SWITCH.
Application filed August 23, 1915.
4for its object the production of a simple and efficient switch which is especially adapted to.
be used in connection with automobile indi# `cators wherein several circuits employed for operating the indicator may be readily and conveniently closed at the desired time.
Another object of this invention is the productionof a simple and efficient switch which 'consists of,a minimum number of parts and which will be held in a set position without .central longitudinal section through the switch, the switch arm being shown in a neutral position. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the intermediate plate of the switch. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the top plate of the switch. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the intermediate plate of the switch, showing the top plate of the switch below the intermediate plate. Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 7-7 of Fi tions 4 for the purpose of receiving the metallic cap 5 which fits over the reduced ends 6 of the plates 1, 2, and 3. The metallic cap 5 is provided with a plurality of forwardly extending spaced lips 7 which straddle the upper and lower plates 1 and. 3, as clearly indicated lin Fig. 1,
2. Fig. 8 isa top plan view of the' bottom plate ofthe switch employed in convSpecification of Letters Patent. y Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Serial No. 46,979.
switch lever 8 is pivotally mounted upon the upper lip 7 of the cap 5 by means of a pivot screw 9 and this pivot screw 9 passes through the plates 1, 2, and 3 and carries the nut 10 upon the lower end thereof for firmly holding the cap 5 upon the switch body orv plates l, 2, and 3. A washer 11 is placed under the switch lever 8 and rests upon an insulating disk 12 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The switch lever 8 is provided with an insulated knob 13 upon the outer end thereof for facilitating the operation of the lever and the outer end of this lever is bent or inclined downwardly as indicated in Fig. 3 so as to press firmly upon the top plate 1 as the lever is swung. tact knob 14 is carried by the lever 8 and is provided with a notched portion 15 formed upon the bottom thereof, the knob 14.- being secured tov the knob 13 by means of an integral threaded pin 16.
lThe pocket 17 is formed in the intermediate plate 2 and communicates with a pocket 18 formed in the top plate 1. A coiled spring 19 is placed in the pockets 17 and 18 and supports a ball `2O, which ball is adapted to engage the notch 15 formed in the knob 14 and hold the lever 8 in a neutral position, such as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The top plate 1 is provided upon the under face thereof and near the rear with a pocket 21 which is adapted to receive the contact plate 22 carried by the wire 23. The screw 9 is adapted to pass through the ccntact plate 22 and form an electrical connection therefor. The cap 5 is provided with an aperture 2i at the rear thereof for the purpose of permitting the entrance of the several electrical wires connected to the switch. A second contact screw 25 passes upwardly through the bottom plate 3 and projects beyond the top plate 1 as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, and is adapted to engage-the bottom face of the lever 8 for closing an electrical circuit when the lever 8 is in a neutral position. A. wire 26 passes through the groove 27 formed in the bottom of the central plate 2 and carries a contact plate28, which contact plate engages the contact screw 25, thereby forming an electrical circuit to be closed by means of the lever 8 through the wires 26 and` 23. The top plate 1 is provided upon the under face thereof with a pair of diverging channels 29, within which channels 29 is placed a pair of wires 3Q A. conhaving spaced terminal screws 31 secured to the top plate l and projecting through to the upper face ot the plate l for producing contact points 32 to be engaged by the knob 1l of the lever 8 and permit the closing ot' the circuit across the Contact points 3;. These g-ontact points 32 are so arranged as to have a pair of these contact points 32 upon the opposite sides of the neutral point 20. rl`he stop screw 33 is placed in the rear of cach pair ot' contact points to limit the swinging movement of the circuit closing lever 8.
It should be understood that the intermediate plate Q is provided upon its upper face with a plurality of divergingichannels 3l which are adapted to register with the channels 29 in the top plate l. The plate 2 is also provided with a plurality ot pockets 35 formed at the outer end of each ot' the channels 3l. T he bottom plate 3 is provided with a channel portion 3G upon the upper face thereof for the purpose of receiving the wire 26 passing to the screw 25.
What we claim is l. A switch of the class described comprising a body formed of a plurality of layers of insulating strips, contact points connected to said strips adjacent each side thereof, means for supplying an electrical current to said contact points, said lever rality of spaced lips. a pivot pin passing through said lips and layers ot insulating material for holding` said layers lirmly together, a contact lever pivotally secured to said pivot pin, a central contact point'rmeans for yieldably holding said contact lever in engagement with said central Contact point, and a plurality of auxiliary contact points carried by said body.
In testimony whereoiI we hereunto aiix our signatures.
HARRY lWALKER. VILLIAM L. KREUSCHER.
