To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEAN E. LOCI-IMAN, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razor-Stropping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stropping devices for razor blades and more particularly for safety razor blades.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to yieldingly maintain the strop tightly Wound about a drum when not in use, said device consisting of means adapted to hold a razor blade against portions of said strop When said strop is being unwound from said drum or wound thereon with the cutting edge of said blade which is being stropped always pointing in the direction in which said strop is moving.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts whereby the above object and certain other objects hereinafter appearing may be attained as set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stropping device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings 5 is a frame preferably formed of sheet metal and bent to form a ,base 6 and side members 7 and 8, said side members being arranged parallel with each other and constituting supports for the working parts of the device.
A rotary member or drum 9 is journaled between the side members 7 and 8 upon a shaft 10. The drum 9 consists preferably of a hollow cylindrical portion 11 and flanges 12, 12 at opposite ends respectively of said drum, said cylindrical portion 11 being adapted to contain a'spiral spring 13 one end of which is secured to the shaft 10 while the opposite end is attached to said cylindrical portion.
A. razor strop 14 is attached at one end to the cylindrical portion of the drum and is adapted to be wound thereabout between the flanges 12. The spring 13 is connected to said drum and the shaft 10 in such a manner that when the strop 14 is pulled out by hand the spring 13 will be wound up and upon the releasing of said strop said spring, owing to the tenslon applied thereto, will automatically rotate the drum and wind said strop thereon. For convenience in operation, the outer end of the strop is provided with a suitable handle or grip 15.
A ratchet 16 is attached to the shaft 10 and the teeth thereof are arranged to be engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 17 pivotally attached to one of the side members in the frame 5 for the purpose of permitting the tension of the spring 13 to be varied by the rotation of said shaft 10, either to wind or unwind said spring, said pawl being adapted to hold the shaft in the position determined by engaging the teeth of said ratchet.
A rocker frame 18 consisting preferably of side members 19 and 20 interposed between the fianges 12 of the drum and the side members 7 and 8 respectively of said frame, is pivoted to rock upon the shaft 10 with its aXis coinciding with the axis of said frame. The rocker frame 18 is, in other words, a carrier frame for a blade holder 21 which, in turn, is secured to a shaft 22 rotatably mounted in the side members 19 and 20 of said rocker frame.
The blade holder 21 is preferably formed of sheet metal bent around said shaft 22 with the opposite ends thereof forming jaws 23 into which the blade of the ordinary razor or what is known as a safety razor as shown at 24 may be inserted and yieldingly held thereby during the stropping operation. Upon opposite sides of the shaft 22 preferably at equal distances therefrom, are arranged guides 25 and 26 which also constitute means for securing the side members 19 and 20 of the rocker frame together. The guide members 25 and 26 constitute guides for the strop which is led from the drum 9 over the guide member 25, thence beneath the shaft 22 and over the guide member 26.
Another guide member 27 is arranged directly beneath the shaft 22 and supports the strop immediately adjacent to said holder. The guide members 25 and 26 are arranged far enough from the shaft 22 to permit the blade 24; to be swung from one side or the other with respect to the shaft 22 into engagement with the upper face of said strop while the guide member 27 positions the portion of the strop engaged by said blade at the desired angle to said blade so as to produce the required bevel to the cutting edge thereof.
A second pair of guide members 28 and 29 is arranged upon'the opposite side of the strop 14 from the pair of guide members and 26; said second pair of guide members prevents the strop from becoming disengaged from the guide members 25 and 26 during the winding and unwinding thereof. The rocking movements of the rocker frame 18 are limited, preferably by pins 30 and 31 arranged upon opposite sides thereof and constructed and arranged to engage one of the side members of the frame 5 preferably at 32 and 33 respectively.
An oscillatory movement is imparted to the shaft 22 during the rocking movements of the rocker frame 18, oreferably by means of a pinion 34 fast to one end of said shaft and a series of teeth 35 constituting a gear segment and formed preferably upon the side member 7 of the frame. The side member 8 of said frame is cut away together with the side member 20 of the rocker frame, to clear the handle of the ordinary type of razor provided it is desired to strop this type of razor on the device.
The base 6 of the frame 5 is provided with suitable holes to permit the same to be attached permanently to a suitable support or be detachably secured to such a support.
