The slotting knives 7 and 8 cooperate with dies 11 and 12, respectively, carried by the 4b ed of the machine, in suitable die holders 13 and 14. Obviously, the die holders must be adjusted toward or away fromveach other when the slotting knives 7 and 8 are adjusted toward or away from each other. This is accomplished by making each of the die holders 13 and 14 independently adjustable longitudinally. of the machine by mounting eachY of said die holders on a guide-way 85 formedon the bed of the machine, as best shown in Fig. 1. The lower Y portions of the die holders 13 and 14 are, of course, so shapedas to coperate with the guide-way 85. For this purpose, the knives 20 and 21 are mounted on knife holders 22 and 23, respectively, which, in turn, are adjustably carried by the main knife holders 9 and 10 by means of the bolts 24 and 25. By loosening each of these bolts, ,the holders 22 and V23, and hence the knives which they carry, may be adjusted toward and away from the fron-t of the machine to such a position that the trimmed flap will -be of the proper length. The relatively short knives 2O and 21 just'described coperate with dies 26 and 27, respectively, mounted in the die holders 28 and 2 9. These. die holders also preferably carry dies 30 and 31 to coperatewith the knives 7 and 8, in addition to the dies 11 and 12 intended for this purpose.
' Obviously the die holders 28 and 29 and the dies 26 and 27 which theycarry, must be adjusted on the bed of the machine, in accordance with the adjustment ofthe. knives 20and 21. Inorder to permit of such adjustment, the holders 28 and 29 are slidably l mounted on the holders 13 and 14, respectively, by means of bolts 34 and 35, each having a T-head 36 engaging in a corre-' ,spondingly shaped recess provided in the holders 28 'and 29, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These bolts are normally tightened to Vlock the holders28 and 29 to the holders 13 and 14, but are loosened to permit adjusti the front of the machine to effect adjustment .1,192,407 VMg3 ment of thefholders 28and 29 `with yrespect to the holders 13 and 14. The movement of the casting r37, which so adjusts the position of the dieholders 28and 29 transversely ofthe machine is effected by'mounting said casting 37 upon suitable guides, kone of which is shown at 39 in Fig. 1. The casting 37 has secured thereto, two forwardly projectingV shafts 40, the outer extremital portions of 'which are toothed as shown at 41, in Fig. 4, to provide racks with which pinions 42 are adapted to cooperate. The pinions 42 rarecarried bythe vends of a stub shaft 43, as best shown in Fig. 3, which, in turn, is mounted ina bracket 44 secured to the bed of the machine. The stub yshaft 43 carries at its intermediate portion, a pinion 45 meshingr with the pinion 4G carried by an actuating shaft47, which runs parallel to the front of the machine kto a point where it may be conveniently actuated by the attendant. As will be seen from Figs. 2 and 3, this shaft 47 passes throughtlie front portions of die holders 13 and 14. WhenV so actuated, it is obvious that the pinions 42 meshing with the racks 41 will cause longitudinal movement ofthe latter, and as they are rigidly secured to the casting 37 ,l the said casting 4will be shifted upon the guides 39. This movement of the casting 37 will be transmitted through the T-headed bolts 38 to the die holder-S28 and 29. l/Vhen the die holders 13 and 414 are adjusted longitudinally of the machine by the racks 18 and the pinions 18,the die holders 28 and 29, which then move with the die holders 13 and 14, simply slide along the casting 37, due to the bolt and slot connection effected by means of the bolt 38. The bolts 38 may be rst lo0sened to permit this adjustment, and when subsequently tightened, aid in locking the parts in adjusted position. i
By the! construction so far described, itis obvious that if the die holders 13 and 14 are moved toward 'each other "until the dies 26 and 27 come in contact, and ifthe slotting knives 7 and 8 arey adjustedftoward each other until the extremities ofrtherelatively short `knives 2O and 21 contact,"a flap will be formed on .the box blankof minimum width measuring between the slots. Furthermore, the knives 20 i and 21, in their contacting relation, constitute in effect a continuous vtrimming knife which will trim the outer yedgejportion from thelap: toreduce its length measuring from its bendingcrease to the louter edge ofi the flap. For flaps of greater width than the com bned length of the knives 20 and 21, it is necessary to call into operation, the following trimming mechanism, ,the cutting elements of which are arranged in alinement with the knives 20 yand 21 to continue the cut made inthe blank by said knives 2O and 21 when the knives 20 and 21 are not in contacting relation.l In other words, when the knives 20 and 21 are separated by adjustinent of the slotting knives `7 and 8, and
whentheir coperatingfdies on the bed of the machine are separated in accordance therewith, the knives 2O and 21 and coper ating dies will obviously not produce a cut which extends completely across the flap.
