Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. Sm'rn, States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of. Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Stoves; and I hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stoves, and especially to 'a jstove'known as a brooder stove.
I The object of .this invention is to provide a stove of the character indicated having means for positively controlling the draft. so that the heat given off by the stove can be definitelyregulated and maintained approximately constant.
A further object is to so construct the stove that it shall be compact as possible having as few attachments as possible and arranging those that are employed in a simple and most convenient way so that it will be free from diiiiculties due to the use to which the stove is employed. For this reason the base portion is designed to permit the ready application of ahorizontal thermostat arm which projects from the base of the stove close to the floor line and in order to prevent the possibility of the small chicks interfering with the proper operation of the thermostat the movable arm of the thermostatic element is located below the stationary arm and protected by it;
With these objects in view, and .with the intention of securing other advantages which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction and com bination .of parts hereinafter described'in the specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2,
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved stove comprises a hollow base portion 10 in which is arranged a bottom wall 11, and the interior of the base above this bottom wall constitutes the ashpit, indicated at 12. To the under side of the'wall 11 is secured a sheet of suitable heat insulating material 13, preferably as- Specification of Letters Patent.

bestos,'and at the under side of the said sheet is preferably arranged a metallic plate ll which serves to reinforce the insulating sheet and hold it in position. On the base portion 10 is mounted a fire pot section 15, and above the ire pot section 15 is mounted the combustion chamber section 16, the fire pot section-and the combustion chamber section being bolted together in the usual manner. In the bottom of the fire pot is mounted the grate which consists 'of two grate bar sections 17 which are mounted so as to rock. The said grate sections are provided with downwardly extending rigid arms 18 which are connected by a' link 19 which transmit the motion of one grate bar section to the other grate bar section, so that when either section is rocked the other one will be correspondingly rocked. In the top of the combustion chamber section is formed an opening 21 which is adapted to receive the lower end ofa-magazine section 22'. The magazine section is provided with a removable cover 23 at its upper end to permit of the fuel being supplied thereto. In the top of the combustion section is for; Kl a flue opening 24, and adjacent to the flue opening is formed a check draft opening 25. The check draft opening 25 is provided with a cover 26 which has at one side small trunnions 27 which are mounted in suitable bearings on the top of the combustion section, thereby permitting the cover to swing up and down on the said trunnions. The said cover 26 is provided with an arm 28 which projects outwardly from a point between the trunnions and beyondthe edge of the combustion section. On the side of the stove near the base thereof is secured a rigid armor bracket member 30 which, near its outerend, carries an enlargement or' head 31: Below the rigid arm 30 is arranged a lever 33 which is providedwith a head S L arm. The said lever 33 is fulcrumed or connected at its outer end to the outer end of the rigid arm 30 by means of a screw threaded bolt 35 which passes up loosely through the end of the lever and through the end of the arm 30. On the bolt 35 is arranged a wing nut 36. The opposite end of the lever 33 is connected to the arm 28 on the cover 25 by a link 38. Between the heads on the rigid arm 30 and the lever 33 are arranged a pair of thermostatic elements 37; which are of the usual construction. Within the combustion cnamber on the under side of the topthereof below the flue opening and the draft opening is arranged a check draft fiamber 39 which is entierly closed except at one and adjacent to the check draft opening in the top of the combustion chamber.
It will readily be understood that when there is fire in the stove the products of combustion in order to escape will have to enter thecheck draft chamber, then pass below the check draft opening and escape through the flue-opening. When regulating the stove for maintaining a predetermined teui ierature the iving nut is so adjusted that there will be the necessary space between the heads on the rigid arm 30 and the lever 33 to accommodate the thermostatic element when expanded for that degree of temperature, and there will therefore be no pressure on the lever. Now, if the temperature rises beyond this predetermined degree the therniostatic elements will expand causing the inner end of the lever to swing down, which will draw down the link 38 connected with the arm 28 on the check draft cover 26 causing the cover to swing up and permitting the outer air draft chamber thereby reducing or counteracting the draft through the flue As the stove cools down the temperature will diminish and the thermostatic elements will contract, and when the pressure is removed from the lever 33tl1e check draft cover will swing down of its own Weight.
hat I claim is 1. In'a stove, the combination of a base portion, an upper magazine portion having its Widest part near the center, the side of same converging from the center, a flat to portion formed by the upper sides, dra t and fuel openings located on said flat top and both arranged at one side of the center thereof, a thermostatic device projecting from"the base portion, a vertical connecting rod extending upwardly therefrom, a check draft in said draft opening, and means connectlng said check draft and said arm, for the purpose specified.
2. In a stove, the combination of a base, a plurality of upper sections formed like to pass into the checlr frustuins of cones, the two sections being superin'iposed so that the-large portions of the cones are connectedtogether, a reduced flat top portion formed by the converging sides of one section, check draft and fuel openings in said flat top all eccentrically located therein, a rigid. thermostatic arm secured to the base, a movable thermostatic element mounted below tected thereby, a check draft in said draft opening, and means connecting the thermostatic element with said check draft, substantially as specifier.
In a stove, the combination of a base, an upper section above the base having its widest part near the center of he stove and having its sides converge upwardly, a reduced flat top portion formed by the converging sides, a thermostatic arm projecting horizontally from the base, a vertical connecting rod extending upwardly from said thermostatic arm, check draft and fuel openings located in said flat top portion of the stove and all eccentricallv ar'anged in their relation to said top, a check draft in said draft opening, and means for conmeeting said check draft to said connecting rod.
4. In a stove, the combination of a base, and a section of stove secured above the base. having its sides converge from the center to the top, a reduced fiat top portion formed by the converging sides, fuel openings and check draft openings located in the fiat top portion and all cccentrically arranged with the check draft opening located near the outer periphery of the top, a thermostatic arm projecting from the side ofthe stove, a check draft in said draft opening, and a vertical connecting, rod extending between said check draft and said thermostatic arm. for the purpose specified.
