To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERRMANN SONN- TAG, of Chicago Park, in the county ofNevada and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the reference characters thereon, forming a part of this specicultivators particularly the riding or disk type.

The invention has for its object to provide for suitably shifting or adjusting the seat of the cultivator and to do this without the occupant dismounting, such shifting or changing the position of the seat being especially called for in plowing or cultivating along a hillside, while it is, of course, a great convenience and an advantage to effect such shifting or adjustment without the driver or occupant leaving his seat as is obvious.

A further object is to carry out these ends in a simple, expeditious and effective manner.

The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter'fully disclosed and defined by the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my in vention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may bew made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and in which:

In carrying out my invention, I mount upon a suitable supporting and transporting means, disclosed by dotted lines, an arcuate or semi-circular member or rack B with its forward ends or terminals suitably clipped or secured as at b to said supporting means.

The member B is preferably a single casting or entirety, although being formed with spaced walls having spaced notches c in their upper edges, the notches in one wall being coincident with those in the otherwall as seen in Fig. 1, the function of which notched arcuate member B will later appear. A seat equipped or carrying bar Ais pivoted at the forward end of its horizontal portion by means of the bolt 8, to the rear end of the tongue 1, indicated in dotted linesin Figs. 1 and 2, whereby the position of said seatcarrying bar may be changed or shifted horizontally to the right or left according to the inclination of the hill-side with respect to which the seat and its carrying bar may be desired to be adjusted as in bringing the weight of the seat-occupant or operator directly over the cutter or plow elevated by reason of the hill-side to cause the desired penetration of the soil thereof by the cutter or plow, as will be readily appreciated.

The seat-carrying member or bar A is itself provided with a resilient lever footengaged pawl or latch O pivoted at its forward end, as at c to said bar or member and having at an intermediate point thereof a tooth or detent C depending from its underside and adapted to engage a coincident notch e in the arcuate member B as seen in Fig. 2, an aperture or orifice d being provided in said seat-carrying bar A for the passage therethrough of said tooth or detent, as seen in Fig. 2. The resiliency of the lever or pawl G which is upwardly bent, as at 0 intermediate its pivot and tooth, provides for normally effecting the retention of said tooth in a notch'of the member or socket p and thereby provides for the automatic retention of the seat-carrying bar in suitable or fixed position, as against casual displacement. The resilient pawl or lever C has its outer, or that end next to the seat, upturnedas at 0 or otherwise adapted, to be readily engaged by the foot of the operator or driver from his seat f for uplifting said end thereof to suitably disengage its tooth c from the rack or member B when it may be desired to shift or adjust the position of the seat carrying bar, with the seat under the conditions above indicated.

A foot-connection rest bar D having connection by means of links D with the yoke or frame carrying the disk plows or cutters as seen in dotted lines in the two figures, is as suggested'provided for the driver or operator to rest his feet upon when shifting the position of the seat-supporting bar, said foot-rest bar also being adapted to have a limited horizontal pivotal movement to dispose the same so as to not interfere with the rotation ofthe disks or plows.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that my invention provides for utilizing the weight of the operator or driver in effecting the requisite or regular plowing action; as upon the hillside, this being possible as the operator is not required to dismount or leave his seat as has been made apparent.

Having thus fully described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A cultivator comprising a supporting frame, a seat supporting member comprising a horizontal portion, pivoted at its forward end to thetongue of the frame whereby the position of the seat supporting member may be shifted laterally in either direction, an
