Pivotally mounted on diametrically opposite flattened portions of the movable clutch member 27 (see Fig. 5) are a pair of members 29 comprising teeth 30 adapted to extend beyond one face of the cylindrical portion of member 27 in the path of the teeth 26 and also provided with upturned beyond the opposite face of the cylindrical portion 27 in position to contact with stop members 32, hereinafter to be referred to. The normal position of the pivoted members 29 is maintained by means of pins 32. and springs 33 clearly shown in Figs. 4 and Adjacent to the movable clutch member 27 is a cylindrical block 34 supported at its center on the shaft 16 and having feathered key connection at its circumference with the fixed cylindrical casing 2. The tubular. extension 28 of the movable clutch member 27 is proided with a pair of exterior helical ribs 28* and the adjacent face of the block 34 is formed with a correspondingly shaped recess having interior helical grooves in which the ribs 28 are adapted to engage. The block 34 is provided at one side with a cupshaped flange 35 and at its other side with an annular flange 36 and recess 37. The stop pins 32' project from one side of the block 34 in position to he engaged by the tail pieces 31 of the members 29 on movable clutch 27.
A tubular sleeve 38 is rigidly carried at the right hand side of block 34 and extends therefrom concentricallv disposed about the shaft 16. The sleeve 38 has a sliding hearing with a central hub portion 39 of a skele ton'block member 40. This skeleton block 40 is of a general cylindrical conformation having an enlarged head portion 41 at its right hand end and fastened bv screws to the outer cylindrical casing which carries the platen roller. The block is formed with slots 40 and 40 running longitudinally throughout its length and bisecting each other along the central axis of the block. Two squared hub portions 42 and 39 respectively. spac d apart are provided. be ing centrallv bored for the passage of the shaft 16 therethrough. A coiled spring 43 encircles a portion of the shaft 16. having one end lvaring against the right hand end of the tubular sleeve extension 36 and the. opposite end hearing against the inner end of the squared huh portion 42 of block 40. A pair of levers 44 are mounted in the horitheir ends fulcrumed on the squared hub portion 42 and formed with recessed end members 44 adapted to engage the depending flange 21 of ring 21. lhe opposite ends of the lovers 44 are tapered as shown at 44 and are adapted to be acted upon by a cam' block 45 pinned to the sleeve 38 and sliding therewith in the horizontal slot of the skeleton block 40. A second pair of levers 46 are mounted in the vertical slots of the block 40 having notched end portions engaging the intnrned flange 36 of block 34. These levers are fulcrumed at 47 to small flat projecting lips 48 of the block 40. At their opposite ends the levers 46 are formed with outwardly curved extremities adapted to contact against small roller pins 49 carried in small blocks set acros the vertical slot of the block 40.
A coiled spring 50 encircles the sleeve or hub of the finger wheel 18. having one of its ends fixed in the carriage frame 1 and its other clamped around a projection or lu-g 50 on the sleeve. The purpose of this spring is to return the parts to normal position as soon as the finger wheel 18 has been turned and released. A pivoted catch or detent 51 is carried on the end of frame 1 adapted to engage when in operative position. the top of lug 50 to hold the wheel 18 and shaft 16 against rotation when the several clutch members with the cylindrical 'casing are in neutral position. \Vhen such is the case, the platen roller P can be turned freely forward or backward by means of av small knurled finger wheel 52 mounted on a stub shaft 53 located in a supplemental frame at the rear and at one side of the carriage frame. The shaft 53 has a slight sliding movement in its bearings and carries near its inner end a conical friction member 54 adapted to mesh with a similar friction conical member 55. carried on an idler shaft 56 on which is also nop-rotatably carried a friction driving roller 57. having contactwith the outer surface of the platen roll 1. A small leaf spring 56 tends to keep the shaft 53 in a fixed position with the member 54 normally inoperative or away from contact with the member 55. When it is desired to turn the platen roll by means of the knurled finger wheel .32. the shaft is pulled outwardly in the direction of the arrow and temporarily fixed in that position by means of a pivoted catch 59. which engages a slot 60 on the shaft 53. Any turning of tinger wheel 52 will be directly transmitted to the platen roll l.
