To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLORENCE HEIN Bis-v ci-iorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of "New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paringl Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of household articles. Y
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a paring apparatus'designed to be employed` for accomplishing with facility the work of removing the rind as well as slicing in ribbon-like strips certain classes of fruits and vegetables, in. order to overcome the objections attendant to the use of a sharp instrument such as a knife when manipulated in the usual way by hand. This is attained mainly by providing a frame having adjustably mounted thereon a rotatable carrier element to which the article to be pared is removably applied for being revolved in the path of movement of a yieldingly held adjustable cutting blade which is caused to be guided in the radius of a circle to suitable positions of contact with the article.
Other objects ofthe invention are to provide means for rotating the carrier element; to provide a yielding stop to permit the'carrier element to be adjusted in the frame whereby articles of various sizes may be suitably positioned relatively to the center of the radial positions of thel cutting blade; to provide the cutting blade with a spring controlled presser element, or bar whereby the blade may be yieldingly forced into contact with thearticle being pared; to provide the presser element with a bracket member pivoted to the frame so that the presser element and the blade may be swung to various circumferential positions; and to provide means to allow the swinging bracket member to be manually adjusted as required during the operation ofthe apparatus. f j j A further object of the linvention isto provide a paring apparatus of simple-and efficient construction, and which is susceptible of being made in y different sizes so as to combine greatdurability. f
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularlyk described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a `part of this speciiication in which similar characterscof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

tion of one form of paring apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, partly in detail, taken on the line 111-111 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of the cutting blade and its supporting bracket used in the apparatus, and Fig. 5 is a section, partly in detail, taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1.
The paring apparatusV has a frame 10 supported upon a base, as 11, which may be mounted on any suitable support, as 12, and this support may be held by means of a clamp 13, or otherwise. The frame 10 is formed in substantially an L-shape with a vertically disposed post 14, and a bar 15 extending from the lower end of the post. On the upper end of the post 14 is an apertured cross-head or bearing 16, the passage 17 therethrough being longitudinally disposed similarly to the bar 15. On top of the head 16 at one ,of its ends is a boss 18 in which is a threaded recess, and in proximity to the other end of the head is a second boss l19 having a vertically disposed passage v19a leading therethrough and through the head to communicate with its passage 17.
In order to permit an article, such as an L apple, or other fruit, or vegetable, as 20, to be removably mounted on the apparatus so as to be pared, vor sliced into ribbon-like strips, a` revoluble carrier element, as 21, is provided. The carrier element 21 has a rodk or shaft 22 which is revolubly disposed through the longitudinal passage 17 ofthe cross-head 16, and this shaft is of a.V length so that its ends extend some distance beyond the ends ofthe cross-head. On one end of the shaft 22 isa fork, as 23, extendingin spaced relation longitudinally above the bar 15 of the frame 10. On the other end of the shaft 22 is a crank handle 24 by which the shaft, the fork 28, and the article 20 is manually revolved, though in instances this crank handle may bey dispensedcwith, and instead thereof other suitable power propelling means may be employed for driving the carrier element. j j
At spaced intervals in the central part of the shaft 22 are a number of grooves25, 25a,
also leading tered with the passage in the boss 19of the cross-head of the frame of the apparatus, and to permit the carrier element 21 to be `adjusted' in the cross-head whereby articles `of various sizes may be properly positioned for being pared, or sliced, a yielding stop, as 26, is provided. The stop 26 has a spring 27 preferably in the form of a strip of metal having one of its ends secured t0 the boss 18 of the cross-head 16 by a screw passed thro-ugh an opening in the spring and into the threaded recess of this boss. The spring l27 is of a length so that its other end is disposed over the top of the second boss 19 Y of the cross-head 16, and in the passage of the second boss 19 is movably disposed a pin 28. The upper end of the pin 28 is in normal contact/withthe spring 27 so t-hat the tension of the spring will serve toy force the pinv inwardly of the cross-head 16. lThe vlower end of the piny is' rounded and seated in one of the grooves 25, 25a, 25b of the shaft 22 of the carrier element. The carrier element 21 is adapted to be adjusted-in the cross-head sov that the axialV center of the article being pared will be preferably on a vertical line with respect to the'free end of the longitudinal bar 15 ofthe L-shaped frame of the apparatus. To accomplish this adjustment the shaft 22 of the carrierelement is moved accordingly Vbackivardly or forwardly in' the'crossshead 16 of the frame for allowing the spring actuated pin 28 to engage the proper one of the grooves 25, 25a, 2 5br ofthis shaft, the rounded lower end Vof the pin 28 permitting the shaft when moved by the exertion of slight force to be disengaged from its groove for being yieldingly seated in one of the other grooves when the shaft is properly adjusted, and the carrier element will then be yieldingly held against accidental movement. In this manner articles of various sizes may beV im'- paled on the forks 23 vof the carrier ele ment andl suitably positioned for being pared, or sliced, as will be hereinaftermore fully explained. Y
For thepurpose of convenientlyv paring or slicing anarticle, such as fruit or vegetables of certain classes, I provide a form of cutting blade,ras4 29, which is'caused to be guidedin the radius of a circle to suitable circumferential positions of contact with the article, and this blade is adjustably mountedfon` a spring Vcontrolled presser element,forvbar, as 30. The blade 29 is rigidly vheld between the arms of a substantially AU-shaped bracket 31, and this blade 1s disposed on an incline, as shown, so that itsk cutting edge is spaced from the bottom of the bracket to provide a passage, as 32,
vbetween the blade and the'bracket. YThe bracket31 is pivoted, atj33, by means of a Vdownwardly extending pin which isv freelyV movable in asleeve provided on one end of bracket and the cutting blade will be revolublyk movable. The presser bar 30 is preferably curved slightly, and the opposite end of the bar is pivoted by a pin 34C rotatably disposed through a sleevef35 provided on the upperend of the vertical arm 36 of an L-shaped bracket member 37. The longitudinal arm-38 of the bracket member 37 is disposed toward the free end of the bar15 of the frame of the apparatus. "To the sleeve 35 of thearm 36 of the bracket is held v'one end of a spiral spring 39 which encircles the sleeve. The other end portion of the spring 39 extends under the presser bar 30, and this end of the spring is held to the presser bar by a pin 39a in proximity to the .cuttingblade 29. The tension fof the spring normally serves jto yieldingly force the presser-bar and the cutting blade toward the fork 23 of the carrier element 21.

