To all whom it may concern i I Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. F ARNS- wonri-r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Handling and Delivering ater, of which the following is 'aspecification. i
My invention relates to an apparatus for handling and delivering water and consists of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawingswhich form a part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective and positive mechanism for automatically collecting, handling and delivering water more or less continuously, and which is adapted not only to automatically deliver the water to a point of use but also provides a means whereby the water supply may be pre-heated during the delivery to and discharge from the compartments of the mechanism.
It has for a further object to provide a construction wherein conditions within one portion of the tank or receptacle forming a part of the mechanism may be automatically balanced with conditions existing at the point of use whereby the delivery of the collected water takes place under the action of gravity.
My invention comprehends features of construction in a device of this form, which are fully described hereinafter and more particularly defined in the claims. These improvements will be better understood by reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an apparatus. for handling and delivering water embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a transverse section on a smaller scale; Fig. 3 represents a plan'of the apparatus with the tank shown in dotted lines and certain adjuncts thereof omitted.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
1 designates a bed or base forsupporting the apparatus, and having thereon suitable pedestals 2 for respectively supporting the different fittings of the steam and vwater pipes which form adjuncts of the apparatus. The pedestals 2' are preferably arranged at opposite sides of the apparatus, one pair being utilized as supports for a pair of threeway fittings 3, the inner sides of which are each provided with trunnion means to support between them a head .4 having a plurality ofchannels 5 and 6. In the present embodiment of the invention, the head 4 has two channels 5 and two channels 6, the same being so connected to the tank 7 as to communicate respectively in pairs with opposite ends of the said tank. In this connection it will be noted that the tank is sub-divided by a partition 8 into two compartments 9 and 10, one of which. here shown as the former, is of greater volume than the chamber 10. Within the compartment 9 there is arranged a heating coil 11 communicating at one end with the compartment, and connected at its opposite end to the head 4 and in vcommunication with the channel 5 for that end of the tank. The opposite compartment 10 also contains a heatingc'oil 12, communicating at one end with the said compartment, and connected at its opposite end to the head 4 so as to communicate with the other channel 5. The discharge channels 6 in the head i have communication with the respective compartments 9 and 10 adjacent thebottom of the tank. It will be understoodthat the tank 7 is fixedly secured to the head 4: and is therefore adapted to swing about the'trunnions as bearings and assume difi'erent-positions,

Adjacent the T-fitting 25 there isa relief valve 27 having communication with the fitting 3 and serving when open to permit the pressure in one of the compartments to be relieved, and whatever steam escapes therethrough passes by way of the check valve 28 and pipe 21.

Therefore the compartment 10 is being filled with water while'the compartment 9 is automatically discharging by gravity, and when the accumulated water in the former is sufficient to overbalance the weight of the parts forming the compartment 9 the tank will auto matically tilt, thusreversing the positions of the respective valves and admitting steam to the compartment 10. The compartment 9 at thesame'time is automatically cut off from steam pressure and is free to fill as previou sl ydescribed for the conn aa'tmlent 10.
It will now be apparent that I havedevised a complete unitary mechanism for handling and'delivering water, wherein it is possible to supply water of condensation or 1 pre-heated feed water to a point of use, such as, a boiler or the like, and whereina certain quantity or portion of the water is main tained in contact with heating coils a sufli- 'cient length of time to give the required pre-heating temperature. It will be noted that the entire device is of a compact nature embodying few parts, all of which may be readily assembled by unskilled labor and erected upon a boiler or in an engine room adjacent the point of use. 7
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred ei'nbodiment thereof which ,has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that I do not restrict myself to the details,
as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent is 1.. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a tank divided into two separate compartments, water supply and delivery pipes, a steam supply pipe, independent means forming communication between the two compartments and the respective water and steam pipes, a valve con trolling each steam communicating means, and means controlled by the volume of water in said compartments for alternately operating said valves to cause said compartments to discharge their contents alternately.
2. In a device of the character stated, the
coml'iination of a tank having a partition di riding said tank into two separate compartments one having a greater volume than the other, means adjacent said partition for supporting said tank for tilting movement, a water supply pipe, at delivery pipe, a steam supply pipe, independent means forming a communication respectively between said water and steam pipesand each of said-compartments, a separate valve controlling each steam communicating means, and means controlled by the movement of said tank when an excess weight in one of said compartments causes it to oscillate for alternately operating said steam valves to cause said compartments to discharge the contents alternately.
3. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a tank mounted for tilting movement and divided into two separate compartments one compartment having a greater volume than the other, water supply and deliverypipes, separate flexible means forming communication between said pipes and each compartment, check valves operatively arranged in said water pipes adjacent the connection of said flexible means for preventing back flow into the supply pipe, a steam pipe, separate flexible means forming communication between said steam pipe and each of said compartments, a valve controlling the admission of steam to each flexible means, a relief valve adjacent each controlling valve, and means operable by the movement of said tank for alternately opening said steam controlling valves and sin'iultaneously closing the adjacent relief valve and vice versa, whereby said tank normally discharges its contents from the two compartments alternately.
4- In a device oi the character stated, the combination of a tank mounted for tilting movement and divided into two separate compartments one compartment having a greater volume than the other, a water supply pipe, a delivery pipe, separate flexible means forming communication between said pipes and each compartment, check valves operatively arranged in said water supply and delivery pipes ad acent the connection ofeach oi said flexible means to prevent back flow, a steam pipe, aheating coil lo-- r cated in each compartment and having free communication therewith at one end, separate flexible means forming a communication between each coil and said steam pipe, aseparate valvecontrolling the admission of steam to each flexible means, a separate relief valve adjacent each controlling valve, and means operable by the movement of said tank for alternately-opening said controlling valves and simultaneously alternately closing the adjacent relief valve and vice versa whereby said tank normally dischargesits contents from the two compartments alternately.

