To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, InvIN W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cosmopolis, in the county of Grays Harbor and State of Vfashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Setting or Guiding Devices for Band Resaw- Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its primary object to provide effective and reliable means for accurately setting the guide rolls for the stock or lumber.
It is another important object of the invention to provide improved means "for mounting the roll frames and operatively connecting the same with the setting mechanism which will permit of a maximum flexibility of action of the rolls.
It is an additional object of the present invention to provide improved operating means for easily, quickly and accurately setting the rolls with respect to the central cutting line of the saw, said means permitting of frequent and rapid changes in the positions of the rolls at any time during the operation of the machine.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which,

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates a suitable frame structure in which two horizontally disposed, parallel f-beams 6 are mounted or supported for longitudinal shifting movement. These beams are provided upon their corresponding ends with the upwardly projecting lugs or shoulders 7, and upon the upper face of each beam, contiguous to the shoulder 7 thereon, a longitudinally extending rack 8 is slidably mounted.

A hollow shaft or tube 13 is rotatably mounted in this bearing member and a shaft 14 rotates within this tube. Upon the tube 13, a pinion 15 is fixed, said pinion meslnng with the teeth of one of the racks 8. A pinion 16 is also fixed upon the shaft 14 and meshes with the other of said racks. A. bracket 17 is fixed upon the frame 5 and the tube 13 and shaft 14 extend through a hub 18 formed upon said bracket. Upon the hub 18, a dial plate 19 is loosely mounted for turning movement, and a section is cut out of the outer edge of said dial plate, as shownat 20, through whicha lug 21 formed This arm is also loosely mounted for turning movement upon the hub 18. To the lug 2-1, a second dial plate 23 is fixed and this dial plate is loosely engaged upon the projecting end of the shaft it. A lever 24 is fixed upon this end of the shaft and carries a spring-pressed latch dog for engagement with spaced notches indicated at 25, formed in the pe riphery of said dial plate. A second lever 26 is fixed upon the end of the tube' or hollow shaft 13 between the two dial plates 19 and 23, and this lever also carries a springpressed dog for engagement in notches provided in the periphery of the plate 19. To
each of the dial plates 19 and 23, an outwardly projecting arm 27 is fixed and through the outer end of each of said arms,
each rod between the arms 27 and the' bracket. It will thus be apparent that, by adjusting the nuts 29, the dial plates 19 and 23 may be turned with respect to the looking levers 2st and 26 and a very fine adjustment of the extent of rotation of the shafts 13 and 14, when the levers are actuated, obtained. A. pair of cylinders 31 are suitably mounted in the frame 5 above the bars 6 and the racks 8, and a piston is mounted to reciprocate within each of these cylinders. The rod 32 of one of the pistons is connected to the frame 9 of the roll 10. The rod 33 extends from the piston in the other of the cylinders 31 in a relatively opposite direction and, to the outer end thereof, the block or connecting head=34 is secured, said head being connected to a rod 35 which is also connected to the end of the beam (5 upon which the frame of the roll 10 is secured, as indicated at 36.
37 designates the steam or compressed air supply pipes which are connected to the opposite ends of each cylinder 31. A valve 38 is interposed between each pair of pipes 37 and the feed pipe 37. The valve 38 has anarm 39 yieldingly held against movement in one direction by a spring 40. Foot levers 41 are suitably mounted upon the bed of the machine frame, and to the shaft of each lever an arm 42 is fixed. Rods 43 connect these arms 42 to the respective valve arms 39.
In the operation of the mechanism above described, when the operator desires to set or position the rolls 10, 10 for the passage of a board between the same, he presses down upon the foot levers 41 so that steam is admitted to the forward ends of the cylinders 31 and the frame 9 carrying the roll 10 will move back or away from the central cutting line of the saw, while the other.
frame 9 of the roll 10 will be shifted to the cutting line. It will be apparent that, in this movement of the roll frames, the beams 6 are also longitudinally shifted so that the shoulders 7 thereon are moved out of abutting contact with the ends of the racks 8 which are held against movement by the pinions 15 and 16. The operator now swings the dial levers 24 and 26 to rotate the shafts 13 and 14 and thereby move the racks 8 longitudinally with respect to the beams 6 on which they are mounted. After the levers have been moved to the predetermined positions upon the dial plate and locked in connection therewith, pressure upon the foot levers 41 is released so that the valves 38 will be opened and steam admitted to the other ends of the cylinders 31. This steam acting upon the pistons in said cylinders will shift the frames 9 and rolls 10 and 10 until they are disposed in the desired spaced relation in accordance with the thickness of the board. This movement continues until the hi gs 7 on the beams abut against the ends of the racks 8. The frame 9 and roll 10 therefore cannot shift with respect to the opposed frame and roll 10 during the passage of the board between the rolls but, as will be seen from reference to Fig. 5 of the drawthe parts of the mechanism. The steam pressure within the cylinder 31 will immediately act to return the roll to its normal position and, at all times, hold said roll 10 in frictional contact with the face of the board.
