To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brainerd, in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Fuel-Sup ply-Recording Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fuel supply recording devices for boilers, and has for its object to provide in association with the door of a furnace for the boilers'certain mechanism which will automatically record each time the door is opened and closed,
will automatically-record each shovelful of coal thrown into the furnace, will record each time the boiler blows off through the safety valve, and provides a'recordable device for rendering it impossible for the fireman to throwcoal into the furnace without properly distributing the same.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a record tape with instrumentalities for advancing a-nd punching saidtape in accord ance with the operations .above specified in combination with a clock which makes a record mark upon the tape at the expiration V .-of each period for which the clock is set,
such period being preferably long enough so that it would be impossible for the furnace to be neglected by the fireman over as great a period. 'The instrumentalities above referred to consist of'record actuating mechanism which advances the tape each time the door is opened and punches the tape each time'the door is closed, which punches and advances the tape ;each time a shovelful of coalis thrown into the furnace and which marks the tape each time the engine pops off and will continue to make such m'ark until the safety valve exhaust ceases.
- In addition to the above devices a further and extremely" important part of my invention is a door .obstructer which is pneumatically caused to. be moved across, the door of the furnace after the same is opened so as to obstruct said door and prevent throwing another shovelful of coal into the furnace before the door is closed and again reopened. This obstructer, however, is not moved so rapidly but what the fireman can throw in a shovelful of coalafter the door is opened, andif such shovelful of coal isthrown properly so thatthe shovel strikes Specification of Letters Patent.

The applicability of the device, particularly to locomotives where the waste of coal from improper firing may be, and usually is, very great will be fully apparent, for with such a record the traveling engineer can checkup on the fireman, and those who fail to comply with the regulations and practices of good firing canbe called to task and if necessary dismissed. The use of the apparatus will, therefore, result in greatly improved Work on the part of firemen and' in large saving of coal consumption.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularlypointed out inv the claims.

It will be apparent from the above that when the fireman delivers a sho'velful of coal properly to the furnace, he strikes the shovelupon the plate 67 which will depress that plate, thereby rocking lever 71 to effect a. recording operation in record box 64 and simultaneously oscillating lever 75 to force upwardlypiston 70 in bore 80 and piston 83 in cylinder 84. v
An air cylinder 86 is secured upon the boiler head 20 at an angle such that when a door obstructer rod 87 isprojected therefrom, it may at the end of its movement strike plate 67 and automatically operate the same. The rod 87 is secured to a piston 88 in the cylinder 86 and is normally held in retracted position by a spring. 89 within said cylinder. Compressed air from the storage tank of the engine may be admitted into cylinder 86 above piston 88 through a pipe 90 which, as clearly shown in Fig. 10, is adapted to be placed in connection with the supply pipe 91 by fixed passageways 92,. 93, and 94 in casting 46 and a movable passageway 95 in piston 44 and another movable passageway 96 in movable piston 70, the

All of said openings arein alinement so that when the passageways 95 and 96 in pistons 55 and v70, respectively, are brought into alinement an unobstructed air passageway extending from supply pipe 91 to delivery pipe 90 and cylinder 86 is provided. The normal position of piston under the influence of springs 81 and 82, as
shown in Fig. 10, brings passageway 96 into 10 and 11, thetoe 41 engaging piece 42 pushes piston 44 upwardly so as to bring passageway 95 into alinement with passageways 93 and 94, thereby permitting flow of air to delivery pipe 90 which immediately actuates piston 88 and starts to move ohstructer member 87 across the opening of the the door. At the same time, a passageway 97 in piston 7 0 is brought into alinement with a passageway 99 through casting 46 in communication with delivery pipe 90 and another passageway 100 in said casing which opens to at.- mosphere. This releases the air from back of piston 88 which, together with the obstructer, is immediately restored to initial position.
Upon the boiler head 20 adjacent cylinder. 86 is a small cylinder 101 connected by pipe 102 with cylinder 86 below the normal position of piston 88, so that when compressed air is admitted to cylinder 86'above piston 88 through pipe 90, and the piston 88 is moved. in the cylinder, air will beadmitted through pipe 102 to cylinder 101. A piston 103 in cylinder 101 has the rod 104 thereof connected with a lever 105 pivoted adjacent its center to a stand106 secured to boiler head 20. The other end of lever 105 is pivotally connected with a plunger rod 107 which goes to the record box 104, thus making a record every time the piston 88 and obstructer 87 connected therewith have been actuated and restored to position.
The operation of the member 50 for locking' the door in open position is effected at the same time as actuation of the obstructer through compressed air delivered from pipe 91. As best shown in Fig. 10, this is accom-' plished by means of a pipe connection 108 which admits airlthrough a' check valve 109 and port 110 to cylinder 54 below'piston 53., This drives the piston 53 upwardly and .through the bent rod connections 52 rocks the latch 50 to the locking position shown in Fig. 9. A port 111 opens from cylinder 54 into cylinder 84 and is normally kept closed by the piston 83 in the lastnamed cylinder. The operation of, these devices will be apparent. When the door '23 is thrown open the toe 41 engages the bar 42 communication from compressed air pipe 91 to pipe 90 and cylinder 86 above piston 88 and also through pipe108 to cylinder 54: be-

