1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST H. ScriMIn'r, a citizen of the United States, l'SlfllIlg at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Friction Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of my improved rigging, partly'in section, showing its appl cation to a railroad car; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 3 is av section on lines IIIIII of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a section on lines IVIV of Fig. 1."
My invention relates to friction draft r1gging and consists inprovidingtelescoplng casings combined with the frictional mech anism cooperating with oneof the casings, and in the parts hereinafter particularly described. '1
Referring to the drawings, 2 indicates an inner casing or friction barrel of cylindrical form, which has an enlarged portion 3 formed integral therewith, which is adapted to abut against the draft sill stops 4 attached to the draft sills'5 of the car structure. Seated within the rear of the casing 2 are the springs 6 and 7, the spring 7 being .located within the spring 6 and both of which abut at their rear ends against the rearof the casing 2. The forward end of the spring 6 bears againstfthe rear fiat face of the real-most cone ring 8, and forwardly of this cone 8 are the coneri'iigs 9 and the cone ring 10. The ring 10 bears against the front follower or outer casing 11. The cones 8, 9 and 10 are spaced apart by a plurality of segmental rings12, whi ch have a frictional bearing against theinterior of the inner casing 2, and which, with the casing 2, comprise the frictional elements of the rigging. The conical or wedging face of each cone ring isin bearing engagement,
with the corresponding conical faces of the adjacent segmental rings and has bearing faces of the same inclination as those of the adjacent faces of the segmental rings. Abntting against the cone 10 and within the cone rings, is a plunger or releasing member 13 which has an operating engagement with the inner or releasing spring7. Upon the releasing member 13 are shoulders 14 and 15, which are adapted to bear against corresponding surfaces on the cones 9 and act to drive them toward the open end of the casing '2 to release their wedging engagements with the segments 12 upon the completion of the, butting or draft stresses.
The outer casing 11, which also comprises the front follower, is cylindrical in form and is adapted to telescope with the inner casing 2. Upon the periphery of the inner casing 2 are arranged a plurality of pockets 16, in which are seated the rear ends of the springs 17, and upon the periphery of the outer casing 11 are also arranged a plurality of pockets 18, corresponding to thepockets 16, within which are seated the forward ends of the spring 17.
The outer casing or front follower 11 is preferably rectangular in form and bears against the forwvard draft sill stops 19.
The numeral\20 indicates the usual form of yoke which is shank 21.
WVhen under draft or buffing strains the two casings will telescope, thus compressing the springs 17, as the friction segments and wedge rings are driven into the inner casing, and when the pressure is relieved the springs 17 will drive the outer casing, and with it the coupler, outwardly to normal position, thus permitting the wedges and segments within the inner casing to be restored to normal position by the springs 6 and 7.
It is obvious that my invention may be used with draft riggings of various forms and constructions, and that many changes may be made therein, since lVhat I claim is:
1. In a draft rigging, a barrel, frictional and spring mechanism contained therein, a follower arranged externally of the barrel, and spring mechanism on the exterior of the barrel adapted to restore the follower secured to the coupler and the coupler to normal position after V the frictional mechanism, and separating springs between said barrel and follower seated in said chambers.
3. In a draft-rigging, telescoping casings,
