Description

Mnesse UNITED STATES lflllilDlltlUK. ROUX, OF STRYKER, ()lll().
IMPROVEMENT IN SORGHUM-STRIPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,881, dated September 1'?, 1571.
To all whom it may Concern:
[ie it known that I, I*`R]CI)HRICK ROUX, of Stryker, in the county ot Williams and State ot' (lhio, have invented a new and uset'ul improvement in Sorghn11i-Strippers5 and l do hereby deelare the tollowing to be a t'nll, clear, and exact deseription thereot', sutiieient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to t'nlly understand and to make and nse the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ot' a sorghumstripper etmstrncted according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view otA the strippingsprings and openings, showingl the oppositeside t'rom` that represented in Fig. l.
This invention eonsists in the` construction and arrangement ot' the stripping devices, as herein at'ter deseribed and claimed, whereby the ea.- paeity ot' the stripper is much increased, and it is adapted t'or stalks ot' diti'erent diameters.
Similar letters ot` reference indieate like parts in the two ligures.
The stripping devices are attached to a` portable frame, which is preferably constructed as shown in Fig. l, ot' two parallel bars, a b, let into end pieees c e, ot inverted T-shape, to which are secured inclined supports d d. 1n the lower cross-bar I are two square openings, the edges ot' which, on the side shown in Fig. 2, are slightly' beveled. ()n the opposite side ofthe bar a metallic plate, e, is let in tiush with the surface. This plate has openings registering with those in the bar, but having rounded corn-ers. To the upper bar d are attached strips ot' metal f j", twisted to form springs, their lower portions, which become gradually narrower, extending across the openings in the plate e. I-loriztiintal `springs or strips q y, similar to those marked j', are secured to the bar b Iand extend across the openings in the metallic plate at right angles to the springs j', which they overlap. The outer portions of the springsfg beyond the twist, besides heilig made gradually narrower, are re` duced in thickness toward the extremities to forni blades with rather thin edges. It will be seen that by this construction and arrangement o1' parts, each opening in the metallic plate e is made to torm four corners," through which the eanes may be drawn t'or strippine'. lhns the stripper can be used mueh longer without sharpening than would he possible it the opening and two springs t'ormed but one oritiee; and the springs are so seeured that they can be turned or sprung laterally to a` slight extent, thus making the corners ot diiterent sizes to strip large or small canes. This resnlt is, however, aeeomplished to some extent without turning or bending the springs, by their outer portions heilig gradually narrowed, as bel'ore mentioned. The sorghum canes or stalks having been eut down and the tops removed, are carried on a light raek to the Stripper. 0n the side where the rack is placed stands the t'eeder, who inserts the top ends oi' the eanes one by one into either ot' the corners. On the opposite side the stalk is grasped by some one stationed there, drawn through, and piled up on` rails, where they are tied in handles. The stripper is iliade double, so that the eanes may be stripped several at a time byoneor more men on each side ot' the stripper. this stripper the work may be rapidly and easil pertormed, and it is well done.
I am aware that sorghlun-strippers have been made with the springs arranged at right angles and crossing each other; but therehasonly been formed a single opening tor the passage ot' the cane. springs as new in itselt'; but
Having thus described my invention, what l clailn as new, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-
The plate e, having openings as described, in combination with a framework, and with springs fg extending across the openings at right angles to each other, whereby each pair ot' springs, in connection with each openingl in the plate, t'orms a plurality ot'variablestripping oritiees, substantially as herein described.
The above speeitieation ot'my invention signed by me this 13th day ot' May, 1871, in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses.
Titnessesz "iLLiAM KINKLE, LOUIS THOUROT.