The knurled finger wheel 6 has extending therefrom a finger or pointer 61 adapted to be moved across a line gage 6; lying just above the platen roller l and conforming to the curvature of its surface. A supplemental line gage 63 is attached to one of the usual spring clips 64 by which the paper is held against the platen roll.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to set the mechanism so as to advance the work paper, a given number of line spaces, or a given portion of a line space, the amount of throw which it is in tended to give the platen roll P is set by pulling the knurled Wheel 6 out in the direction of the arrow and turning it until the pointer 61 has registered with the proper index number on the gage piece 62. What actually takes place when this is done is the adjustment of fingers 16 on block 8 circumferentially in"relation to the teeth 25 carried on the inner clutch member 23. The result is obtained by moving shaft 5 in the direction of the arrow (1, Fig. 2 carrying with it the guide block 14 releasing the fingers 15; so as to permit the turning or partial rotation of shaft 5, sleeve 7 and block 8 carried thereon. After the degree of movement of the line spacer has once been set it is only necessary to turn the knob or finger wheel 18 until the platen roll has been advanced the predetermined amount and release the finger wheel whereupon the parts will be quickly and automatically returned to position. The cycle of operations which is attendant upon the partial rotation of shaft 16 through Wheel 18 is briefly; the movement of shaft 16 causes clutch member 23 to rotate in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 6) and through the engagement of its teeth 26 with the teeth 30 of the pivoted members 29 results in a corresponding movement of the clutch member 27. As 23 and 27 rotate in unison the block 34 is displaced longitudinally due to the helical worm thread 28. As the block 34 moves to the right the sleeve 38 carrying guide block 45 also moves in the same direction, the skeleton block does not move with the result that lever fingers 44 are clamped to ring 21 and fingers 46 are re leased from flange 36. At this time the slotted segment 20 engages pin 22 and turns ring 21, which in turn has the platen roller clamped to it by the fingers 44. As soon as the tail pieces 31 of the member 29 come in contact with stop 32, the teeth 30 and teeth 26 become disengaged whereupon clutch member 27 ceases to rotate but the other clutch member 23 continues its movement until the teeth 25 have passed through a slot in the first finger 16 and have engaged a portion of the second finger 16 with which they cooperate to swing the said "nger 16 out of engagement with the collar 35 of block 34. The instant this occurs springs 43 and 50 restore the parts to normal position and the operation may be repeated as may times as desired, without changing the line spacing adjustment at the end.
Before the co-acting clutch members 23 and 27 have been moved sufliciently to have effected any tripping action of the several fingers carried thereon and while the block 34 and sleeve 38 have moved only to cause the fingers 44 and 46 t clamped relation to the respect with which they engage,wher. are in this so-called neutral posi dctent 51 is thrown over the lug I the wheel 18 becomes temporar ly against rotation, and the platen roiier easily moved in either direction by n lation of knurled Wheel 52.
Instead of having a finger wHeel 6 at the outer end of shaft 5 so arranged that the two must be pulled outwardly and then turned in order to set the adjustment of the inner clutch members, an arrangement is pro' by which the same result may be obt' by simply turning two members in um without .the necessity of the outward puiiin action before described. In Fig. 18 an arrangement is illustrated by which the inner clutch members can be properly adjusted turning two members located at the left hand end of the platen roller. As here shown the rod 5 performs the same func tions as rod 5, shown in the form illustrated in Fig. 2, but it is operated in a different manner. At its outer end an upright arm 17* is pinned thereto and carries at its upper end a line marker 18' extending across to move over the line index plate. An extension 20 on arm 17 provides a suitable finger hold for rotating the member 17. A sleeve 6 fits over the shaft 5 and has keyed thereon a finger wheel 7 by which it is adapted to be turned. A worm thread 8' is provided on the outer surface of the sleeve (3 and is adapted to be engaged by an in-- tcriorly formed thread in a block 3 fixed to the frame. Flat lateral extensions 9, 9' are attached to block 3 and form guides for a block 14", which is adapted to slide laterally on shaft 5. The block 14" is constructed in a similar manner and performs the same functions as block 14, shown. in Fig. 1. Rollers 14- are carried thereon to press on the inclined fingers 15". The block 14" is moved by two small projections 19' at the end of sleeve 6. A coiled spring 13 similar to that in Fig. 1 is provided, having one and bearing against block 14 and the other against a. block 12 corresponding to block 12 of the other form.