The aggregate number of shovels of coal going into the furnace may readily be recorded bya numbering machine indicated diagrammatically at 166 and operated by a lever 167 connected withspi ndle 74 as shown in Fig. 1. 1

Itjs undesirable to fire a locomotive so as to produce moresteam than can be used, resulting in what is known as pop-ping of the safety valve, thus resulting in waste of fuel.
To keep a record of the number of instances of, such popplng and the duration of each relatively, I providea lever .186 journaled upon a] bracket 187 formed on cross partition 128. Upon an arm of said bracket is mounted a pointed spur wheel 188 which is .adapted't'o extend-through a slot 189 inthe ,tablef129' and engage the tape 126, being normally held out of engagement with said tape by a spring190'. If during the period the door of the furnace is opened or coal is thrown into the furnace the tape will be forwarded and the mark indicating the duration of the escape of steam through the safety valve will be correspondingly extended.
The operation of my device has been very fully given in connection with the detailed description thereof. It-is apparent that by its use a complete record will be made of the character of service rendered b the fire man in firing the engine (whether locomotive or stationary). This record will show the manner of delivering the coal from the shovel to the furnace, will necessarily show aeh shovelful delivered. the total number full of shovelfuls: will show the number of shovelfuls for any fifteen minute period or correspoiulingly foany period which is a multiple of fifteen minutes; will show whether or not one shovel has been introduced into the furnace at each time that the door has been opened and closed: will show how often the steam has been raised in the boiler so that the engine -pops off, and, in general. will show exactly the kind of work the fireman is doing and will enable the road engineer or superintemlent in charge of such operatives to correct deficient operation. to
select the men in accordance with the effectiveness of the work which they are doing, will reduce waste of fuel, and will opcrate as an incentive to the fireman since it makes it possible for the conscientious and efficient man to have the character of his work known.
I claim: I
1. In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder comprising atape, and means within the door opening when the door is opened adapted to be. actuated by the shovel when the fireman throws in a shovelfnl of coal for making a record upon the tape.
2. In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, means within the door opening ,when the door is opened adapted to be actuated by the shovel when the fireman throws in a shovelful of coal for making a record upon the tape, and. means for forwarding the tape after each actuation.
3. In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape. and means for effecting a record upon saidtape and for forwarding the tape each time thedoor is opened and closed.
4. In combination with the door of a furnace. a. fuel supply recorder comprising a tape. means for forwarding the tape rendered operative by opening of the door. and means for making a record on the tape when the door is closed.
In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, means for punching the tape including a sliding rod having a bevel faced projection thereon, said rod being mounted for v ide swinging movement when the same has been slid longitudinally a sullicient distance to effect the punching operation, a' plunger having a pivoted toe for engaging said projection to slide the rod until the same becomes displaced laterally to permit passage of the plunger and to return to position upon the return of the plunger, and means engaged by the door when the same is closed for operating the plunger.
('3. In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder. comprising a tape, means for punching the tape, means including a ratchet for forwarding the tape, a plunger, a swinging arm having operative connection with the plunger and provided withia pawl for operating the ratchet when the arm is moved by return movement of the plunger said plunger being adapted to operate the punching means when the same is moved outwardly, means engaged by the door when the same is closed for moving the plunger outwardly, and a spring for returning the plunger when the door is opened.
7. In combination with a boile' and the furnace door thereof, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, means actuated by opening and. closing of the door for making a record upon said tape each time the-door is opened and closed, and means adapted to be actuated by the shovel when the fireman throws in a shovelful of coal for making a record upon the tape.
8. In combination with a boiler and the furnace door thereof, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, means actuated by opening and closing of the door for making a record upon said tape each time the door is opened and closed, means adapted to be actuated by the shovel when the fireman throws in a shovelful of coal for making a record upon the tape, and means actuated by the escape of steam from the safety valve when the boiler blows off for record upon the tape.
9. In combination with a boiler and thefurnace door thereof, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, means actuated by opening and closing of the door for making a record upon said tape each time the door is opened and closed, means adapted to be actuated by the shovel when the fireman throws in a shovelfulv-of coal for making a record upon the tape, means actuated by the escape of steam from the safety valve when the boiler blows off for making a record upon the tape, a door obstruoter, means for moving the door obstructer across the door opening when the door is .opened, and

In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, a door obstrueter, means set in operation by opening ot the door for operating said door obstrueter, means adapted to be actuated by the shovel when the fireman throws in a shoveltul of coal tor releasing the door obstructer and permitting the same to return to normal position, and means simultaneously actuated to punch the tape.

In combination with the door of a furnace, a fuel supply recorder comprising a tape, a door obstructer, means actuated by opening the door for operating the door obstructer, means for terminating operation of the door obstrneter and to restore the same to initial position, means for punching the tape, a block slidably mounted in the fire-door ring in position to be engaged by the shovel when the fireman drops the same upon the bottom of said ring in scattering the coal to the furnace, and levers connected with the said block for simultaneously operating said terminating means and said punching means.

In combination with the door of a furnace. a swinging lock. a door obstructer, means including a cylinder for operating the swinging lock by compressed air, mums including a cylinder for operating the door obstructer by compressed air, a source of supply for compressed air and a normallyclosecl passageway therefor leading to both i of said cylinders, and'means actuated by sageway and admittingcompressed air to both cylinders and simultaneously operating the locking device and the door obstructer.
