Wain 661-166 @[JWM s'rAT s PATENT oniuo v THEODORE A. WILLABD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WILLAItD STORAGE BATTERY COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO I CONNECTOR FOR STORAGE BATTERIES.
Patented Jul is, 1916.
Application filed May 12, 1915. Serial No. 27,482.
Toall whom it may concern I Be it known that I, THEODORE A. W11
. inn, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of'Ohio, have invented a certain new and-useful Improvement in Connectors for Storage Batteries, of which the following 1s ing around or on the exterior of the socketed part a reinforcing member, and preferably this reinforcing member is formed asa part of a clamping nut or screw adapted to be drawn tightly onto the exterior of the socketed part of the connector, so that when the nut or screw is tightened to draw the tapered terminal tightly into the socket the outward spreading action is overcome by the inward compressing action of the nut or screw.
My invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts which will be described in the specification and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a terminal connector, partsbeing in section; Fig. 3 and 4 are views similar to modifications.
The connector for the storage battery here shown is known as a terminal connector, two of which are adapted to be connected to two of the-upstanding posts of the storage battery for the purpose of connecting to the battery the positive and negative flexible leads or conductors. This connector, which Is formed of lead, includes a portion 10 having a ver- Fig. 1, showing tical socket 11 which is preferably composed of upper and lower parts tapered in opposite directions, as shown, the lower tapered part of socket 11 be ng adapted to recelve the upper tapered part of a terminal post of the battery and the upper part of the socket being adapted to receive melted lead when the connector and post are lead-burned I together.
At the side of the socketed part 10 a and its principal object is 2 is a side view of the same; Figs lug or boss 12 tapered on the exterior, as shown, and provlded also with a tapered socket 13, which receives a correspondingly tapered terminal or terminal member 14 v minal 14. In the construction shown in Fig.
1 the terminal is provided with a threaded shank '16 extending outwardly from theend of the terminal beyond the socketed part 12 and the terminal is drawn into tight engagement with the inner wall of the socket 13 by a nut 17 composed of a lead body 17 provided with a brass or other hard metal insert 17", having a threaded hub or central part which is screwed onto the threads of the shank 16,-this' nut being provided with a flange 17 tapered on the interior and adapted to be forced down onto the exterior of the tapered part 1 2, so that as the terminal is drawn tlghtly 1n the tapered socket the socketed part is compressed inwardly. coun teracting the outward spreading action of the terminal.
In Fig. 3 the terminal 14 is provided with a threaded socket, and. the terminal is adapted to be drawn into the socketed part 12 by a screw having athreaded shank 18 and a head'19 formed with an inturned' flange 19,
the end part of the screw including the flange being lead covered, the flanged part being internally tapered so as to have a clamping action on the exterior of the socketed member or part 12 as the terminal is drawn into the interior tapered socket 13.
, In Fig. 4 the terminal 14 is provided with a stud 21 which is screwed into a threaded socket of the terminal, this stud being threaded on both ends and receiving a nut 22 similar in every way to thenut 17 of Fig. 1, and provided with the tapered flanged part which clamps down onto the exterior of the tapered socket member 12 when the terminal 14 is drawn into the tapered socket.
In each of the three constructionsthe exterior reinforcing or inward clamping action to counteract the outward spreading of the tapered'terminal is precisely the, same.
This nut or screw, as the case may be, can
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A connector for a storage battery having a part provided with a tapered socket, a tapered terminal member fitting into this socket, and means surrounding and engaging the outer surface of the socketed part to overcome the spreading action of the terminal member. I
2. A connector for a storage battery, a portion having a tapered socket, a tapered terminal member fitted into the socket, means for drawing said terminal member into the socket and against the tapered Wall thereof, said means having a part surrounding the tapered socket and serving to overcome the spreading action of the tapered terminal in the socket.
3. A connector for a storage battery comthe tapered wall of the socket, said clamp ing means having a portion surrounding the socketed part and exerting an inward pressure on the same when the terminal is drawn into place.
4. A connector for a storage battery comprising a part tapered externally and provided with a tapered socket, a tapered terminal fitted into the socket, means for drawing the terminal into the socket and for counteracting the spreading action thereof,
comprising a member havlng a threaded connection wlth the terminal member having a tapered part which fits tightly onto the outer tapered socketed part.
' In testimony whereof, I hereuntoaflix my signature in the resence of two witnesses.
THE DORE A. WILLARD. Witnesses:
A. J. Henson, L. I. PORTER.
