LUMINOUS PENDALIT FOR PULL-SWITCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. HANNA y, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of'Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Luminous Pendants for Pull-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to luminous articles and, more particularly to a ball-shaped pendant adapted to be mounted upon or sea cured to the lower end of a pull-chain such as is used in a pull switch electric light socket, and also to the method of making and coating said luminous ball.
It is an object of my invention to provide an article of luminous character which, owing to its peculiar construction, is capable of absorbing a larger quantity of light units during exposure than other luminous articles now on the market and which when employed in a darkened room, will be visible from any point of view. I
I desire to here state that in-carrying out the aforesaid object I prefer to coat the interior surface of the bulb which is usually made of glass with a thin, substantially translucent film of luminous substance so that a portion of the rays of light will pass through the wall adjacent the light and im-' pinge upon the opposite wall thereby subjecting the luminous substance upon all sides of the pendant to the action of the light and thus permitting a much greater absorption of the light units whereby both the period of and intensity of luminosity of the pendant is increased and the pendant may be visible from any point of view.
A still further object of my invention is to so treat the article coated with luminous substance in a manner that it will be evenly distributed throughout the entire surface thereof.
Still further objects of my invention are to produce a luminous article, the duration of luminosity of which is longer than that of similar articles now upon the market; to produce a. luminous article that is inexpensiveand easy to manufacture so that it may be sold to the consumer for a comparatively small amount; to provide a pendant ball that may be readily attached to pull-chain lamp sockets already in use; and also to provide "an article in which the liminous materialwill be protected from moisture and also from liability to accident and wear.
I prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein, Figure 1 is an enlargedelevation of my improved luminous pendant ball showing the same attached to a pull-chain and drawn to anexagge'rated scale. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail thereof showing the manner of attaching or securing the same to a pullchain. Fig. 3 is an end or'top view of the securing ferrule removed from the bulb.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be observed that my improved luminous pendant preferably comprises a transparent or translucent glass -bulb 5 of substantially spherical or globular shape and hollow. I prefer to make the pendant hollow and spherical in order that a greater quantity of light units may pass,
In order to secure the pull-chain to the ferrule, I prefer to form two transverse slots 19 nd 20 in the closed end ofthe latter, one of said slots (20) being wider and provided with an offset communicating recess 21 of substantially circular outline, s shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The pull-chain is usually made up of a plurality of small connected beads 22 and in attaching-the same to the ferrule, one of these beads is forced into said wider slot 20 and the connecting link between thisbead and the adjacent bead is inserted into the recess 21 after which the end of the ferrule is pressed together by pliers or otherwise.
The luminous material 9 is preferably dev posited upon the interior of the hollow bulb 5 and permitted to dr in a moderately heated temperature, an at the same time rotated about a common axisfor the purpose of evenly distributing the luminous material therem during the drying operation.
In the above description and the drawings forming, a part hereof, I have disclosed numerous specific devices for carrying out the objects of my invention which, of course, may be'readily modified or refined without materially departing from the spirit of my invention, all of which will be obvious to others skilled in this art. I desire it understood, therefore, that all such modifications or refinements are contemplated within the 1 scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claim.
