for rotating'the drill or anger at various angular positions thereof, the device being in the form of an attachment for a mining machine, although it may be'applied to various drilling machines for the same purpose.
The invention embodies unique means for mounting the screw shank of the drill or anger, whereby the drill may be swung upwardly and downwardly as well as sidewise so that the drill may enter the coal or other object at any angle desired, and the mechanism further includes a flexible connection between a driving element and a sleeve feathered upon said shank whereby the shank is rotated properly.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a mechanism of the nature indicated, having a connection between the driving element and sleeve provided with novel means for making and breaking the connection between the driving element and sleeve, whereby slippage is provided should the drill strike a rock or unyielding or hard object.
The invention also includes improved details of construction, which enhance the utility and efficiency of the mechanism.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it i being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figs. 3

these views being on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is an enlarged bottom view of the base plate of the attachment.
The attachment embodies a suitable base plate 1, preferably of rectangular contour, and the bottom of the base plate 1 carries means for attaching it to the frame of the mining machine or other support. Thus, two pairs of depending-threaded bearings 52 are secured tothe lower surface of the plate 1 adjacent the opposite ends of the plate, and jamb screws 3 are threaded through the bearings 2 in directions away from one another. The plate 1 has openings 3? above the adjacent ends or heads of the screws 3 whereby said screws maybe rotated from above. When the plate 1 is applied upon the frame of the miningmachine, or the like, the set screws 3 are adapted to drop into an opening or hole in the frame or support, and by threading the screws 3 outwardly from one another, they are arranged to engage the frame or support to hold the base plate 1 in place. The plate 1 is also preferably provided with apertures 4 through which screws or other securing elements may be passed to engage the frame or support for assisting in firmly holding the base plate in place.
An upright or vertical shaft 5 is journaled through the base plate 1 between its ends, a hanger 6 being secured to the bot tom of the base plate and the lower end of said shaft being journaled through the lower portion of said hanger, whereby the v shaft is steadied. This hanger 6 also serves as a housing for a gear wheel 7 keyed upon the shaft 5 below the base plate, said gear wheel 7 being adapted to intermesh with one ofthe gear wheels of themining machine whereby the shaft 5 will be rotated when the machine is in operation, although it is to be understood that the shaft 5 may be r0 tated in any suitable manner.
A plate or arm 8 rests upon the base plate 1 and is pivotally engaged at one end to the shaft 5 whereby the arm 8 is swingably mounted upon the base plate to swing or oscillate about the axis of the driving shaft upon the base plate, when it is desired to hold the arm 8 at any adjusted position to which it is set.
The arm or plate 8 carries the base plate 11 of a train of gears, said base plate 11 having that end thereof, which is adjacent the free end of the arm 8, received by a transverse keeper 12 secured upon the arm 8, by means of screws or securing elements 13, adjacent the free end of said arm. The plate 11 is secured upon the arm 8 by means of suitable securing elements 14:, which when removed allow the plate '11 to be removed. from under the keeper l2 and oil of the arm 8.
The plate 11 has a Ushaped standard or bracket 15 secured thereon and disposed transversely of the arm 8, and a guide sleeve '16 for the screw shank 17 of the drill or auger 18 is trunnioned or pivoted within the standard 15 to swing vertically about a transverse horizontal axis. The shank 17 is threaded through the sleeve 16, and the sleeve 16 being pivotally mounted enables the shank 17 to be swung in a vertical plane for raising and lowering the drill 18. A second U-shaped standard or bracket 19 is carried by the plate 11 at one side of the standard 15, and ashort counter shaft 19 is journaled through the arms of the standard 19" coaxial with the trunnions of the sleeve 16. A relatively large rotatable spur gear 20 is carried by the shaft 19 within the standard 19*, and carries a bevel gear 20 of smaller diameter, and a pair of oscillating arms or links 21 are pivotally engaged to the shaft 19, and have a transverse shaft 21 engaged or journaled through their free ends. A relatively small spur gear 22 is keyed upon the shaft 21. between the arms or links 21 and intermeshes with the spur gear 20. A bevel gear 23 is secured upon one end of the shaft 21 and intermeshes with a bevel gear 24 carried by a sleeve 25 feathered upon the screw shank 17 and resting against the sleeve 16. The gear 2 1 is disposed between the sleeve 16 and gear 23 to be held in place against said sleeve. The shafts 19 and 21 are disposed transversely ofthe arm 8 and plate 11.
The bevel gear 20 meshes with a smaller bevel gear 26 secured upon one end of a longitudinal shaft 27 journaled through a bracket 29 attached to the inner arm of the standard 15 and through a bearing 28 secured upon the plate 11. A spur gear 30 is secured upon the shaft 27 between the bracket 29 and bearing 28 and meshes with a lower spur gear 31 secured upon the intermediate portion of a lower longitudinal shaft 32 journaled through the bearing 28 and the bearing 33 secured upon the plate 11 below the bracket 29. A relatively small bevel gear 3-1 is secured upon that end of the shaft 32 nearest the upright shaft 5, and
meshes with a horizontally rotating relatively large bevel-gear 35.
