LEWEN R. NELSON, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
LAWN-SPRINKLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1916.
Application filed October 14, 1912. Serial No. 725,615.
T 0 all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, LEWEN R. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lawn sprinklers.
My invention has general reference to a sprinkler adapted to discharge in advance of a transverse line at approximately the hose connection of the sprinkler.
It also has reference to a sprinkler adapted to sprinkle a substantially square area, and particularly the invention has reference to the form of the sprinkler body, the arrangement of the discharge openings with relation to each other and to the surface of the sprinkler.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
I am familiar with the fact that heretofore at least one lawn sprinkler has been patented, adapted to discharge only in advance of the sprinkler body. I am also aware from my own earlier development, that the common sprinkler head is adapted to discharge axially about itself as a center and adapted to sprinkle substantially a square area, but am not aware of any sprinkler having heretofore been patented or used in which a hollow walled body was formed from a single piece of metal and provided with a single closure wall, wherein perforations were provided in the body entirely above a horizontal plane through substantially the center thereof, that is, in substantially the manner disclosed in the drawings.
I have heretofore not known of a sprinkler designed to discharge in advance of its hose connection, having its perforated portion formed on varying curved lines to facilitate the positioning of the discharge openings at particular and special angles to accomplish a rectangular form of sprinkling, and incidentally and designedly to strengthen the sprinkler body.
The more seams that are necessary in the construction of a sprinkler, the shorter efficient service it will be capable of rendering, and the less its ability to resist blows that tend to crush or dent, therefore the shorter its efiicient durability. Conversely, the
least number of joints and the greater the ability to resist crushing or denting, the longer will be the durable and efficient servlce.
My manufacturing experience has taught me to aim first for efliciency and then for economy in construction. With this end in view, in my present invention, I have formed the container or main body of the head of a single piece of metal, and therefore without seams, except a rear vertical closure wall, and have shaped the body of the head generally on curved lines to give resistance against outwardly applied force, and have provided corrugations intermediate its periphery and base, to further strengthen the same, in addition to the functional adaptability of accomplishing a cer tain designed angular disposition of discharge openings.
The device is a very simple one, comprising a hollow seamless body 2 formed from a sheet metal blank by stamping, the top and bottom walls of which are for the greater part convex or outwardly bulging and inclined toward each other from the straight rear edge of the torically curved front portion, a slight depressed recess or reverse curve 8 being formed in said walls near the front edge which with said torically shaped front portion serves to strengthen the head against exterior pressure and blows, while the curved recess 3 also prop erly positions the discharge openings made in the top wall only.
4 is a rear wall provided with flange engagement with sprinkler body 2.
5'is an inlet opening in wall 4, and 6 is a hose coupling suitably seated and connected with said opening, and lying substantially entirely within the interior of sprinkler body 2.
The upper face of the sprinkler body is provided with perforations as disclosed, arranged relative to reverse curved portion 3, and the general contour of the discharge face to accomplish the sprinkling of substantially a rectangular area, and in advance of rear wall 4 of the sprinkler body.
I prefer to form the sprinkler body in substantially the form disclosed, that is elongated at either side of the inlet opening 5, and provided with substantially straight edges on the long sides, and to unite the rear wall and main body by a seam'extending laterally some distance from said sprinkler body, thereby providing a substantial and placement edge that facilitates ready adjustment of the-head with reference to the ground surface, that is or may be desirable to cause the discharge at shorter or longer distances.
I-have shown herein my preferred form of embodiment of my invention, which in my judgment, and based upon experience, is the best form. However, Ido not desire to limit myself to the exact form herein disclosed, but claim all forms of construction that fall legitimately within the principle of my invention.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described the combination of a laterally elongated straight closure wall, and a forwardly converging seamless hemispheroidal sprinkler head extending around and secured to the'said closure wall by a projecting flange joint lying in a vertical plane.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a forwardly converging seamless hemispheroidal sprinkler head hav ing similar top and bottom faces, a laterally Copies of this patent may be obtained for elongated straight rear closing'wall secured by a projecting flange lying in a vertical planeto the open end of the sprinkler head, and laterally extending depressions in the top and bottom faces of and adjacent the outer portion of the sprinkler head.
3. A sprinkler head comprising an elongated dome-shaped member, a closure wall at the base of the same having an inlet open ing therein, and a laterally extending rib at the junction of the dome-shaped member with the rear wall to formarocking edge for facilitating the disposition of the head at the desired angles with respect to the ground. 4. A sprinkling device comprising a laterally elongated vertical wall, and a seamless hollow'head connected 'fluid tight at its rear to the marginal edge of said wall by an outwardly projecting flange that sustains the sprinkling device on the ground and forms a rocker for the same, said head having forwardly converging and outwardly bulging upper and lower faces through the'upper of which faces discharge openings are formed. In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
