Description

R. HOFFMAN.
BLUE FLAME OIL BURNER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 26. |915.
1,1 92,1 99., 1 Patented July 1916.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, OF CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SEARS, ROEBUCK AND COMPANY, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OE NEW YORK.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOFFMAN',
a' citizen of theUnited States, residing at A right perforated combustion tubes are employed to produce a blue flame. Thetubes are rigidly secured together and rest loosely upon a burner vbowl containing a suitable wick. Surrounding the perforated tubes is a drum or chimney. When'the burner is to be lighted the combustion tubes and the drum must be tilted to permit access to the` wick. To support the drum and to permit of tilting the perforated tubes and the drum as a unit, it is'necessary that there be some connection between the'combustion tubes and the drum. It is, however, desirable that the drum be readily removable from the combustion tubes for convenience in cleaningor in replacing any of the parts.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means whereby the combustion tubes and the drum may be tilted as a unit although permitting the drum to be freely and easily withdrawn when desired.
.In the, accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical centralsectional view through a burner embodying the features of my invention. Fig.2 is a top plan view.
In the drawingsl and 2 indicate the inner` and outer perforated combustion tubes. Said tubes may be of any preferred construction and may be rigidly secured together in any ordinary or desired manner. Herein I have shown two pins 3 extending through both of the combustion tubes at right angles to each other, said'pins serving to fasten` the tubes rigidly together. The combustion tubes 1 and 2 are adapted to be supported upon a burner bowl 4 which may be of any suitable construction. 'indicates the wick. l The drum or chimney 6 may be 0f any desiredy form. Herein it is shown as being of Specification of Letters Patent.

generally frusto-conical shape, its lower larger end being provided with an annular inwardly-extending ange 7. The drum 6 is supported concentrically with the tubes 1 and 2 by means of a plurality of brackets 8 fixed to the outer tube 2 and projecting outwardly therefrom to engage in an annulargroove 9 in the drum. In the present instance three of these brackets are provided and are spaced equi-distant around the tube 2, each bracket comprising a piece of sheet metal bent into U-form and having its ends fixed to the outer side of the tube 2, the apex of the bend engaging in the groove 9. When it is desired to disassociate the drum fromY thetubes, the drum is forced upwardly out of engagement with the brackets 8, the parts yielding to permit the apex of each bracket to be disengaged from the groove 9.
10. is a handle secured to the outer side of the drum and providing means for tilting the drumand the tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1, so as to give access to the wick for lighting the same.
I claim as my invention: l
An oil burner having, in combination, an inner and an outer combustion tube rigidly secured together, a drum surrounding said tubes and having an interior annular groove, and a plurality of brackets spaced around Y the periphery of the outer tube, each bracket formed of a strap member comprising a U- shaped body portion and end portions bent at an angle to the U-shaped body portion and rigidly xed in a vertical position to the outer side of the outer tube between the ends thereof, the middle body portion of each bracket being arranged toA project from the side of the outer tube and to frictionally engage in said groove in the drum, the engagement of said brackets and groove being capable of being broken by forcing the drum upwardly, whereby the latter may be disassociated from the combust-iontubes. Q
' In testimony whereof, I hereunto: set my hand in the presence of two'witnesses.
' RUDOLPH HOFFMAN.
In the presence of- FRED LUNDsIA,
E. H. SIEKMANN.
