To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RAYMON G. Lnsnrn and EDWARD J. K. SCHMIDT, citizens of the United States, residing at Paulding, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to an improved dump wagon of the type which is used for road grading and the principal object of the invention is to provide a wagon so constructed that gravel or other material may be deposited upon the road either the full width of the road Or in the side ruts pro duced by Wagon wheels or if desired only in the central portion of the road between the wheel tracks.
Another object of the invention is to provide the dump Wagon with an improved type of closure for the outlet permitting material to drop onto the central or side portions of the road and to provide improved actuating means for these closures so that they may be independently operated and thus one or if desired all of the closures opened.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this dump wagon that a leveler may be connected with the same for packing down the material placed upon the road and smoothingthe road-bed.

Fig. 2 is a view showing the dump wagon in top plan. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the improved dump wagon. Fig. 4 is a view in front elevation of the improved dump wagon. Fig. 5 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view through the improved dump wagon. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the closure controlling shafts forming part of the actuating mechanism.
The wagon has its body or receptacle 10 provided with a converging bottom 11 leading to an outlet opening 12 which communicates with passageways 13 leading into the auxiliary chutes 14: and 15 extending from the side walls of the body 10. These chutes 14 and 15 have open lower ends terminating at the outlet opening 12 of the body so that the closures 16, 17 and 18 of the outlet 12 and chutes 14 and 15 respectively will extend in alinement. This wagon body 10 is supported by the Wheels 19 and 20 which are mounted upon the axles 21 and 22, the supporting structure 23 for the rear portion of the wagon body 10 extending from the rear axle and the supporting structure 24 for the front of the body extending from the front axle and engaging the front portion of bottom 11 and also engaging the foot board 25. A preferred form of supporting structure has been shown in the drawings but it is of course, obvious that any suitable form can be used according to the size and weight of the wagon. This machine can be drawn by horses or other draft animals connected with the front axle by any suitable draft appliance, such for instance as indicated at 26, or if desired the machine may be of the power driven type and provided with a suitable propelling engine and steering gear. No particular form of propelling or steering means need be used-as this does not form a material part of this invention and therefore no particular" form has been shown. The drivers seat 27 is mounted at the front of the body 10 and in the preferred form is hingedly connected with the body as shown at 28.
Shafts 29 are rotatably mounted beneath the body 10 through the medium of hanger meshing so that the shafts will rotate together. These shafts further carry sleeves 35 upon which the sleeves 31 of the closures 17 and 18 are mounted, the sleeves 35 carrying gear wheels 36 and 37 having their teeth I the depression formed in the middle mesh so that the proper movement can be imparted to the closures 17 and 18. A shaft 38 which might be termed the driving shaft is rotatably mounted beneath the body 10 through the medium of brackets 39 and carries sleeves 40 which sleeves terminate short of the ends of shaft 38 as clearly shown in Fig. 6. Gear wheels 11 and 42 are mounted upon the shaft 38 and sleeves 4L0 and mesh with the gears 34 and 37 so that movement can be transmitted to the closures through the medium of the intermeshing gears.
The actuating mechanism includes posts 48, 14 and 4:55 which are journaled in the foot board 25 and carry hand wheels 16 at their upper ends and drums 48 at their lower ends. These drums 4:8 are positioned in alinement with drums 19 rigidly mounted upon the shaft 38 and sleeves 4L0 and chains 50 are passed around the drums 18 and 19 so that when the posts or shafts 13, at and 15 are turned, the shaft 38 and sleeves 40 may be rotated. It is of course, obvious that if desired, cables could be substituted for the chains 50, chains 50 being simply shown to indicate a strong, flexible means for rotating the shaft 38 and sleeves 40 from the posts 48, 14 and It will thus be seen that by turning the posts. through the medium of the hand wheels 16, the shaft 38 and sleeves 10 can be independently rotated and thus the closures 16, 17 and 18 independently moved to an opened or closed position and the gravel or other material in the body 10 of this dump wagon or road grader allowed to feed out of. the opening 12 or through a selectedchute 1 1 or 15 in the desired amount or if desired may be permitted to feed through the opening 12 and both chutes 14 and 15 simultaneously either in an even stream or with the amount varied.
In other words, if desired a small quantity of the material could be fed onto the central the chutes 14 and 15 to fill up the ruts or if there was a depression in the center of the road smalhquantities could be fed through the chutes to fill up ruts and a larger quantity fed through the outlet opening 12 into of the road.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided a road grader or dump wagon which is so constructed that material can be fed out of the same and deposited upon a road in the desired place either at the sides or in the center and further that this grading machine is so constructed that the flow of material out of the same can be easily controlled and when necessary quickly shut off. It should be further noted that a leveler 51 may be placed behind the outlet opening 12 and chutes 14 and 15 and in front of the rear supporting wheels 19 so that the gravel or other material deposited upon the road may be compacted, thus forming a smooth road-bed. It is of course, obvious that if desired, three levelers could be provided, one for the center of the road and one to the rear of each of the outlet chutes 14 and 15 and further if desired these levelers could be adjustably supported so that they could be drawn out of engagement with the road.
What is claimed is 1. A road grader comprising a vehicle including a receptacle provided with an outlet and with side chutes communicating with the interior of said receptacle and provided with outlets, shafts rotatably mounted beneath said receptacle, sleeves rotatably mounted upon said shafts, closures rigidly mounted upon said shafts and upon said sleeves for closing the outlets of said receptacle and chutes, gears mounted upon said shafts and sleeves and meshing, a shaft rotatably mounted beneath said receptacle, gears carried by said shaft and meshing with the gears of one of said first mentioned shafts, sleeves mounted upon said last mentioned shaft and provided with gears meshing with the gears of the sleeves mounted upon one of said first mentioned shafts, and means for independently rotating said shafts and the sleeves mounted thereon for independently opening and closing the outlets of said receptacle and chutes.

