The object of the invention is'to provide :rn-improved car body adapted to be employed in transporting a plurality of kinds of materials separated by one or more bulk'- heads which divide the interior ofl the car body into a plurality .of compartments.
Another objectis to provide simple means for merging said compartments into a lesser number and to close an opening in the car roof, and to provide with theforegoing a modified type of roof framing and trackway combined which is designed to carry a portable hoist Vadapted to actuate said bulkheads.

Connected with the upper end of the bulkhead 10 are castings 51 at eachside ofthe bulkhead, which castings preferably carry trunnions adapted to be seated in openmouthed pockets in the brackets 8 and as the castings 51 are connected by vbolts 0r equivalent means 52 with the upper ends of the bulkheads 10, said bulkheads are thereby. supported when lowered toa vertical position.
Extending at an angular relation with they bulkhead 10 are lugs 54, with which are Connected at their loweitends with said'b' pivotally connected links 55, which links in turn are connected with the short legs 56 of bell-crank-levers A pivoted at 57 in brackets 58, which are secured to the inner faces of said walls 9. The flanged wheels support said closure while it is travcling on the lower flange of the channel Z0 and is supported` thereby. Thus, lifting the bulkhead from its vertical to horizontal position, during which time it will swing on` the trunnions indicated, automatically closes the roof opening to prevent surreptitious entrance to the interior of the car, and when the bulkhead'is again lowered to vertical position the closure 21 will be automatically retracted to the position shown in full lines in said Fig. l, thereby leaving said roof openingclosed only by the hatch cover 7, as indicated, which hatch cover may be readily removed for the insertion ot' lading or suitable material into the end compartment 6.
For some reasons, the slidable carriage to Yclose the roof opening is preferred though it may be desirable to employ the construction illustrated in Fig. 6 in which a bulkhead 10 is connected to a pivotally mounted closure 21a by means of the link 55a having an offset bend a to accommodate the/trunnions on whichiswing the biilkbeads. Links 55a are. pivotally connected with the bulkhead and closure as indicated in Fig. 6 and when the bulkhead is lifted to the dotted,
closure '21a into register with the roof opening In some instances it may be desirable to employ a portable hoist to lift one bulkhead at a time in which case a trackway as 40 or 40* may be employed for that purpose.
B oth trackways coperate with the carlines 41 in forming the roof structure, the trackway lOa connecting said carlin'es as shown in Fig. 1, and being secured thereto, in F ig. 8 the trackway ll() forms -the tension member of a roof truss frame in whichv ft2 is the ridge or compression member and 41 the carlines or struts.
What I claim is: l. ln arailway car, a roof having an opening therein, a compartment accessible through said opening, a bulkhead adapted to occupy a vertical position and adapted to swing upwardly toward said roof, and means for swinging said bulkhead toward said roof, in combination with a. link pivotally connected with said bulkhead and a closure for saidopening connected with said link and adapted to register with said opening when the bulkhead swings upwardly toward said roof. In a railway car, a roof having an opening therein, a. compartment accessible through said opening, a bulkhead adapted to occupy a position eatending transversely of vsaid car and adapted to swing upwardly toward said roof, a cable connected with said bulkhead and means for winding said cable for swinging said bulkhead toward said roof, in. combination with a link pivotally connected with said bulkhead and a closure for said opening pivotally connected with said link and adapted to register with said opening when the bulkhead swings up wardly toward said roof.

In a railway car, a roof having an opening therein, a compartment accessible through said opening, a bulkhead adapted to occupy a vertical position to divide said car into a plurality 'of compartments and adapted to swing upwardly toward said roof,to thereby merge said compartment-s, in combination with a closure for said opening a link having an oll'set portion intermediate the bulkhead and said closure the link being actuated by the bulkhead and adapted to automatically cause the closure to register with said opening when the bulkhead is lifted.
