Insaid patent a typewriting machine is provided with the usual carriage, and the computation device connected thereto includes denomination or computation bars, which are normally in ineffective position.l Said bars are however, by the travel of the typewriter carriage brought into effective position one at a time, with the result that if the numeral keys are operated,`the numeral key depressed will set up on the computation bar in effective. position, apin representing a digit printed by said numeral key. This transposition device ,is necessary, because the dog f is effective onv the jacks f1 beginning with the right-hand one, while.

the linkages of the transposition device form parts of parallel lnotion devices, which also include lugs f1, there being one lug for each computation bar c, and the levers f16 are of varying lengths so that each lever operates only its own linkage and therefore only its own computation bar.
.The numeral keys operate their pin-seti tinglinkages by stems 6 fast on the key* levers, said stems passing through a flange 62 'to guide them, and each stem 6 as it descends strikes on a rock arm fast on a link age-operating shaft 66, thereby rocking said shaft and depressing the corresponding pinsetting bar'67. To enable the rock shaft 66 to thus depress-the pin-setting arms each shaft 66 Vis provided with-a rock arm 612, which engages a bar 6, said bar 69 together with the, pin-setting bar 67 forming a parallel'motion device. |The connections are such that the depression of a numeral key pressing'a pin on the lifted computation bar 0. turn with rack bars c7 forming the side bars of the general operator. Said side bars c7,
the cross-bar 09, and the second cross-bar 01 together form the general operator, being a rigid rectangular frame. The bars c are returned by the cross bar 01 of the general operator on its return stroke. On the return stroke of the general operator, the wheels or devices a do not turn because 0f the pawl land* ratchet connections not shown herein between them and the pinions a1. At the very end of the returnv stroke of the general operator all of the set pins are restored to unset position by devices not shown herein.
In orde'r to prevent the operative from attempting to set `up pins when the general operator is not in its normal position, a lock is providedl for automatically locking the numeral keys unless said lock is released by the general operator. To enable this to be done, thestems 6 of the numeral keys are provided with extensions 611, which are fast thereon and which when a vnumeral key de- 615, said dogs forming an array having al limited throw. This throw is sufiicient to allow any single stem 617 to enter freely between its two dogs 615. lVh'enhQivever, one numeral key is depressed so as to bring its extension 617 between two dogs 615, said eX- tension takes .up all the throw of said array of dogs and prevents the depression of any other numeral key, because the extension 617 of any other numeral key'is unable to enter between its dogs 615. This simultaneous key-locking device, per se, forms no part of the invention claimed in the present application, and is fully disclosed in the application of which this is' ay division. This lock is utilized according lto the present invention for preventing any numeral key from being depressed when the general operator is moved forward from its normal idle' position. For this purpose there is provided between two dogs 615 at a point where it cannot interfere withvany extension 611, a locking-arm t1 which is fast on a rock shaft g, said -shaft being provided with a spring t2, which normally tends to thrust the arm t1 between the two dogs 615. lVhen the general operator is in its normal position, the cross bar 011 thereof bears against 4the front of the extension t of the locking-arm t1 and holds said arm clear of the dogs 61, with the result that the numeral keys can be freely operated. WVhen, however, the general operator moves forward, the spring t2 thrusts the arm t1 between the dogs 615, and
scends enter between pendent swinging ldogs `thereby closes up all the dogs 61 and locks' position. For this purpose there is 'provided an arm 22 fast on the rock vshaftt23 which .when the general operator moves forward linkages )m3, thereby locking them. To accomplish this, one of the side bars c7 of the general operator is provided with a notch 1225, having a cam-shaped rear end, in which notch normally rests a rock arm t2* fast to the rock shaft 23. This arm is normally held down in place in said notch by a coil spring t2@ embracing one end of the rock shaft t2?. lVhen, however, the general operator moves forward, the arm Z524 rides out of its not-ch and swings the locking arm t forcibly down on the linkages 7m. This not only locks said linkages and thereby prevents any computation bar c from bei-ng raised, but also by means of the connections through the levers fm, rods fw, and jacks f1,
said locking arm prevents the dog` f from moving any `jack and therefore prevents the typewriter carriage from feeding past any jack. It is impossible therefore for any operative to wreck a machine by attempting to set up numbers when the general operator has been partly but not completely actuated.
Variations `may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a recording computing machine, the combination with computing devices having decimal orders, of a decimal order selector, transposing devices, for making the selective action of said selector effective on said computing devices in a direction opposite to the travel of the selector, operating means adapted to be operated lonce for each line written by the typewriter, and means for forcing thegtransposing devices into normal positions when the operating means is actuated.
2. In a recording computing` machine, the combination'with computing devices having decimal orders, of a decimal order selector, transp'osing bars for selecting` the decimal orders of the lcomputing devices in a reverse direction to the travel of said selector. a movable arm for forcing said transposing bars into normal positions. and means for actuating said arm, substantially as described.
3. In a recording computing machine, the
combination with computing` devices having and said rock shaft, and common means for operating said computing devices and said rock shaft, substantially as described.
4. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination With typedevices operated thereby, of computing de vices, actuating means therefor, and means for locking said numeral keys in inoperative positions during the operation of said actu ating means.

In a, combined typewriting and computingI machine, the combination with parts in which numbers are" temporarily set up, of computing devices into which the set up numbers are carried, a general operator for so carrying them, numeral keys for setting up the numbers, and means for locking said numeral keys against actuation when said general operator has been partly but not completely actuated. y
7. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with computing devices` numeral keys and keys for writing any desired words, said numeral keys also controlling vsaid computing devices, of a general operator for carrying the numbers written by said last-mentioned keys into the computing devices, and means for locking said last-mentioned keys only when said general operator is moved from normal position. leaving said other keys free'to write words at this time. i
8. The combination with computing devices and numeral keys, of a general operator for carrying numbers indexed on the numeral keys into said devices, means for preventing simultaneous depression of two keys. and means associated therewith for locking all of the numeral keys when the general operator is moved out of normal position.
9. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with computing devices and typewriter numeral keys, of a general operator movable for carrying numbers written by said keys into said devices, a traveling carriage for determining into which devices said numbers shall be carried` and means for prewnting movement of said carriage by said keys while said operator is moved from normal position.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with type- -writer numeral keys and devices, of denominational members movable fi'om ineffective to effective position to enable said keys to be effective thereon, a carriage for so moving said members, a general operator for carry ing numbers from said nien'ibers into said wheels. and means for preventingr movement of said carriage by said keys while said operator is moved from normal position.
