corners of the pivoted end of the looking bar 9 are preferably rounded so as to permit free pivotal movement thereof.
In use, the shank 5 of the securing'device is positioned through a clevis or other object to be secured by moving the pivoted locking bar 9 to the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 2, and after the shank has been properly positioned the locking bar is swung to the full line position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be understood that the spring actuated locking member 12 will engage within the notches of the locking bar and thus reliably secure the latter in either locked 0r unlocked position.
What I claim is:
A securing device including a shank having a longitudinal bore extending inwardly from one end thereof, a head at the opposite end of said shank, a locking bar pivotally secured in said shank having a pluralityof notches in the pivoted end thereof, a spring actuated locking member slidably mounted in said bore having a tapered end defining a concave edge engaged with the edge of the pivoted locking bar to prevent rotational movement of the spring actuated locking member and adapted to engage within the notches in said locking bar to secure the latter in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. F. URBAN.
Witnesses: LoUIs H. RIGHLER, EMIL SNART.