The intermediate portion of the flap will remain uncut. The trimming `mechanism rabove mentioned to cut the intermediate portion of the iap not cut by the knives 2O and 21 is so designedy as to permit adjustment of the knives 7 and 8 and dieholdeis 13 and 14, within certain limits without destroying the continuity of .the cutacross the iiap and produced by the knives 20 and 21,
the dies coperating therewith, and the trimming mechanism now to be described. This trimming mechanism preferably comprises a lower movable knife,.best shown at 48,
and which is arranged in alinement with the relatively short trimming knives 20 andg21 when the parts are in their operative positions. This lower trimming knife'48 is secured to a casting 49, which is gibbed into the casting 37 and adapted to reciprocate in a vertical direction with respect to said casting 37, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Due to the fact that the casting 49 is gibbed into Lcasting 37, the said casting 49, and hence the knife 48,*will be adjusted back and forth with the die holders 28 andy 29. The knife 48 is normally held below the dies 26 and 27, so as not to interfere with the descent of the knives 2O and 21. The die withwhich theknife 48 coperates is shown at 50,l and as this is supported above the dies 26 and 27 it is obvious that the knife 48 and die 50 may extend all the way from slotting knife 7 to slotting knife 8, under which conditions, a flap of the minimum width would be formed on the' blank by the use of the trimming mechanism. As the holders 13 Land 14 and slotting knives 7 and 8 may be moved apart vuntil the movable knife 48 of theV trimming mechanism. and the upper stationary `die 50 justwiill thel space between the relatively short trimming knives 20and 21, it is ob-` Yiiap by means ofthe knives 2O and 21 and the intermediate trimming mechanism comprising the knife 48 and die 50. The knives 7 and 8 and holders 13 and 14 should not,
however, bemoved far enough apart to cause Va gap between the extremities of the knife 48 and die 50 on the one hand, and the relatively short trimming knives 20 and 21 on the other hand, as in this event, the cut across the flap would not` be continuous.
In Fig. 4, the holders 13 and 14 and slotting knives 7 and 8 are shown adjusted to such position that the intermediate trimming mechanism comprising the movable knife 48:and die 50 just occupies the space between the ends of the knives 20 land 2l'. Therefore, the parts are set for cutting a flapV of the maximum width by the use of the elements of the trimming mechanism shown.

The stationary die 50 above referred to for coperation with the movable knife 48 of the intermediate trimming mechanism may be carried by a holder 51,'which, in turn, is supported by a bracket 52 projecting rearwardly and slidably mounted in a larger 'bracket 53,k as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In
order to render the bracket 52 slidable in the bracket 53, the latter is provided with guide-ways 54 in which correspondingly shaped guides on the bracket 52 are mounted, and by this means, the bracket 52, and hence the die 50, may be adjusted toward and away from the front of the machine, in accordance with corresponding adjustments of the movable knife 48. Movement of the 45' bracket 52 in the guides 54 may be effected by means of a vertical shaft 55 journaled in the bracket 53 and carrying at its lower end, a spiral gear 55 which meshes with a spiral gear 56. The bracket 52 has mounted therein, a screw shaft 57 which is xedly carried by said bracket so that it will not turn. The spiral gear 56 has a threaded hub coperating with the screw 57, so that when said spiral gear 56 is turned, the screw shaft and hence, the' bracket 52, in which it is mounted, will Vbe shifted. The turning movements of the shaft 55 to effect this adjustment of the bracket 52 may be produced from an actuating shaft 95 carrying a handwheel 96 and meshing beveled gears 97 and 98, carried 'by the shafts 95 and 55, respec-V tively. Before the adjustment of the bracket 52 can be effected by the above means, it is rs't necessary to loosen the gibs 52 and 53. When these gibs are tightened after adjust- If it is desired to cut a flap ofV greater width, a longer knife 48 may be emment of the bracket 52, they serve to secure the same in place. f Y
