- cirrom U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM, P. BISHOP, OF EDNA, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BLACKALLER BROTHERS, OF PEABSALL, TEXAS.
I PROD-POLE.
To all whom it mayconcem:
Be it-known that I, WILLIAM P. Brsnor, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Edna, in the county of Jackson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Prod- Poles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the care of live stock and particularly to prod poles.
An object of this invention is to produce a pole designed for use in prodding animals in driving them as when they are being loaded or unloaded in shipments, the said invention having for its further ob ect the provision of novel means for establishing electric circuit to contacts or terminals adapted to engage the animal, the said circuit being established when the contacts so engage the animal.
A still further object of this invention is to provide novel means whereby the circuit is controlled by pressure of a circuit closing medium when the prod pole strikes the animal, the said invention also including 1n one embodiment a switch which is manually operated for establishing such circuit.
A still further object of this invention is to produce a prodpole having a vibrating coil and an induction coil with means for energizing the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
7 In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a sectional view of the prod ole with the interior mechanism inelevation; Fig. 2 illustrates an elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 illustrates a diagrammatic view of the means for establishing the circuit.
In these drawings 1 denotes "a source of electricity, preferably an electric cell, 2 a vibrator, 3 an induction coil, 4 a manually operated switch, 5 a terminal or switch with which the contact 6 coacts for establishing a circuit through the conductors to be presently described, the said contact 6 being car- Speciflcation of Letters Patent.

ried by a plate 7 which is movable with relation to the end of the casing 8 constituting the pole, which is manipulated for prodding the animals. The plate 7 is furthermore provided with terminals 9 and 10 and these termlnals are to be energized through the conductors to be presently explained for delivering currents of electricity and establish-' nected to one pole of the vibrator, whereas the opposite pole of the vibrator is supplied with a conductor 14 leading from the induction coil 3, the said induction coil having a conductor 15 leading from the opposite pole of the battery.
The conductors 16 and 17 are connected to the secondary winding of the induction coil and they lead to the terminals or contact pieces 9 and 10. When the circuit in which the conductors 16 and 17 are included is to be energized, the switch 4 is manipulated and the vibrator will be energized as will be apparent from an inspection of the diagrammatic view Fig. 1, thus inducing a current in the secondary winding of the induction coil which will result in supplying current through the conductors 16 and 17.
Where the device is to be energized or current is to be supplied through the conductors, the circuit of which is to be closed by the operation of the plate 7, the conductor 18 is substituted for the conductors 11 and 13, and the said conductor 18 leads from one pole of the batteryto the switch member 5 so that when the plate 7 is moved and the contact 6 pushes the switch member 5 into engagement with the contact 20, circuit is established to one pole of the vibrator through the conductor 19 leading from the switch member 5 and to a switch member 20 which is contacted by the switch member 5. In this last mentioned arrangement, the circuitis established, as stated, from one pole of the battery to.one pole of the vibrator through the conductors, 18, terminal or the battery.
switch 5, switch member 20 and conductor 19. In this form, the conductors 14 and 15 heretofore described are used, the conductor 14 leading to the induction coil and the conductor 15 lea from the induction coil to e circuit thus established through the induction coil as the vibrator operates will result in energizing the contacts 9,'and 10 in the manner heretofore described.
The plate 7 'isheld in spaced relation to i the casing by springs 21 and-the springs yield when the plates are the animal being prodded.
When the manually operated switch 4 is ployed, the plate 7 and the switch which 7 it operates may be omitted,
' I claim- I In a rod pole, a casmg, a source of electricity erein, a vibrator, an induction coil,
conductors of electricity which the movable mg the switch contact, conductors of e ectricity connected pressed against to the secondary winding of the induction coil and electrodes through which the said conductors are connected.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
