After a suitable number of links has been as sembled, it. is possible to apply the grousers 7. A simple, practical, flexible endless traction member for supporting and driving a traction engine is thus formed which is strong, durable and economical to manufacture, being easily assembled or taken apart tor repair or other purposes. The provision of the annular shoulder H on the bearing pins is of considerable in'iportance as it not only forms a spacer between the outer ends of the side plates, but also serves as a means tor intermittently turning the several pins. This turning movement is transmitted when the chain passes over the driving sprocket (not here shown). The face of the collar, when sliding down the side of a tooth, causes the pin to turn. The intermittent turning of the pin constantly changes its position in the bearings 2 thereby preventmg any one side of a pin from becoming worn or flattened out at an particular point, The central collar, furthermore, eliminates the need of cotter pins or like devices for securing it against dropping out endwise.
The present form of only elevates the pivotal chain to a certain extent surface where they are kept comparatively clean, but the corrugations or projections 21 formed on the face 01 the particularly in soft or sandy grounth to give a. maximum tractive elllciency and at the same time protects the nuts at the securing bolts from injury and wear. The side plates from which the links of the chain are constructed are not only reversible and interhangeablc, but may also be used to form either the made or female links of the chain.

5. A track chain link comprising two separable side plates, a rail flange formed on the upper edge of each plate, a bearing member formed on each end of each plate, a pin having a roller centrally formed thereon extending through each set of bearing memhers, said roller forming a spacer between the caring members, means for securing the plates together, a shoe mounted cross wise of each set of plates forming a. link, a 120 seat formed on the lower edge of each plate to support the shoe, and a bolt eXte-ntling' through the seat on each plate and the shoe to secure the shoe.

In a track chain, a link comprising a pair of side plates provided with openings in their ends, a pin freely rotatable in the plate opening and adapted to couple adjacent links together, said plates being free for separable movement on the pin, a roller fix'ed oncthe pin between the side plates, and
means spaced from the pin forholding the thereon against separation.
