To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR REGINALD ANGUs, a subjectof the King of Great Britain, residing at Spit Road Mosman, in the State of New South Tales and Commonwealth of Australia, solicitor, have invented a new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Railway SafeRunning Devices, (CQ) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to train protecting apparatus of the kind wherein a train is adapted on coming into contact with track contacts arranged along a railway track to complete selectively different signaling circuits through signaling apparatus on a train according to the particular track contact with which the train comes. into contact. Such apparatus is particularly suitable for train protecting systems in which a train is adapted on effecting contact with a track contact to have different indicating operations thereon according to the particular contacts with which it comes into contact and also to such a system as that according to my application for U. S. Letters Patent Serial No. 603378 of even date herewith wherein a single contacting device on a train is adapted to complete a controlling circuitfor operating trackl instruments to secure its protection, or a particular one of several indicating circuits on the train, according to the yparticular Contact with which the contacting device comes into contact.
According to this invention the contacting means comprises track contacts arranged in line along a track with their operative surfaces arranged in different positions transversely of the track and a contacting device arranged on a train and adapted to come into cont-act with the track contacts and to be displaced thereby laterally so as to contact with one or other of several contacts relating to different circuits on the train, according to the lateral displacement given to the contactingdevice by the particular track contact with which it effects contact. The various features of the invention are hereinafter defined in the claims and in order to explain clearly the inventionnan example of contacting means according thereto is illustrated by the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described with reference thereto.

tive view of the contacting device and switch box removed from a train, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the contacting device and switch boxtogether, showing in dotted lines the arrangement of the track contacts, and Fig. 3 is a diagram showing the railway track and track contacts and their disposition in relation to the contacting device.
The contact rod 97 is metallic and is mounted on a pivot as shown within the switch box 99 so as to be adapted to rock laterally therein. On the top of the switch box 99 but insulated therefrom are mounted contacts 106, 105, 104, 103, and 0103, 0104, 0105, 0106, connected electrically to conductor wires 305, 110, 145, 151, 148, 111, 0145 and 0305 whch form parts of different circuits arranged vpartly on the train and partly on the track. The upper end101 of the rod 97 is adapted to effect electrical con tact with the contacts in the switch box when displaced from its mid position in which it is normally maintained by springs 100 attached thereto and to the switch box. The lower end of the rod 97 is provided with a roller 98, to minimize friction on the surfaces of the track contacts with which it engages. The dotted lines in Fig. 2 indicate the relative positions of track contacts, the operative surfaces 046, 042, 041, and 040, of which are adapted to displace the contacting device 97 to contact with contacts 0106, 0105, 0104, 0103 respectively and the operative surfaces 40, 41, 4Q, and 46 of which are adapted to displace the contacting device 97 to contact with contacts 103, 104, 105, and 106 respectively. These track contacts have ramped ends to movethe contacting device 97 gradually from its mid position to the position to which it is finally displaced by the operative surface of a contact with which it engages and the operative surfaces thereof consist of electrically conductive plates mounted on the non-conductive bodies of the contacts, the contact plates being provided with electrical conductors connecting them in the desired manner with apparatus on the track. v
The various parts of the contacting means illustrated in the drawings are numbered in a manner corresponding to i that of the switching means described in the specification of my aforesaid application Serial No. 60337 8 so that it may be readily understood how the present invention may be applied t0 and used in conjunction with a train protecting system arranged and adapted to operate in the manner described in the aforesaid specification.
lVhat I claim is 1. Railway signaling apparatus comprising electric circuits adapted to be completed through signaling apparatus on a train, track contacts arranged along a railway track and having their operative surfaces located in different positions transversely of said track, and a contacting device on said train adapted to come into contact with said track con'- tacts and to be thereby caused to complete said electric circuits selectively according to the positions transversely of said track of the operative surfaces of said track contacts.
2. Railway signaling apparatus comprising electric circuits adapted to be completed through signaling apparatus on a train, track contacts arranged in line longitudinally of a railway track and having their operative surfaces located in different positions transversely of said track, and a contacting device on saidv train adapted to come into contact with said track contacts and to be thereby caused to complete said electric circuitsselectively according to the positions transversely of said track of the operative surfaces of said track contacts.

Railway signaling apparatus comprising electric circuits arranged partly on a train and partly on a railway track, a contacting device on said train movable transversely of said track and means on said track adapted to give said contacting device displacements transversely of said track, said contacting device being adapted to cause the completion of said electric circuits therethrough and through said means on said track selectively according to the displacements given thereto by said means.

Railway signaling apparatus comprising electric circuits arranged partly on a train and partly on a railway track, track contacts arranged along a railway track and having their operative surfaces located in different positions transversely of said track, and a contacting device on said train adapted to come into contact with said track con-- tacts and to be thereby caused to complete said electric circuits selectively therethrough and through said track contacts according to the positions transversely of said track of the operative surfaces ofsaid track contacts.

Railway signaling apparatus comprising electric circuits arranged partly on a train and partly on a railway track, track contacts arranged in line longitudinally ofv a railway track and having their operative surfaces located in different positions transversely of said track, and a contacting device on said train adapted to cc-me into contact with said track contacts and to be thereby caused to complete said electric circuits selectively therethrough and `through said track contacts according to the positions transversely of said track of the operative surfaces of said track contacts.
6. Railway signaling apparatus comprising electric circuits adapted to be completed through signaling apparatus on a train, two
sets of track contacts arranged in line longitudinally of a railway track, the two sets having their operative surfaces projecting on opposite sides of said ,linel and the contacts of each set being arranged in different positions transversely of said track, and a contacting device on said train adapted to come into contact withA said track contacts and to be thereby caused to complete said electric circuits selectively according to the displacements given thereto by the operative surfaces of said track contacts.
7. Railway signaling apparatus coinprising electric circuits arranged partly on a train and partly on a railway track, two sets of track contacts arranged in line longitudinally of a railway track, the two sets having their operative surfaces projecting on opposite sides of said line and the contacts of each set being arranged in different positions transversely of said track, and a contacting device on said train adapted to come .into contact with said track contacts and to be thereby caused to complete said electric circuits selectively therethrough and through said track contacts according to the displacements given thereto by the operative surfaces of said track contacts.
