TOOTH FOB POWER-SHOVELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 31916.
Application filed August 6, 1914.. Serial No. 855,352.
a steam shovel, of relatively refractor material, such as manganese steel, and 0 such form and configurationv as to be easily attached to the shovel blade and adapted to be reversed so that when one side becomes unduly worn the tooth may be turned over,
that is, the top side turnedto face downwardly, thereby prolonging the usefulness of the device.
Another object of my invention is to make the tooth in a one piece structure which may be readily cast and directly secured to theshovel blade without the necessity of emplaying a stock upon which to mount it.
Other and further objects of my inventionwill become apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following .descriptipn when taken in conjunction with the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tooth before attachment to a shovel.
Fig. 2 shows a tooth as it appears when attached to a shovel; showing a portion of the shovel and attaching shim in position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tooth.
In all of the views the same reference characters indicate similar parts.
The tooth is cast in a single piece having an axially central slot 5 extending from the rear end to a vertical plane in which the tapering surface 6 and 7 terminate. This slot may be made somewhat wider than the shovel plate 8 for admission of a relatively soft workable shim 9' for insertion between said plate and one of the limbs of the tooth. Tn casting the tooth the width of the slot 5 may be varied. By using the shim it need not fitthe shovel blade neatly. Owing to the refractory nature of the material constituting the tooth, it is an expensive process to tool it to fit the shovel plate; therefore I salient end, at the apex 10, which is prefer-- ably in a plane central of the longitudinal axis of the tooth. The tooth tapers rear- Wardly from the points 11-11 to points 12-12 and then extends in parallel lines 13-l3' to afford fiat surfaces for seating the nuts 1414e that engage the threaded bolt 15., Another such step is preferably provided in the limbs 16 and 17, as at 18-18 for the nuts 1919' of the bolt 20. The holes 21' and 22' are cored through the limbs 16 and 17 and corresponding registering holes may be drilled through the softer and more tractable material of which the shovel plate 8 and the shim 9 are composed, using the holes 21' and 22 as guides or the tooth as a templet.
The disposition of metal shown in the construction of the tooth provides the best shape for Wear and strength and reduces the tooth to the simplest form available for direct application to the shovel.
Such a shim Having described my invention what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In combination with a power shovel having a plate-bottom of uniform thickness, of a reversible tooth, said tooth comprising a pointed portion symmetrically tapering with respect to a median longitudinal plane; leg portions separated by a parallel sided slot, Wider than the thickness of the plate, and a removable shim in said slot, outside of said shovel, to vertically displace the tooth so that the point of the tooth will lie below the median plane of the plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE T. CHAMBERS.
In the-presence of STANLEY W. COOK, LORETTA A. GIBBONS.