separate valve controlling the admission of steam to each flexible means, a separate relief valve adjacent'each controlling valve, means operable by the movement of said tank for alternately opening said controlling valves and simultaneously alternately closing the adjacent relief valve and vice versa whereby said tank discharges its contents 'from'the two compartments alternately, a
return pipe forming a communication between the outlets of Stld relief valves and said waterrsupply pipe, and a check valve in I said return pipe.

9. In a device of the character stated, a
tank mounted for-tilting movement and 'di vided into two separate compartments positioned relatively to the pivotal point whereby the contents of one of the compartments will always have capacity to overbalance'the contents of the other compartment, in combination with a water supply pipe communieating with each of the compartments and having check valves to prevent back flow, means for permitting delivery of water or fluid from each of the compartments and provided with means for preventing back flow, a steam supply pipe having communication with each or the compartments, separate valves for controlling the supply of steam to the respective compartments, means under the control of the tilting of the tank whereby steam is supplied to the two compartments alternately, automatic relief devices for permitting the escape of the steam fromthe compartments alternately whereby the uncondensed steam within the-compartments after delivery of water or fluid therefrom may be exhausted from the said compartment to permit inflow of additional water orfluid thereto, and connections between the relief devices and the water supply pipe whereby said exhaust steam may be ered to the inflowing water to heat the same.
10. In a device of the character stated, a tank mounted for tilting movement and divided into two separate compartments delivpositioned relatively to the pivoted point, .7
whereby the contents of one of the com partments will always have capacity tooverbalance the contents of the other compartment, in combination with a water supply pipe communicating with each of the com partments andhaving check valves to-pre vent back flow, means for permitting delivery of water or fluid from'each of the compartments and provided with means for preventing back flow, a steam supply pipe,
having communication with each I of the compartments, separate valves for controlling the supply of steam to the respective compartments, means under the control of the tilting of the tank whereby steam is supplied to the two compartments alternately, heating coils within the respective compartments through which the steam is caused to pass before escaping thereinto for heating the water or fluid contained within the com partments, and automatic relief devices for permitting the escape of the steam from the compartments alternately whereby the unconclensed steam within the compartments after delivery of water or fluid therefrom may be exhausted from the said compartment to permit inflow of additional water or fluid thereto.
11. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a two compartment tank pivoted to tilt, a common fluid supply pipe for both compartments, a common discharge pipe for both compartments, a pressure pipe for both compartments for vapor or gaseous fluid such as air, a separate valve for each compartment for intermittently supplying pressure or gaseous fluid from the pressure pipe to the compartments alternately, relief devices for relieving the compartments from pressure alternately, means connecting with the tank for operating the valves, and check valves between the discharge pipe and the respective compartments.
12. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a tilting chambered casing, a pivotal support for the casing, tubular passages attached to and moving with the tilting chambered casing and arranged close to the axis thereof, stationary supply and discharge pipes for supplying water and.
steam tosaid tilting chambered casing, suitable valve devices for controlling the supply of steam and water to and from the tilting chambered casing, and a plurality of substantially parallel flexible pipes respectively connecting the stationary water and steam pipes with the respective tubular passages of the tilting chambered casing, said flexible pipes being arranged near and substantially parallel to the axis of oscillation of the said casing.
13. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a tilting chambered casing, a pivotal support for the casing, tubular passages attached to and moving with the tilting chambered casing and arranged close to the axis thereof, stationary supply and discharge pipes for supplying water and steam to said tilting chambered casing, suit-- able valve devices for controlling the steam and water passing through said pipes, a plurality of substantially parallel flexible pipes connecting the stationary water pipe with part of the tubular passages of the tilting chambered casing, and a plurality of substantially parallel flexible pipes connecting the stationary steam pipe with others of the tubular passages of the tilting chambered casing, said flexible pipes being arranged near and substantially parallel to the axis of oscillation of said casing.
