To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, JOHN Non'rrr ZAHNISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVaynesburg, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in l/Vire Rope and Cable Cutting Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will cnable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a wire rope or cable cutting tool, and particularly to a cutting tool for severing ropes or cables which have become lodged or fastened in oil, gas or Artesian wells, so that the same may be removed from the well so as to permit a fishing tool to be lowered into the well for removing the fastened parts therefrom.
The invention consists of certain novel features and details of construction as will be more fully' described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation of my invention with the faceplate in position, showing the interior construction and the movable parts in dotted lines. Fig. 2, is a similar view, the faceplate being removed and the interior construction and movable parts being shown in full lines and in their normal or set position, and in dotted lines in the operative position. Fig. 3, is a bottom end view of the device, the face-plate and the parts being removed therefrom. Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the trip employed. Fig. 5, is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 6, is a side elevation of the retaining-pin, Fig. 7 is an inverted plan view of the same and, Fig. 8, is a perspective view of the knife showing the lug formed on the side thereof.

A, represents the main or body portion of the tool, which is practically semi-circular in transverse section, and is provided with grooves and recesses for receiving the rope or cable as also the movable parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter. The larger recess B, is square as shown and runs the full length of the body portion A. This recess is provided for receiving a rope or cable 0. In the upper part of the body portion is a recess F, which contains a spring G, the purpose of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
A groove II, is formed in the body portion for receiving a trip I. This groove is at an angle to the rope groove, as is also the groove D.
A pin J, is secured within a recess K, and is adapted to project out and under the lower end of the knife E, for holding said knife up into the set position. This pin is providedwith a recess L, in one side thereof for receiving the upper end of the trip I, which bears against one side of same when in the set position. The trip I, is held in place by a pin M, which rests in a slot N, in the side of said trip and prevents it from dropping out and down into the well. The lower end of the trip is practically semi-circular and is adapted to partly encircle the rope or cable while being lowered into the well.
As will be seen by the drawings, I have shown the face-plate with enlarged holes 0, which terminate into slots P, and have shown the studs or bolts Q, rigidly secured into the body portion A. By so doing, I am enabled to secure the face plate to or remove it from the body portion by simply removing the center bolt R. I mayhowever, remove all the bolts and do away with the slotted holes, without materially increasing the work of changing the plate.
The knife E, rests on and against an inclined surface S, which is formed within the body portion.
I will now describe the operation of my invention, which is as follows: Assuming the face-plate removed as shown in Fig. 2, and all the movable parts being in their normal or set position, as also shown in this figure, to wit: the knife E, being up to the top of the incline, the spring compressed, the pin projecting out under the lower end of the knife and the trip down as shown in full lines Fig. 2, the device is placed around a rope or cable and the face-plate secured in place as shown in Fig. 1, by means of the bolts or studs Q, and lowered down into the well. When the trip I, comes in contact with the rope or cable socket said trip I, moves upward and the upper end thereof, which is beveled, crowds the pin J, over and out f om under t e end of the knife E,
which releases the knife and the tension of the spring forces the knife down, causing the trip to come into contact with the rope or cable. By the upward movement of the device, as it is being removed from the well, the knife will be drawn farther down to ward the bottom of the body portion and the incline crowds said knife over against and through the rope or cable thus severing said rope or cable, when the device can be removed from the well allowing the fishing tools to be lowered for removing the re mainder of the tools therefrom.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: j
1. A wire rope and cable cutting tool, comprising a body portion provided with a groove for receiving a rope or cable, and an inclined surface the upper end of which terminates into a recess, a spring contained in said recess and a knife adapted to bear against and slide upon said inclined surface, the upper end of said knife bearing against the lower end of the spring, all substantially as and for the purposes shown and de scribed.
2. A wire rope and cable cutting tool, comprising a body portion provided with a groove for receiving a rope or cable, an inclined surface formed in said body portion, an intermediate groove lying adjacent to said inclined surface, a knife bearing against and sliding upon said inclined surface, a groove lying at an angle to the rope groove and parallel to said inclined surface, a trip having its upper end beveled and adapted to slide up and down in said groove, a transverse pin adapted to be engaged by the upper end of said trip, the said pin supporting the knife when in its normal position, together with a pin for preventing the trip from becoming disengaged from the body portion when the tool is in use, all substantially as shown and described.
3. A wire rope and cable cutting tool, comprising a body portion provided with suitable recesses for receiving a rope or cable, a trip and a knife contained within said body portion, said knife bearing against and sliding upon an inclined surface formed in said body portion, a recess in the upper part of the body portion containing a spring which in turn bears against the upper end of the knife, a transverse pin supporting said knife when in its normal or set position and a trip beveled at its upper end and adapted to engage a recess formed in the side of the transverse pin for moving the pin laterally, together with a pin for holding the trip from becoming disengaged from the body portion, all substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
