Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WooDsoN C. TUcKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benham, in the county of Harlan and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blasting-Rods, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to blasting rods.
The object of my invention is to improve blasting rods, making them more simple, compact, and providing them with coperating parts so related as to meet all of the requirements for successful commercial use. This object is accomplished by providing an 'expansible member or shell, an actuator within said shell, and means actuated by said actuator for expanding said expansible member, and an expansion ring surrounding said shell acting in opposition to said means.
The invention is illustrated on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved blasting rod; Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are sectional views taken respectively in the planes of lines 2 2, 3 3, 4--4 and 5-5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view of my blasting rod showing parts of the shell expanded by the expansion means.
The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the description and drawings, and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My improved blasting rod includes an expansible shell 10 including a. plurality of radially movable members 11 having a central hollow portion 12 for the reception of an actuator or threaded member 13 having a handle 14, by means of which said actuator or member may be actuated. Said shell 10 is provided with recesses 15 for the reception of internally threaded expansion blocks 16, which surround the threaded actuator 13 and travel thereon when the said lthreaded actuator is rotated. These expansion blocks 16 are wedge-shaped, and portions 17 thereof are adapted to pass into engagement with the inclined walls 18 of the recesses 15 for expanding the shell or expansible member 10 when it is desired so to do. This shell 10 is provided with a plurality of exterior annular grooves 19 in which are located expansion rings 20, which act in opposition to the expansion blocks 16 to hold the expansion member or the parts thereof in their innermost position. One end of the shell is provided with a copper cap 21 to avoid the possibility of ignition by sparks produced by friction in inserting the blasting rod in a drill hole.
Surrounding the actuator 13 is a collar 22 which is secured to the actuator by a set screw 23 for limiting the inward movement of said actuator. This actuator is provided with an opening 24 extending therethrough for the reception of a fuse or electric wires, or for the use of a squib for igniting purposes.
By means of this arrangement after the hole has been drilled and the powder inserted therein, this blasting rod may be quickly introduced into the hole, the outer shell thereof expanded, and the charge fired in the minimum amount of time and with the greatest amount of safety, rendering blasting simple, inexpensive and safe in operation.
There may be various modifications of the arrangement herein shown and described, and it is my intention to cover all such modifications which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