The bevel gear 35 is mounted upon or sun rounds the shaft 5 above the arm 8 and base plate 1, and is provided with a lower frusto conical socket 36 receiving a frusto-conical clutch member 37 keyed or ecured upon the shaft 5 and seating upon the arm 8. The gear 35 also has an upper or opposite frustoconical socket 38 for receiving a frusto-conical clutch member 39 carried by a sleeve 10 threaded upon the upper protruding terminal of the shaft 5. The arrangement of the parts are such, that when the shaft 5 is rotated, the sleeve -10 being held. by the hand, or by a pair of pincers, or the like, will screw downwardly along the shaft 5, and this will cause the gear to be clamped between the clutch members 37 and 39 so that said gear will rotate with the shaft 5. When the sleeve 10 is screwed upwardly, the gear is re leased, and the shaft 5 will then turn without rotating the gear 35. The gear 35 having the opposite sockets 36 and 38 for re ceiving the opposite clutch members 37 and 39 provides an effective means for connecting and disconnecting the gear with the shaft 5. By this means, the connection between the driving shaft 5 and sleeve 25 may be made and broken at will. The sleeve 16 has a bracket 11 provided with a collar embracing the shaft 21, so that the shaft 21 will move with the screw 17.
In operation, when the shaft 5 is rotated, the sleeve 25 may be operatively connected therewith, by holding the sleeve 40 until the gear 35 is gripped by the two clutch members 37 and 39, so that the gear 35 rotates with the shaft 5. The gear 35 will then rotate the shaft 32 by means of the gear 31-, and the gear 31 of the shaft 32 will rotate the gear 30 carried by the shaft 27 so that the gear 26 will rotate the gears 20 and 20. The gear 20 rotates the gear 22 and its shaft 21, so that the gear 23 will rotate the gear 21 carried by the sleeve 25. The shank 17 will thus be rotated with the sleeve 25 for rotating the drill or auger 18, and the shank 17 in being threaded within the sleeve 16 will be fed forwardly slowly during the rotation of the drill. Should the drill strike a hard object into which the drill cannot work, the gear 35 can slip between the clutch members 37 and 39 to avoid the breakage of the mechanism. The gear 35 may be loosened by unscrewing the sleeve 40 whereby the clutch is opened and the connection between the shaft 5 and sleeve 25 broken. When the set screws 10 are loosened, the arm 8 may be swung in a horizontal plane for adjusting the drill 18 sidewise, a vertical adjustment of the drill being allowed due to the fact that the sleeve 16 which carries the shank 17 may be swung vertically about a horizontal axis. The drill 18 may thus be swung at various desirable angles to drill the holes or bores in the directions desired. The operative connection between the shaft 5 and sleeve 25 is flexible, since when the arm 8 is swung upon the base 3, the gear 2% may travel around the gear 35 without interference, and when the sleeve 16 is swung, the gear 23 will move with the gear 24, and the arms 21 will swing upon the shaft 19 so that the gear 29. moves around the gear 20 with.- out breaking the connection between said gears.
The various parts of the mechanism may be readily assembled, and the attachment may be quickly applied to and removed from a mining machine or other equivalent structure.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a mechanism of the character described, a base plate, a shaft journaled therethrough, an arm pivotally engaged to said shaft and adapted to be swung at various angles relative to the base plate, a pair of friction .clutch members carried by said shaft, one of the clutch members being IIIOV? able upon the shaft, a gear disposed between the clutch members to be gripped thereby, a rotatable shank carried by said arm, and an operative connection carried by said arm between said shank and gear.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, a base plate, a shaft journaled therethrough, an arm pivotally engaged to said shaft upon said base plate, a friction clutch member secured to the shaft and bearing against said arm, a second friction clutch member threaded upon the shaft, a gear disposed between said clutch members to be gripped thereby, a rotatable shank ,carried by said arm, and an operative connection between said shank and gear carried by said arm.
3. In a mechanism of the character de scribed, a base plate, a shaft journaled therethrough, an arm pivotally engaged to said shaft to swing relative to the base plate, a pair of clutch members carried by said shaft, one of said clutch members being movable upon the shaft, a gear disposed between said clutch members to be gripped thereby, standards carried by the arm, a sleeve trunnioned to one standard, a shaft journaled to the other standard coaxial with the trunnion of said sleeve, a link engaged to the second mentioned shaft, a shaft journaled through the free end of the link, meshing gears carried by the second and third mentioned shafts, a bevel gear carried by the third mentioned shaft, a shankextending through the first mentioned sleeve, a sleeve feathered upon the shank and bearing against the first mentioned sleeve, the second mentioned sleeve having a bevel gear meshing with the aforesaid bevel gear, and an operative connection between the first mentioned gear and second mentioned shaft.

In a mechanism of the character described, a base plate, a driving shaft journaled therethrough, an arm pivotally engaged to said shaft to swing upon the base plate, a' clutch member secured to said shaft and bearing against said arm, a second clutch member threaded upon said shaft, a gear disposed between said clutch members to be gripped thereby, standards carried by said arm, a sleeve trunnioned to one standard, a drill shank threaded through said sleeve, a second shaft journaled to'the other standard coaxial with the trunnion of said sleeve, alink engaged to said second shaft, a third shaft journaled through the free end of the link, meshing gears carried by the second and third shafts, a bevel gear carried by the third shaft, a sleeve feathered upon said shank and bearing against the first mentioned sleeve, the second mentioned sleeve having a bevel gear meshing with the aforesaid bevel gear, and gears carried by said arm operatively connecting the second shaft and first mentioned gear.