3. A road grader including a vehicle having a body provided with an outlet and with side spouts having outlet openings, closures for the outlet openings of said body and spouts, carrying means for the closures of said spouts, rotatably mounted carrying means for the closures of said body serving as means for rotatably mounting the carrying means for the closures of said spouts, and means for independently moving the carrying means of said closures for independently opening and closing the closures of said body and spouts.
4. A road grading machine comprising a vehicle including a body having a bottom provided With an intermediate outlet opening for feeding material onto a road between Wheel ruts formed therein, and with side outlets for feeding material from said body into Wheel ruts formed in a road, closures for the intermediate and side outlet opening of said body, carrying means for the side closures, rotatably mounted carrying means for the intermediate closures of said body serving as means for rotatably mounting the carrying means for the side closures, and means for independently moving the carrying means of said closure for independently opening and closing the closures.

A grading machine comprising a vehicle including a body having a plurality of outlets, shafts rotatably mounted beneath said body upon opposite sides of the outlets and having meshing gears, sleeves mounted upon said shafts, closures carried by said shafts and sleeves for closing the outlets of said body, a driving shaft rotatably mounted beneath said body, sleeves rotatably mounted upon said driving shaft, gears carried by said shaft and last mentioned sleeves and meshing With the gears of said first mentioned shafts and sleeves, drums carried by said driving shaft and the sleeves mounted thereon, actuating posts rotatably mount ed, drums carried by said actuating posts, and flexible means passed around the drums of said actuating posts and driving shaft and the sleeves carried thereby.
6. A road grader comprising a vehicle including a body having a plurality of outlets, closures for the outlets of said body, rotatably mounted supporting means for certain of said closures, supporting means for the remaining closures rotatably mounted upon said first mentioned supporting means, gears carried by the rotatably mounted supporting means of said closures, gears meshing With said last mentioned gears, means for independently rotatably mounting said last mentioned gears, and means for independently rotating said last mentioned gears to move said closures and independently open and close the outlets of said body.
7. A road grader comprising a vehicle including a body provided With a plurality of outlets, shafts rotatably mounted beneath said body portion, sleeves rotatably mounted upon the end portions of said shafts, closures carried by said shafts and sleeves, means for simultaneously rotating said shafts to move the closures carried thereby, means for simultaneously moving the sleeves at one end of said shaft to adjust the closures carried thereby, and means for simultaneously moving the sleeves at the opposite end of said shaft to simultaneously adjust the closures carried thereby.