Vertical reciprocation of the casting 49 to'y effect movements of the knife 48 are caused by av link 59 pivotally connected to a shaft 60.v The connection between the link 59 and shaft 60 is'such, however, as to permit adjustment of the castings 37 and 49 on the guides 39, (Fig. 1), and for this purpose, the lower end of the link 59 is permitted to slide on the shaft 60. The shaft 60 has a bodily up and down movement imparted thereto by means of a rock lever 61 mounted to oscillate about the axis of the shaft 62, which, in turn, is mounted in the brackets 63 (Figs. 1 and 2). By this construction, it is obvious that rockingmovements of the lever 61 will eiect vertical reciprocation of the casting 49. To impart such rocking movements to the lever 61, two camsv are-employed which are secured tol the maini actuating shaft 3 of the machine. These cams are shown at 64 and 65. The camv 65 actuates a cam lever 66 pivoted intermediate its ends, as shown at 67. It is connected at its rear end to a link 68, which, in turn, is pivotally connected to a lever 69 pivoted at one end to the bracket 53, as'shown at 70.
A link 71, pivotally connected` to the inter- Y mediate portion of the lever 69serves to rock the lever y61 about the shaft 62. It will be noted, however, that the cam 65,
through the connections just described, is
effective only for raising the knife 48, and in order to return the same to its lowermost position, the cam 64 acts upon a cam lever 72 pivoted 'intermediate its ends, as at 73, and connected by means of a link 74 to rock lever 61. The link 74, however, is connected to the lever 61 at the point 75, so that as the cam lever-.72 is actuated by thevcam 64, the link 74 will berraised, thereby rocking the lever 61 in such a direction as to lower the' casting 49. As the cam 64 serves to lower the knife 48 and the cam 65 serves to raise the same, it is obvious that the dwells and depressions on the cams must be so related that-when the dwell of one cam is acting upon the corresponding cam lever, the depression of the other cam must permit its cam lever to remain in its raised position, and viceversa.
In order to properly direct the blanks between the cutting elements, upturned guiding portions 76 are provided on the upper die holder 51 and a sheet-metal guide, shown at 77, serves to support and direct the midportion of the blank between the cutting elements. The usual strippers 78 may-be located adjacent the slottingknives 7 and 8 to strip the slotted blank from the knives as they ascend.
Before the'machine is set in operation, the parts must be set or adjusted to produce a blank according tol given specifications, as
follows. The slotting knives 7 and 8 and their coperating die holders 13 and 14 are adjusted the proper distance apart by means of the shafts 15.` The die holders 28 and 29 are then adjustedbby turning the shaft 47,
' and as the movable knife 48 moves with said die holders 28 and 29, this operation properly positions the movable knife 48 and the die holders 28 and 29 to trim the fiap to ythe proper length.` The bracket52fis then ad-' vanced by means of the hand-wheel 96 until the upper die`k50, which cooperates withy the movable knife 48, is slightly in advance of said knife 48.- The movable knife 48 is then raised and the bracket 52, carrying the die 50, is movedy back until said die50 makes contact with the movable knife 48. It now remains to properly position the relatively7 short trimming knives` 20 and :21, so that they will properly coperate with the previously adjusted die holders 28 rand 29 `and the dies 26 and 27, which they carry. AThis is `accomplished by loosening the boltswhich secure the holders 22 and 23 of the kknives 20- and 21, to the main knife holders 9 andv 10, and then adjustingthe position of said holders 22 and 23k until the relatively short trimming knives 20 and 21 assume a position slightly to the rear of the dies 26 and 27. Themain knife bar 2 is then lowered, and while in its lowermost position, the relatively short knives 20 and 21 are advanced until they contact with the dies 26 and 27. All the parts are then in proper relation, and in readiness for the machine to be set in operation, it being understood thatafter the adjustment of each part, the various bolts and lgibs which lock the same in place are tightened, in the manner hereinbefore described.