Obviously the tension of the spring 39 of the presser bar 30 not only serves to guide this bar whereby the cutting blade will be held in contact with the article, but also tends to yieldingly force the presser bar so that the movement of the bladel Will conform to irregularities in the surface of the article when these parts are properly directed by the manipulation of the handle 40.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of myinvention, but I do not wish to bel understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware thatmodiications may be made therein Without del parting from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new4 and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In a paring apparatus, in combination, a frame with a bracket manually movable in the radiusof a circle, a spring actuated in the radius of a circle, a spring actuated arm pivoted to the bracket, and carrying a cutting blade, a rod with means to hold an article to be pared, and having spaced annular grooves in its periphery, the said rod being manually rotatable in the frame as Well as being adjustable in directions to and from the path of movement ofV the blade, and spring actuated means on the frame for engaging the rod to releasably hold the rod when in adjusted positions.

In a paring apparatus, the combina-l tion with aframe including a blade manually movable in the radius of a circle, of a sleeve on the frame, a rod with means to hold an article to be pared, said rod being manually rotatable in the sleeve as Well as being adjustable in directions t0 and from the path of movement of the blade, and a catch on the frame for engaging the rod to releasably hold the rod when in adjusted positions.

In a paring apparatus, the combination with a frame including a blade manually movable in the radius of a circle, of a sleeve on the frame, a rod with means to hold an article to be pared, and having i spaced annular grooves in its periphery, the said rod being manually rotatable in the sleeve as Well as being adjustable in directions to and from the path of movement of the blade, and spring actuated means on the frame for engaging the rod to releasably hold the rod when in adjusted positions.
