To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN REILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandwich, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to non-refillable bottles and has for its primary object to associate with the bottle cork, suitable impenetrable means so as to prevent the eX- traction of the cork from the bottle thereby requiring the necessity of breakingthe bottle neck before the contents of the bottle can be dispensed. I

Another object of this invention is the peculiar arrangement of stoppers, a pair of which are arranged in the bottle neck having interposed therebetween impenetrable means so as to prevent the stopper being withdrawn from the bottle neck as previously pointed out, thereby positively preventing the reusing of the bottle by unscrupulous parties or the like.

A further object of the invention is to so form the bottle neck as to facilitate the breaking ofi of the said neck, suitable means being likewise provided for breaking the neck so that a portion only of the stopper below the impenetrable means will be left in the portion of the neck which is unsevered from the body of the bottle which may be readily extracted in the usual manner.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my inven tion will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompaying drawing and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal sectional View of a bottle neck showing my improved stopper engaged therein; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section View of one of the stoppers used in the present invention; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of another stopper used in the present invention; Flg. 4 is a perspective view of the impenetrable means which is associated between the stoppers; Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the means for breaking the bottle neck; and Fig. 6 1s a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5.

In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, a

bottle neck 7 is provided which is preferably of an elongated cylindrical configuration being provided adjacent the upper end thereof with an annular recess 8.

Mounted in the neck 7 is my improved stopper generally designated 10 which in the present instance comprises an outer stopper 11 which is of a cylindrical configuration conforming to the contour of the innor periphery of the bottle neck 7 and being provided with an elongated cylindrical recess 12 which extends from the inner end of the stopper 11 to adjacent the outer end thereof as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 2. A stopper 13 is provided which is adapted to be snugly engaged in the cylindrical recess 12, each of said stoppers 11 and 13 being made of cork in the usual manner and extending in the bottle neck to a point below the annular recess 8 as shown to advantage in Fig. 1.

Mounted between the outer terminal of the recess 12 and the outer end of the stopper 13 is an impenetrable element 145, which in the present instance comprises a metallic disk, one face of which is in engagement with the upper end of the stopper 11 at the outer terminal of the recess 12 while the 0pposite or inner face thereof is in engagement with the outer end of the stopper 13, the peripheral edge of said disk 13 snugly engaging with the inner periphery of the stopper 11.

In order to facilitate the severing of a portion of the bottle neck above the recess 8 thereof, a suitable means 15 is provided comprising a semi-circular collar 16 one face of which is beveled inwardly so as to provide a knife edge 17, which engages in the annular recess 18, while one of the ends of said collar 16 is tapered to a point as indicated at 18 in order to facilitate the engaging of the same in the recess, while a threaded bore 19 is provided adjacent the opposite end thereof in which is mounted a set screw 20, the latter having the penetrable end thereof beveled to provide a point 21 so as to cause the knife edge 17 of the collar 16 to gradually bite into the neck of the bottle as pressure is exerted on the thumb screw or set screw 20.

In operation, the impenetrable disk 14L is inserted in the upper or outer end of the recess 12 of the stopper 8 and the stopper or cork 13then engaged in the recess 12, being of such a length as to lie flush with the extreme inner end of the stopper 11, and being snugly engaged'therein through the pressure exerted on the outerperiphery of the stopper 11 when the same is inserted in the bottle neck 7. When it is desiredto dispense the contents of the bottle, the semi-circular collar 16 is engaged with the recess 8 and pressure exerted thereon through the medium of the set screw 20 causing the knife edge 17 to sever the upper end of the bottle neck 7 and more specifically the. portion above the recess 8 from the remainder of the neck allowing the stopper to be readily broken, thereby leaving only a small portion of the stopper in the neck 7 which may be readily extracted in the usual manner by a cork extractor or the like.

It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts, may

be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.

' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A closure for bottles including a stopper provided with a longitudinally extending recess opening on its lower face and leaving a thin wall at the top, an impenetrable disk positioned in the recess and contacting with the closed end thereof, said disk having substantially the same diameter as the recess, and a filler for said stopper abutting the disk and terminating flush with the open end of the stopper, the diameters of the filler and recess being substantially equal.