Fronr the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the mechanism will be clearly and fully understood. By providing the sliding racks which may be quickly and accurately set by shifting the dial levers to predetermined positions, it will be apparent that the guiding rolls for the board can be disposed with respect to each other with absolute accuracy. By also utilizing steam or compressed air as the agency for shifting the rolls and their frames, considerable manual labor incident to the proper setting of the rolls in devices heretofore used for this purpose, is obviated, and the adjustment or setting of the rolls much more quickly accomplished. The positions of the rolls may be frequently and rapidly changed when necessary without stopping the operation of the band res-aw. Attention is also directed to the very simple and compact arrangement of the dials and setting levers and the means for adjusting said dials to obtain a more minute adjust ment of the shiftable racks.
The several structural features of my invention above referred to are, of course, susceptible of considerable modification with respect to their form, proportion and relative arrangement and it is, therefore, to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the precise mounting of the cylinders or of the beams 6 upon the supporting frame, or to any other purely mechanical details, but reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes in this regard as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. In mechanism of the character described, parallel longitudinally movable beams, a presser roll mounted upon each of said beams, means for simultaneously shifting said beams and the presser rolls, and independently adjustable stops for engagement by the respective beams to limit their movement in one direction and permit of a continued movement of one beam with respect to the other.
2. In mechanism of the character described, parallel longitudinally movable beams, a presser roll mounted upon each of said beams, means operatively connected to the beams to move the same in unison in either direction, a stop element movably mounted upon each beam, and means for adjusting the stop element upon the beam and holding the same stationary with re spect thereto in position for operative engagement by the beam to limit the move ment of each beam in one direction and thereby predetermine the space between the presser rolls.
3. In mechanism of the character described, presser rolls mounted for shifting movement toward or from each other, means for predetermining the desired relative positions of the rolls, means for subsequently shifting the rolls to such position, and means for preventing further movement of the rolls in one direction from their predetermined set positions, said means permitting of the bodily shifting movement of one of the rolls away from the other roll but positively preventing such movement by the latter roll.
4. ln mechanism of the character described, parallel longitudinally movable bcams, a pressor roll mounted upon each beam, means for simultaneously moving the beams in each direction, and manually operable, independently adjustable stop elements mounted upon the beams, each of said beams being provided with means for engagement with the stop element thereon to limit the movement of the beam in one direction.
5. In mechanism of the character described, a pair of presser rollers mounted for shifting movement toward or from each other, means for shifting the rolls in unison in either direction, relatively adjustable stop elements, manually operable means for independently adjusting said elements, and means operatively connected to the rolls and movable therewith to engage the respective stop elements and limit the movement of the rolls to their set positions.
6. In mechanism of the character described, a pair of rolls shifta-ble toward or from each other, beams upon which the respective rolls are mounted, racks longitudinally adjustable upon the beams, manually operable means for independently adjusting said racks, each of the beams being provided with a stop for engagement with the rack thereon, and manually controlled fluid actuated means for simultaneously shifting the rolls and the beams to their set positions, such movement being limited by the engagement of said stops with the adjustable racks.
7. In mechanism of the character described, rack frames, beams upon which the respective frames are mounted, rolls journaled in said frames, each of the beams being provided with a stop lug, manually controlled fluid actuated means for shifting the roll frames and the beams to move the rolls to their set positions, and independently adjustable elements adapted to be engaged by the lugs on the respective beams whereby such movement is limited and the set positions of the rolls predetermined.
8. In mechanism of the character described, a pair of longitudinally shiftable beams, a roll mounted upon each of the beams, an adjustable element carried by each beam, manually operable means for independently adjusting said elements, said means also locking said elements against movement with the beams, each of the beams having a stop thereon for engagement with one of said elements, and fluid actuated means to shift the beams and the rolls carried thereby and engage the stops on the beams with the adjustable elements whereby the movement of the rolls to their pre determined set positions is limited.
9. In mechanism of the character described, a pair of longitudinally shiftable beams, a roll mounted upon each of said beams, fluid actuated means to shift said rolls and the beams and dispose the rolls in their set positions, and manually op erable means with which the respective beams are adapted to eoiiperatively engage and limit such movement whereby the set positions of the rolls may be predetermined.
