Mounted upon the forward end of the engine is a horizontally disposed bracket 43 upon which bracket is pivotally mounted the plate 44, the spring 45 passing around the pivot 46 and having its extremities bearing against the edges of the bracket and the plate 44, thus normally holding the plate in contact with the stop screw 47 as best illus-- trated in Figs. 3 and 6. A roller 48 is mounted at thel forward extremity of the plate 44 and arranged to engage the segment 14 as shown in Fig. 3. `This mechanism is for the purpose of 'preventing the teeth upon the clutch member 17 from riding over the teeth upon the clutch member 7 upon the return of the segment to the normal position.
The operation of the device is as follows: The parts being normally held in the position shown in the several figures of the drawings, the arm 13 of the segment 14 is held in engagement with the inclined face of the arm 2f), thus holding the clutch member 1.7 out of engagement with the clutch member 7. As the segment 14 completes its movement the spoke 13 will engage the inclined face -of the arm 28, thus throwing the clutch 'members again out of engagement as the eugine is started. The. spring 45 will then throw the plate 44 into the normal position, the roller 48 engaging the segment 14 and holding the clutch members 17 and 7 apart as shown in Fig. 3 and as the operating lever is released the coil sp'rin'fr 26 will pull the segment .and its accompanying parts into the normal-position.' .As the clutch 'members are held apart yby means'of the plate 44 and roller 48 the teeth of the clutch member 17 will not click or ride over the teeth of the clutch member 17 upon the return movement. It will thus be seen that at all times while the device is not in operascrew which is provided for the purpose of taking up slack in the chain 32, said adjusting screw being located through the lug 5l in the segment 36 and bearing against the shoulder 39 of the' operating lever.'
Although the drawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention7 many changer in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience soggests, without departing from the spirit of: the invention, within the scope of the appended claims. I claim: 1. In an explosive engine starter, comprising in combination with an explosive engine shaft, areceiving clutch member fixedl y mounted upon the shaft of said engine, a second sha-ft arranged in alinemcnt with the engine shaft, a movable clutch member slidably mounted upon said second named shaft, i

In an explosive4 engine starter, comprising in combination with an explosive engine shaft, a receiving clutch member lixedly mounted upon the shaft of the engine, a seeond shaft, arranged inl alinement with said engine shaft, a movable clutch member slidably mounted upon said second named shaft, a radial spoke provided upon said clutch member, a segment carried by said clutch member, arms supported upon the engine base and` located adjacent each side of said movable clutch member, inclined faces privvided upon vsaid arms, said spoke adapted to engage said inclined faces, means for normadly holding said spoke in engagement with one of said inclined faces, a plate pivot-y allymounted upon said engine, means for limiting the inc vement of said plate 'in one direction, a roller mounted upon the outer extremityof said plate, means for normally holding said' plate in ,engagement with said. limiting means, said roller arranged to contact with said segment, a flexible member Contact, 'with n said segment.