It will be seen that the amount of circumferential displacement of the platen roller is determined by turning the member 17 by finger piece 20 until extension 18 has registeredwith the proper marking on the line spacing index; thus block 12' with its parts will be properly set, then finger wheel 7 is turned moving sleeve 6, advancing it to the right by reason of the worm thread 8' in fixed block 3. This results in guide block 14-" moving to the right and locking through the fingers 15", the parts exactly as is done par when fingers 15 of Fig. 1 are compressed.

A sleeve member 67 surrounds the shaft (36 and the shaft 16 of the principal form carrying a similar clutch member at its inner end. Fixed to the outer end of sleeve liT is a worm wheel (38 adapted to be driven by a second worm wheel (38", the latter being actuated by a linger lever (it).
Surrounding sleeve 67 is a second sleeve 70 having a flanged collar 71 pinned thereto near its end. just beyond the frame 1. The sleeve 70 is formed with two slots 90 each representing a quarter of the outer area and arranged at suitable points on opposite sides of the sleeve. Two sections or inserts 91 corresponding in contour to the curved slots are provided and are of slightly less length than the slots 90. The inserts 91 have their outer ends flush with the flanged collar 71 but are cut oil at their inner ends to allow free movement'of sleeve 70 baclc and forth. .\n operating segment similar to the one shown in Fig. 8 only with a round hole fits over sleeve TO and is fastened by screws extending through the sections 91 into the inner sleeve 67. just inside of the frame 1 at 93. I claim as my invention;-
1. The combination with a paper carriage and a rotatable platen, of means for moving said platen circumferentially comprising clutch mechanism inclosed within said platen. connections between said clutch mechanism and the platen adapted to be automatically locked and released, a member movable axially of the platen for adjusting said clutch mechanism and a member capable of rotational movement for actuating said clutch mechanism and rotating the platen.
2. The con'ibination with a paper carriage and a fixed cylindrical bearing carried there in, of a rotatable platen surrounding said bearing, means for moving said platen circumferentially comprising clutch mechanism iilclosed within said cylindrical bearing, means for actuating said platen, means for alternately locking and releasing the platen to and from said actuating means, and a member movable axially of the platen for varying the adjustments of said clutch mechanism.
3. The combination with a pap r carriage and a rotatable platen. of line spacing nu-cl anism therefor comprising an indicator fixed lib to said carriage and adapted to extend partially around the platen in proximity to the paper. clutch mechanism incloscd within said platen. adjusting m ans for said clutch mechanism including a shaft movable axi- 13% ally and rotatably in relation to said platen, said shaft extending from one end of the platen and carrying on its free end a pointer adapted to cooperate with said fixed indicator, means for actuating said platen, and means associated with said clutch mechanism for alternately locking and releasing said platen to and from said actuating means.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen and line spacing devices for controlling the extent of rotation of the platen, said line spacing devices comprising an. indicator in proximity to said platen, clutch mechanism inclosed within said platen, a hand wheel at one end of said platen for adjusting said clutch mechanism in relation to the indicator and a second hand wheel at the other end of the platen for actuating the platen after the clutch mechanism has been set to the desired adjustment.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen and line spacing devices for controlling the extent of rotation of the platen, said devices comprising a fixed cylinrical bearing for said platen, clutch mechanism inclosed within said cylindrical bearing, a shaft extending from said clutch mechanism to one end of the platen and provided with a hand wheel, said shaft being capable of axial and rotational movement for the purpose of adjusting said clutch mechanism, a shaft extending from said clutch mechanism to the other end of said platen and provided with a hand wheel, said shaft being capable of limited rotational movement for effecting the line spacing movement of the platen subsequent to the adjustment of said clutch mechanism.
7. The combination with a paper carriage, and a rotatable platen, of means for regulating the extent of rotation of the platen, comprising clutch mechanism inclosed withv said platen, an actuating member for effecting circumferential movement of the platen,
means at one end of the platen for adjusting the inner clutch mechanism and means at the other end of the platen for successively operating the clutch mechanism and effecting a locking relation between the platen and said actuating member.
9. The combination with a paper carriage and a rotatable platen, of means for regulating the extent of rotation of the platen, comprising clutch mechanism inclosed within said platen, means at one end of the platen adapted to be moved axiallyand rotationally to effect an adjustment of the inner clutch mechanism, and similar means at the other end of said platen adapted to be partially rotated to successively actuate said inner clutch mechanism to move the platen circumferentially to an extent independent upon the previous adjustment of the clutch mechanism and automatically return the several parts to their initial positions, respectively.
