Description

V. E. RUMBARGER.
TRAVELING ELECTRIC SIGN.
APPLICATION FILED NOV-16,1911.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
wuwntoz Water E. Rww yfl:
* VICTOR E. RUMBARGEB, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
' TRAVELING ELECTRIC SIGN.
sand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling Electric Signs, of which the following 1s a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to travelmg electric signs and the object of the inventlon is to produce a brilliantly illuminated sign which can be transported through the streets of the city, or elsewhere, without interfering with the traffic and which can be'combined with a delivery vehicle without monopolizing space which would be valuable for other purposes.
' It is also an object of the invention to produce a sign of this character which will be of pleasing appearance when not illuminated and to place the illumination under the control of the driver of the vehicle, thus providing the vehicle with an attractive sign during the day and a brilliantly illumlnated 'sigfilat night.
the accompanying drawings, Figure 1v is a side elevation of a delivery wagon showing my sign applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a iagrammatic view of the circuit.
'In'these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention and have shown 'the signfas comprising suitable letters or emblems formed or outlined by electric lamps. In the particular sign here illustrated the letters are formed by a series of apertures 1 in a metal plate 2, which forms the body orbackgrou nd of the sign. Back of each aperture in this plate is mounted an incandescent electric lamp, 10, which, when illuminated, will be visible through the aperture and when not'illuminated will be practically invisible, thereb leaving the surface of the plate smooth and unobstructed 'to receive such decoration or lettering as may be desirable.
The sign may be supported on any suitable vehicle. As here shown I .have mounted it on the frame or body 3 of a delivery wagon provided with the usual running -gear, comprising ground wheels 4 and havmg at the front the usual foot board 5.
This vehicle may be driven by any suitable power or drawn by horses. terial to the carrying out of the invention,

although the sign is particularly adapted to power driven vehicles.
The electric lamps of the sign are connected with a source of electric current wh1ch may be any of the several known types. In the present instance I have shown t e source of current as comprisin a storage battery 6 supported from the ame or body of the vehicle in a position where it w1ll not monopolize space which can be used for carrying goods, or for any other purpose, and have connected this battery by means of suitable conductors 7 and 8 with the sign, the current being distributed to the ndividual lamps by suitable wiring which it is not necessary to here illustrate as it is of an ordinary character. Preferably, the lamps are under the control of the driver of the vehlcle, and to this end I have interposed in one of the conductors, 7, a suitable switch 9 and have arranged the same adjacent to the drivers seat so that it can be readily manipulated by him. In the present instance the switch is mounted on the foot board so that the driver can operate the same with his foot without interfering with his other duties.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I have provided a traveling sign which can be combined with delivery I wagons, or other, vehicles and when moved through the streets will not only present a pleasing ap earance but will attract much attention; rther, that I have so constructed the sign and mounted the same that it will not in any way interfere with the ordinary use of the vehicle and will .not
desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications within the scope of the ap- This is immapended claim will occur to a person skilled 1n the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a traveling electric sign, a vehicle comprising a top, a bottom, and a drivers seat, a plurahty of electric lamps carried by the side of sald top arranged to form a charadter or design, a, source of electrical energy In testimon whereof, I afiix my signatu re carried by said vehicle below the bottom in presence 0 two witnesses. 7
thereof an electrical connection between said so urce of electrical energy and said VICTOR RUMBA'RGER' 5 lamps, and a controlling device for said con- Witnesses:
