sHownn ATTACHMENT son BATH-rues.
Application filed February 7, 1916. Serial-.130. 76,807.
To all whom it mdy concern:
. Be it known that I, Ps'rnn SnLTNnR, a citizen of the United Statesof America, and
' resident of McMechen, county of Marshall, and State of West Virginia, have invented.
certain new and useful Improvements in Shower Attachments for Bath Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to shower attachments for bath tubs, and it has for its primary object to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive shower device which may be readily applied to and removed from the cock of a bathtub as occasion may re quire.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which is supported by the bath-cock in an upright position and which has the showerring thereoffoldable to an out-of-thewajr position when not in use. their object is to provide a device of the character mentioned the shower-ring of which is adjustable to any desired elevation to suit the height of the user.
'VVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and co1nbinn- S0 accompanying drawings, in wh1oh'- time of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the Specification of Letters Patent.
And astill fun Figure 1 is a side elevation of the in\ 'en-- tionapplied ton-hath cock of an ordinary type; Fi f2 is a frontjelevntion of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of the cylinder illustrating the telescopic feature of the device, including the waterpressure operated piston; Fig. 4 is an enlarged top plan view of the dislclike hingevelve Fig. 5 is an enlarged face view of the hand-operated controlling valve; Fig. 6 is an'enhlrged section ofthc hot and cold water inlets of the bath cock, showing the supporting member seated thereon; Fig. i is an enlarged detail section of the controlling valve; Fig. 8 is a side elevutionof the hinge valve; and Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail scc-- tion of the mouth of the bath cock and oi" the coupling means employed.
.Referring to said drawings, in which like throng. out the several -views-l indicates generally a bath cock of an ordinary typo mounted within a bath tub 2, said cock having the usual tubular inlets 3 for hot and pm d lil'lli 21: having an outlet Patented Aug. 1 1916.
lot or mouth 4. The parts composing the present invention are coupled to and supported by the bath c0ck'1.
Referring specifically to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drnwings, 5 indicates a short upright tube disposed between the two inlets 3 of the bath cools and connected at its lower endto one end of a U-shaped coupling memher or union-6, the opposite end of which is disposed incvertical alinemcnt with the mouth 4 ofsaid cock. A nipple 7 has its upper and lower. ends respectively seated within. said mouth at and the alined end of' the union 6, glands 8 end 9 being provided for forming tight joints, as shown. Connected to the upper end of the tube 5 by ,lueans of a union 10 is anup righl tube 11,
and disposed on soidtube o an underlying abutting relation to the union 1() is the central portion of a bow-shaped support or saddle 12 the under faces of the end portions of which are shaped to conformably seat upon the inlets3 ofthe bath cock, as is most clearly shown in Fig. 6, said support 12 being designed to sustain the major portion of the weight of the parts composing the invention, thus relieving the mouth por; tion of the cock from performing that duty.
The pipe 11 is of suitable length and has a hand-operated three-way control who 13 mounted upon its upper end. Coupled to" the upper end of said valve 13'is the lower end of a tube 14 which, on account of its pcculiar character, .Wlll hereinafter be termed a cylinder. Said cylinder has telescopically received therein the lower portion f a tube 15 of materially, smaller diameter than said cylinder, said tub lli carry ng uponits lower end an encircling piston 16. l inerted to the upper end of the tube 15; 1) us oi an elbow coupling 17 is one end of 2 short horizontally l' ed Lube S to the opposite .-;-..3 1 which .s connect d one arm. if." of a hinge \alw il ounccwd to the opposite arm 21 of said'hing'c salve a tuliulnrarni 31 wh h carries upon its outer cud .1 circular pr-rim zited show-1w ring 22 of u coi inon form.
Tire three-way valve 13 has a luternll Y the-oil:rough, as shown in Fig. 7, so
bcn' designed toZi-eceive thereon one end of a flexible hose 24 having a spray nozzle :5: on its opposite end, as shown in. .l ig. 2. As is obvious, the hunting part 13' oi valve 13 may be turned from the sition shown in Fig. 7 to either a position whcrein water is supplied both to the spray nozzle 25 and to the shower ring 22 or to the latter alone, according to the direction of movement of said part 13, the latter being provldcd with a st 'alghtdlametrical passage 2G therethrough and also with a radially disposed passage 2'? which communicates at itsinner end with'said passage 26.
When in its closed position the valve 13 pernnts the water to drain from the superposed parts tl'n'oiigh the hose 2% and spray Vt'hen a full head of water is admitted to the cylinder 14 by the opening of valve 13, the pressure of the water acts upon the pistondl'i carried by tube 15, which normallv occupies the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I and said piston and tube are tluu-ehy elevated to the full line position shown in said figure. Asls obvlous, the u J- ward movementof the tube 15 may e is of that type wherein is employed a pair of similar pivotally connected members having llat engaging iaces forming a ground joint, one oi. said faces being adapted for rotary movement upon the other, and said Faces are provided with portsadapted to be brought into and out of registration for respectively permitting and cutting off com munication between said members. In the present case a pair of ports 29 in the face of the movable member of the valve are adapted to be carried into register with similar ports 30 provided in the C(JfilZ-tttltlllg tare of the stationary member of the valve when the tubular ring-carrying arm 31 oceupies its extended or horizontal position. The pivot pin 35 connecting the members of said hinge 'alve preferably has wings 36 on its outer end whereby it may be adjusted to functionally secure said members against rotation,
A dial Ali! is preferably provided at the outer end ot the control valve 13, the same having indicated thereon the position to which an indicator 33 carried by the operating stem 34; must be turned to cause the valve to perform its various functions.
lVhilc I have described in detail a preferred form of my invention, it is to be undcrstood that various changes may he made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. l \Vhat is claimed is- 1. The combination with a bath cock, of an upright tube coupled to said cock, an upright cylinder connected to the uppcrend of said tube, a pipeot materially less diameter than said cylinder telescoped within the upper end of the latter, a piston encircling the lower end. of said pipe and movable within said cylinder, said piston preventing withdrawal of said pipe from said cylinder a hinge valve having one arm connected to the upper end of said pipe, and a shower ring connected to the opposite arm of said from a. suspended position to a horizonta position, and vice versa, respectively opening and closing said valve, said pistonand superposed connected parts being autovalve, said ring being adapted to swing ,mutically elevatable under the pressure of water admitted to the cylinder when sai ring occupies suspended position. 2. In a shower attachment for bath tubs,
the combinationwith an upright cylinder and means connecting said cylinder with a bath cock, of a pipe partially disposed within and having vertical movement with respect to said cylinder, a piston disposed about the lower end of said pipe and preventing withdrawal of said pipe from said 0yli11(l81',tl18 upper end of said pipe extending above the top of said cylinder, a shower ring, a hinge valve connecting said shower a' ing to the upper end of said pipe, said ring being adapted to be swung from a suspended to a horizontal position, and vice versa, respectively opening and closing said valve, said piston and superposed connected parts being automatically elevated under the pressure of water admitted to the cylinder when said ring occupies suspended osition.
In testimony whereof, I afllx my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses. a
' PETER SEI TNER.