, Theoperation of the parts is so timedthat after the machine is set in operation, the movable knife 48 will. first rise and coperate with its die 50 to cut the intermediate portion of the subsequently formed flap. The knife 48 willthen descend and will reach; its lowermost position before the main knife bar 2 has descended a suflicient distance to cause the slotting knives 7 and L8 to operate upon the blank. While theknife 48 is held` in its lowermost position, the'fknife bar 2, in further. descending, will cause the slotting knives 7 and y8 ,to coperatewith their respective dies 1l and 12. to `cut ythe slots in the blank, and atthe same time,the relatively short trimming knives 20k and 21 will coperate with their respective dies 26 and 27 to complete thecut made by theintermediate trimming knife 48` andits die 50. The knife bar 2 will then be raised and the parts will be fin position for a repetitionof the operations just described.
Obviously, numerous modifications andy y changes may be kmade inthe details'ofconstruction, as above described, without departing from the spirit orscope of theinf 2. In a slotting machine for operating upon box blanks, the combination of 'two parallel lslotting knives yfor forming a flap on the blank, and trimming mechanism operating between the slotting knives to reduce the `length of the flap from the base thereof to its outer edge,`said trimming mechanism'being adjustable to produce a Hap of the proper length and permitting adjustment ofthe slotting knives toward and away from each other, for the purpose described.

In a slotting machine for operating upon" ,box blanks, the combination of two yparallel slotting knives for forming a flap onthe blank, and trimming mechanism operating between the slotting knives torerduce the length of the iiap from the base thereof to its outer edge, said trimming mechanism being operativeV to produce a parallel slotting knives, and trimming mechanism to reduce the length of the flap made by said slotting knives, comprising one set of cutting elements adapted ,to cut part way across the fiap, fand a second set of cutting elements adapted to complete the cut across the ap.
' 5. In a slotting machine for operating `upon ,box'blanks, the combination of two parallel slotting knives, and trimmingmechanism yto reduce the length of the flap made Y bysaid slottingknives, comprising one set yof cutting elements arranged at right angles to the slotting knives and adapted toy cut ,part way into the iaip from the slots made by said knives, and a second set of 'cutting elementsadapted to Icomplete the cut across the blank. o
6. In a slotting machine for operating upon box blanks, the combination with two ,parallel slotting knives and their coperating dies, of a trimming knife disposed yadjay, cent the innerA side of each of said knives fand arranged .at right angles thereto, dies toy cooperate withsaid trimming knives, meansto adjust eachslotting knife and its adjacent `trimming knife toward and away from each Vso other, means to adjust the corresponding dies accordingly, and auxiliary trimming "mechanism adapted to complete the cut across the flap when the adjustment of said knives and dies prevents the cut made by the trimming knives from extending completely across the Hap.
7. In a slotting machine for operating upon box blanks, the combination with two parallelYV slotting knives and their cooperating dies, of a trimming knife disposed adjacent the inner side of each of said slotting knives and arranged at right angles thereto, dies'to coperate `with said trimming knives, Vmeans to adjustv Veach slotting knife and its .adjacent trimming knife toward and away from each other, means to adjust the corresponding diesl accordingly, means to adjust the 'trimming knives longitudinally of the slotparallel slotting knives, a trimming knife disposed adjacent tothe inner side of each slotting knife and arranged at Vright angles thereto,` dies to coperate with all of said knives, means to adjust each slotting knife and its trimming knife toward and away from the other slotting and trimming knives, means to adjust the dies accordingly,'and auxiliary trimming mechanism operativeY to complete the cut across the flap made by said trimming knives in various adjustments lof said knives and dies toward and away from each other.
9. In al slotting machine for operating upon boxblanks, the combination'of two parallel slotting knives, a trimming knife disposed adjacent to and arranged at right angles to the inner side of each of said knives,.means to adjust the slotting knives toward and away from each other,-means to adjust the trimming knives longitudinally of the'slotting knives, dies for cooperating with all oflsaid knives, and means to adjustY the Vdies in Yaccordance with the above-named adjustments of the knives. c
