FRANCIS J. COLE AND BRAKE F. SCOVILLE,
Application filed ma 5, 1916. Serial No. 95,522.
Be it'known, that We, Francis J. Conn and FR1\I\'K'F.-SCOVILLE, both of Schcnectady, in the county ofSchenectady and State ofNew York, ha e jointly invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive Trailing Trucks, of which improvement the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to trailing trucks for locomotive engines, of the hinged floating yoke type, instances of which are exemplified in Letters Patent of the United States Nos. 936,413 and 991.139,- granted and issued to us under dates of October 12, 1909 and May 2, 1911, respectively.
The object of our present invention is to provide, in a trailing truck of the type remeans for connecting, the friction plates with the floating yokes. V The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth. i
In the construction of Patent No. 936,413
*- aforesaid, the connection between the yoke,
the spring seat, and the friction plates was eii'ected'through toggle joints, and in that of Patent No. 991,139, through spherical bearings. In each], of these designs, triction platesare providedbelow and above the toggles or sphericalbearings, so that the carrying springs were raised so high that it was often found difficult to obtain the necessary clearance between their ends and the Y firebox foundation ring. Under our present invention, the yokes arc.disposed entirely outside the springs, and connected thereto by hinged joints, cylindrical bearings being interposed between the spring seats and friction plates. It is thereby made practicable to efilect a considerabie reduction in ,the
heights of the springs, by. the resultant reduction of distance between the tops of the journal boxes and the spring bands. fiThe hinged connections of the spring seats and yokes provide for the rise. and fall of the locomotive transversely, and the cylindrical hearings on the bottoms of the spring seats and corresponding recesses in the friction plates, accommodate longitudinal angularity, so that the frict on plates, at all tunes, bear fully and solidly on the tops of the journal boxes. ' In general construction, and except as to the novel features constituting our present invention, our improved trailing truck" accords, in all substantial particulars, with those set forth in Letters Patent Nos. 936,413 and 991,139 aforesaid, and therefore said novel features only'will be herein fully and at length described.
In the practice of our invention, referring descriptively to Y the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, the truck axle, 3 ,upon which the-truck Wheels, 3, are secured, is, as in Letters Patent Nos. 936,413-and 991,139, provided with. journals, which rotate in bearings fitted in journal boxes, 69, in the usual manner, said journal boxes being fixed in the side frame vmen'il'iers, (S5, of the truck. T he rear frame 'bands and journal boxes. By the application of said means, the operative results of universal adjustment of the springs and journal boxes which are attained by the constructions set forth in Patent Nos. 936,413 and 991,139, are, under our present invention, provided, with the further advantages of a reduction in the height of the springs and a more desirable system of connection;
Floating yokes, 50, extend longitudinally below the springs, 42, and are coupled, at their ends, tothe rear main frame members, 8 Intermediate of their ends, they are coupled by universal joint connections, embodying our present invention, to Y the springs, 42, and journal boxes, 69. The yokes, 50, are loccted entirely outside the springs, instead of below them as in Pats trailing truck illustrating an embodiment of i outside ents Nos; 936,413 and 991,139, andthe spring bands, 42, are supported on spring seats, 42, having eyes on their outer sides to-receive longitudinally extending horizontal bolts, 51, bywhich they are hinged to the yokes. The, bottoms of the spring seats,-
ment in a longitudinal vertical plane.
-Movement in a transverse plane is provided for by the support of the friction plates, 81, on the tops ofthe journal boxes.
Oil cups, 42 are fixed to the tops of the "floating yokes, adjacent to the spring seats,
' and oil passages, 42, extend therefrom to the faces of thecurved bearings, 42*, of the spring seats.
I secure by Letters Patent:
We claim as our invention and desire to 1. In a-locomotive engine, the combination Ofamain frame; a radial truck pivoted thereto; springs through Which weight home by the main frame is transmitted to 3 the journal boxes of the truck; floating yokes pivotedat the ends to the main frame and extending intermediately on the outer sides of the springs; and spring seats hinged to the floating .yokes and] interposed I between the springs and'the truck journal boxes.
2. In 'a locomotiveengin'e, the combination of a main frame; a radial truck pivoted thereto; springs through which Weight borne by the'main frame is transmitted to the" journal boxes of the truck; floating yokes pivoted at their ends. to the main frame and extending intermediately on the outer sides of the springs; spring seats hinged to the floating yokes'; and segmental hearings on said seats through which they are supported on the truck journal boxes.
3; In a locomotive engine, thecombination' of a main frame; a radial truck pivoted thereto; springs through which weight borne by.the main frame is transmitted to the journal boxes of the truck; floating yokes pivoted at their ends to the main frame and extending intermediately on the outer sides 1 of the springs; friction plates resting on the truck journalboxes; spring seats hinged to the floating yokes; and segmental bearings on said seats fitting corresponding recess in the friction plates. 4
4. In a locomotive engine, the combination of a main frame; a radial truck pivotedthereto; springs through which weight borne by the main frame is transmitted to the journal boxes of the truck; floating yokes pivoted at their ends to the main frame and extending intermediately on the outer sides of the springsgspring seats on Which the bands of the springs are supported and having eyes on their Oll'tGfSldGS; hinge'bolts passing through said eyes and coupling the spring seats tofthe yokes; and segmental hearings on the' spring seats, which are curved in planes parallel with the hinge bolts and through which .said seats are supported on the truck journal boxes.
5. A spring seat for radial trucks of locomotive engines having a'recess in its top adapted to receive a spring band and a longitudinally extending hinge bolt eye, and having a segmental bearing onits bottom which is curved in a planeparallel with the axis of the hinge bolt eye.
