IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.

Specification forming part or" Letters Patent No. 118,939, dated September 12, 1871.

To all whom 'it may concern: Be it known that I, Miss MARY A. HOLLAND, of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Burglar-Alarm, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the bell-sounding and signaling apparatus employed with apparatus to be set in motion by the opening of Windows or doors to sound an alarm, or with the bell-pulls of hotels for signaling from the different rooms; and it consists in the arrangement oi' apparatus hereinafter described.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.

A is the staff or lever whereon the bell is to be mounted; or, as I prefer, a number of bells hanging from a ring mounted horizontally' on the upper end of the staff, which is pivoted to a plate, B, at the lower end, and provided with a coiled or other spring, C, to withdraw it, after being actuated, to the normal position for being pulled again to ring the bells. D represents the tablets to be actuated at the same time that attention is called by the bells to expose the number of the room or window from which the bell is sounded, there being one tablet for each window or room, and all being pivoted on a rod, E, a little above the center of gravity, so that when set in motion they will swing some little time to afford ample time for the observer to note thenumber oftheone set in motion. The lever A, carrying the bells,

has a studpin,G,on one side ofa broad-facedratchet-wheel or the end of a ratchet-roller, H, which will act each time the wheel or roller is moved by a pawl, I, to push or vibrate the lever for rin ing the bells; the said pawls, of which there are as many as there are rooms or windows to be sig naled, moving the said wheel or roller about the distance from one pin to another at each operation and sliding upon a rod or rest, K, which supports them at the free ends. These pawls are connected to the bell-cranks L, mounted on a rod,.

M, one for each room or window, and actuated in one direction by a wire, N, extending to said room or window, and in the other direction by a spring, O. Each bell-crank, L, also actuates a wire pawl, I), which actuates the tablet carrying on its side the number of the room or window with which the said bell-crank is connected.

Thus, the bell may be sounded from any window without aii'ecting the apparatus connected with the other windows or doors, or interfering with the efficient operation thereof.

If the apparatus is required to be greatly eX- tended for many rooms or windows, the appliances herein shown may be extended on the other side of the block B, except the bell-arm A, another being used, and, in that case, the ring supporting the bells would be made haltlcircular to provide for not interfering with that to be placed on the duplicate bell-arm.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination and arrangement ofthe bellcranks L, pawls I and I), ratchet-roller or wheel H, bell-arm A, tablets D, and springs C and O, all substantially as specified.