7 The operation of the device hereinbefore specifically described in as follows: The razor blade 24 is inserted in the jaws 23 when the holder is in the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, which position is maintained by slightly moving the rocker frame upon its axis. After said blade has been suitably placed, the operator grasps the handle 15 of the strop and applies pressure thereto to unwind said strop from the drum 9. During the unwinding of said strop, the pressure applied by said strop to the guide members 25 and 26 causes said rocker frame to be rocked about its axis until the pin 30 nearly engages the frame at 32. This partial rocking movement of said frame is suflicient to cause the shaft 22 to be rotated by the pinion 34 which rolls around the gear segment in engagement with the teeth 35.
The peculiar arrangement of the pinion 34 and the segmental gear insures the automatic positioning of the blade 24 against the strop with the cutting edge thereof pointing in the direction in which the strop is being moved while the stop pins 30 and 31 are set far enough from their points of contact 32 and 33 to permit the desired amount of pressure to be brought by the blade 24 upon the strop during the movements of said strop in opposite directions. As the strop is un- .wound, from said drum, the spring 13 is wound up, therefore, when the pressure is removed from said strop said spring will cause the same to be automatically wound upon said drum and as said strop moves in the reverse direction to be wound thereon, the pinion 34 and gear teeth 35 cooperate to move the blade 24 so that the opposite side thereof will engage said strop as indicated in Fig. 3, thus it will be evident that both edges of the razor blade may be stropped by the winding and unwinding movements of said strop.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. A stropping device having, in combination, a drum, a strop attached at one end to said drum and adapted to be Wound upon and unwound therefrom, means constructed and arranged to rotate said drum and wind said strop thereon, a blade holder, a carrier frame for said holder pivoted to rock about the axis of said drum, said carrier frame being constructed and arranged to be rocked in opposite directions by the unwinding of said strop from said drum and the winding thereof upon said drum respectively, and means operated by said rocker frame adapted to oscillate said blade holder.
2. A stropping device having, in combination, a rotary member, a strop attached to said rotary member and adapted to be wound upon and unwound therefrom, means constructed and arranged to automatically rotate said rotary member to wind said strop thereon, a blade holder, a carrier frame for said blade holder constructed and arranged to swing about an axis coincident with the axis of said rotary member, means on said carrier frame adapted to be engaged by said strop and to cause said carrier frame to be moved in opposite directions by said strop during the-winding and unwinding movements thereof, and means rendered operative by the movements of said carrier frame in opposite directions adapted to oscillate said blade holder.
3. A stropping device having, in combination, a rotary drum, a strop attached to said drum, adapted to be wound upon and unwound therefrom, a spring arranged within said drum to rotate the same in one direction and wind said strop thereon, an oscillatory blade holder, a carrier frame for said blade holder adapted to rock about an axis coincident with the axis of said drum, guide members for said strop arranged upon said carrier frame at opposite sides of the axis of blade holder, and means adapted to be operated by the movements of said carrier frame in opposite directions to move first one side of the blade carried by said blade holder and then to the opposite side thereof against said strop.
4. A stropping device having, in combination, a rotary member, a strop attached to said rotary member and adapted to be wound "upon and unwound therefrom, a spring constructed and arranged to automatically wind said strop upon said rotary member, a rocker frame arranged to rock about an aXis substantially coincident with the aXis of said rotary member, a blade holder pivotallymounted upon said rocker frame, a pair of guide members mounted upon said rocker frame upon opposite sides of said blade holder, a pinion secured to said blade holder and a stationary gear segment adapted to rock said blade holder during the rocking movements of said rocker frame in opposite directions.
5. A stropping device having, in combination, a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, a strop attached to said drum and adapted to be wound upon and unwound therefrom, means constructed and arranged to rotate said drum to wind said strop thereon, a rocker frame pivoted to rock about an axis substantially coincident with the axis of said drum, stops adapted to limit the rocking movement of said rocker frame, a blade holder pivotally mounted upon said rocker frame, a pair of guide members on said rocker frame arranged at opposite sides of said blade holder, said guide members constructed and arranged to engage said strop, a pinion secured to said blade holder and a series of teeth arranged on said frame in an arc substan tially concentric with the axis of said drum adapted to rotate said pinion whereby the opposite faces of the blade carried by said blade holder may be alternately moved to engage said strop.
