To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, Bowm TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warwick, in the county of Summit and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specication.

This linvention relates to improvements in padlocks.

In carrying out the present invention,it is my purpose to providea padlock which will be found' especially useful for locking railroad car doors in closed position and which will be proof aga-inst opening by unauthorized parties. It is also my purpose to provide a lock of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity7 e'iiciency and durability, which may be opened only by those knowing the combination, and which will embody comparatively few parts and these so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the i scope of the claims.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a padlock constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view' therethrough showing the parts in locking position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in unlocked position. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a casing including side walls spaced apart in parallelism, end walls and top and bottom walls. Formed in the top wall of the casing adjacent to one end wall thereof is an opening 2, while formed in such wall adjacent to the other end wall is an opening 3.

4 designates the shackle and one end of the shackle is passed through the opening 2 and pivoted upon a pin 5 passed through the side walls of the casing, while the other end of the shackle works in the opening 3 and is formed with a hook 6. Passed through the side walls of the casing 1 a short distance below the top wall at one side of the vertical center of the casing is a pin 7 and mounted between its ends upon the pin 7 and adapted to turn therewith is a bar 8 h avlng one end formed with a hook 9 adapted to engage the hook 6y on the shackle 4,

and the other end cut out as at 10 contiguous to the lower edge of the bar.

11 designates a pin journaled in the side walls of the casing and mounted between its ends upon the pin 11 within the casing is' a bar 12 having one end cut out as at 13V contiguous to the upper edge thereof and adapted to fit into the cut out portion 10 of the bar 8 when the bars 8 and 12 are in locking position. Passed through the side walls of the casing immediately above the bar 12 and at one side o-f the pin 11 is a pin 14 and mounted upon the pin 14 is a holding pivoted lug 15, while arranged upon the opposite side of the pin 11 and disposed in a plane above that of the pin 14 is a pin 16 passed through the side walls of the casing and mounted upon the pin 16 is a pivoted lug 17-. Arranged below the meeting ends of the bars 8 and 12 and passed throu h the side walls of the casing is a pin 1 and mounted upon the pin 18 between its ends is a holding bar 19 having one end adapted to engage beneath the bars 8 and 12 at the meeting ends thereof to hold such bars in alinement with each other.

20- designates a pin journaled in the side walls of the casing and arranged upon one side of the bar 19 and secured to the pin 20 is a pivoted arm 21 having one end thereof adapted to engage the bar 19 to hold the latter in locking position.

In the present instance, the lower edge of the bar 12 is equipped with a. shoulder 22 adapted to be engaged by the bar 19 and cooperating with the arm 21 to hold the bar 19 in locking position. Suitably fastened to one side wall of the casing 1 within the latter and arranged above the bars 8 and 12 at the meeting ends thereof is a stop 23.-

'Ihe ends of the pins 7 11, 14, 16, 18 and 20 project beyond one side wall of the casing and are equipped with indicating fingers 24 respectively movable over dials 25 fastened to such side wall of the casing concentrically of the respective pins.

In practice, when the parts of the lock are in locking position the bars 8 and 12 are in alinement with each other so that the hook 9 may engage the hook 6 to hold the shackle 4 against opening movement; the bar 19 is in position to engage the lower edge of the bar 12 at the meeting ends therel l ofv and is held in such position by the'block 21 and the block 23, While the lug l5 rides against the upper edge of the bar 12 and the lug 17 is in a position to engage one end of the lug 15 and the adjacent end orp the bar 12, thereby holding the bars 8 and 12 in locking position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. lwhen, however, it is' desired to release the shackle 4, the pin 2O is rotated to move the arm 21 to release the bar 19, and the bar 19 swung past the shoulder 22 to disengage the meeting ends of the bars 8 and 12. rlhe lug 15 is now swung in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 5 to release the upper edge of the bar 12 and the lug 17 swung' outof engagement with the upper edge or' the bar 12. l/Vhen the bars 8 and 12 are thus released, the meeting ends thereof drop so that the hook 9 will disengage the hook (l, thereby permitting the shackle to be swung to open position. rlfhe fingers 2Liand the dials 25 indica-te, to those knowing the combination, the positions of the various bars and blocks in the casing and by rotating the pins until the lingers correspond with the prescribed numerals on the dials, the mechanism of the look may be actuated to locking and unlocking position, as is readily understood.

1. A pad lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivoted to the casing at one end and having the other end movable into and out of the casing, coacting bars pivoted Within the casing, one of said bars being formed With a hook toengage the last-named end of said shackle to lock the shackle in closed position, a bar in said casing acting upon the other of the first-named bars to hold the shackle engaging bar in engagement with the shackle, and blocks cooperating with each other to maintain the last-named bar in locking position.

2. A padlock comprising a casing, a

shackle pivoted to the casing at one end and e5 having the other end movable into and out of the casing, coacting bars pivoted Within the casing, one of said bars being formed with a hook to engage the last-named end of said shackle to lock the'shackle in closed position, a bar in said casing acting upon the other of the first-named bars to hold the shackle engaging bar in engagement With the shackle, blocks cooperating With each other to maintain the last-named bar in locking position, and lugs pivoted Within the casing and cooperating With the secondnamed bar to hold the irst-named bars in locking engagement with each other.

3. A pad lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivoted to the casing at one end and having' the other end movable into and out of the casing, coacting bars pivoted Within the casing, one of said bars being formed With a hook to engage the last-named end of said shackle to lock the shackle in closed position, a bar in said casing acting upon the other of the tiret-named bars to hold the shackle engaging bar in engagement with the shackle, blocks cooperating With each other to maintain the last-named bar in locking position, lugs pivoted Within the casing and cooperating With the secondnamed bar to hold the first-named bars in locking engagement With each other, pins carrying said bars, said block and said lugs, fingers on said pins, and dials secured to said casing and over which said fingers may he movable to indicate the positions of the various elements in the casing.
