To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN W. MEIDAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shearsor Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements inshears and scissors; and as its primary ob ect, 1t contemplates the provision of improved means to adjust the scissors or shear blades relatively in order to compensate for the wear incident to the operation of the said blades and in this manner to insure an efficient cut at all times.
Another object of my invention is to provide adjusting means of the above character that are designed to prevent excess lateral movement of the blades during operation so as to insure an efficient cut at all times, yet provide for the free and easy adjustment of the blades laterally with respect to each other and in this way compensate for wear on the pivot pin.

My invention consists generally of a pair of spaced apart blade structures 10 and 11 respectively which are preferably constructed of the usual material, the blade structure 10 carrying a handle portion 12 in alinement therewith, while the blade structure 11 is provided with a handle portion 13 which is offset relative to the longitudinal plane thereof. By reason of the position of the handle 13, a shoulder 14 is formed at the rear end of the blade structure 11, which serves a purpose which will presently appear. For the purpose of facilitating the manipulation of the handle portions and the respective blade structures, the said handle portions are provided with the thumb and finger grips 15 and 16 respectively.
In consistence with the foregoing, I have provided improved means for retaining the blade structures in pivotal relation, which, at the same time, may be operated to eflect the adjustment of the relative blade structures. With this in view, I have provided an exteriorly screw threaded pin 17 which carries a rectangular portion 18 at its upper end, the same being provided with a transverse opening 19. The pin 17 is positioned in a correspondingly threaded aperture-20 in the blade structure 10, so that the enlarged portion 18 projects materially beyond the upper face thereof in order that the latter may be received in a suitable cut-out in the other blade structure. The blade structure 11 is now provided with a vertically arranged cut-out 20 which communicates with the under face thereof as shown in Fig. 3. This cut-out is suitably enlarged, so that it will snugly receive the portion 18 carried by the pin 17, and allow the same to move vertically therein. Further, an aperture 21 is formed in the blade structure 11 and communicates with the cut-out 20 and is preferably in alinement with the screw threaded opening 22 which communicates with the outer face of the shoulder 14.
In assembling the parts, the pin 17 is secured firmly into the aperture 20, and rotated until the portion 18 attains a position similar to that shown in Fig. 2. The blade 11 is now moved adjacent the blade 10, and operated so that the enlargement 18 will pass freely into the cut-out 20. When the parts are in this position, I provide an improved operating element which is arranged in the opening 22 and designed to cooperate with the opening 19 in the enlargement 18 in order that the blade structure 11 may be positively adjusted relative to the blade structure 10. This operating element consists generally, of an exteriorly screw threaded shank portion 23 which is tapered at one end as at 24 to provide a suitable and annular cam surface, while its other end carries an operating member 25 as shown. The shank 23 being operated through the opening 22, will force the tapered portion 2 thereof into engagement with the annular wall of the opening 19 on the enlargement 18. Consequently the continuance of the manipulation of the shank 23 will cause the cam face of the tapered portion 24; to effectually engage the enlargement 28, to the end that the blade structure 11 will be positively brought into engagement with the lower blade structure 10 or vice versa. g
It will be understood from the foregoing that my invention consists of but a few simple parts which may be manufactured at a minimum cost; and it will also be appreciated that the respective blade structures may be easily and quickly adjusted in accordance with the varying conditions, with view of materially increasing the efficiency of the device.
In reducing my invention to practice, I have found that that form referred to herein as the preferred embodiment is the most efficient, yet realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrence with the adoption of my device I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes inthe details or construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to when required without depart- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a pair of scissors, one of the blades thereof having a threaded orifice and the other blade having a lateral opening; of a pin screw threaded a portion of its longitudinal extent having its screw threaded end received in said orifice, an enlarged head on one end of said pin for reception in said opening and to prevent rotation of said pin with respect to said second mentioned blade, said head provided with an opening, a second pin operable in said second mentioned blade having a tapered portion for reception in said last mentioned opening to adjust said blades relatively, and the pitch of the threads of said first mentioned pin being of slight degree to prevent excess lateral movement of said blades during operation, as and for the purpose specified.
