Application filed March 13; 1914, SerialNo. 824,524. Renewed February 11, 1916'. Serial No. 77,795.
To all whom it may concern: V
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MILMORE, citizen of the United States, residingat Brewer, in the county of Penobscot, and" My invention consists of an improved de posit and collection receptacle and is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- V Figure 1, is a perspective View of the whole device from the rear shelf lowered for reception of a bottle or package. I
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of my device with shelf lowered and bottle in place. Fig. 3, is a front elevation of same. Fig) 4:, is a side elevation of my device showing shelf partially raised, with arms and guard-rail partially folded. Fig. 5, is an enlarged side elevation of spring hinge.
. Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the figures.
The principal object of. my device is to provide a means of delivering bottles of milk, collecting the pay therefor, and receiving the empty bottle withoutthe intervention of the housewife or servant, though it is applicable to the delivery of packages of any description.
In construction I provide a rectangular frame A fitted with a door a provided with a lock a and hinged preferably at one of its sides to the frame A, the key being intrusted to the milkman.
A swinging shelf B is springhinged at b b to the sill of the frame A and is sup ported in the horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1, by arms 5 Z) formed with knucklejoints k 70 and with slots y at their upper ends to engage with and work upon studs :0 upon the side posts of the frame A, and at their lower ends hinged to the shelf B. The spring-hinges b b are of sufficient strength to overbalance and raise the shelf B to the perpendicular position when unloaded. Or the springs may be omitted and the shelf turned up by hand.
A guard rail C to keep the bottle on the shelf is mounted on the shelf B by hinged standards 0 and is raised and lowered by the movement of the arms I) b by means of studs 3 on the arms working in slots 3 in the rail and a cup D or other receptacle is affixed to the side of the frame A wherein the price of the milk may be left and taken thence by the milkman. The Whole device is inserted in a hole cut 1n a panel of an outside door shaped to receive the frame and properly secured thereto. When not in use and unloaded the shelfB turns to the perpendicular position parallel with the plane of the door a, the rail C and the arms b 6 also folding fiat on the shelf B, thus ceasing to project into the house to anyobjectio nable extent and'leaving a space between itself and the smalldoor a suflicient to contain the folded' armsbt, the cup D and the folded raili C;
In operationthe housewife turnsdown the shelf and places the empty bottle thereon. The milkman on arrival unlocks and opens thesmall door a, removes the empty bottle, substitutes the full bottle, takes his pay from the cup D, and closes and locks the door. At her leisure the housewife removes the full bottle and the shelf B turns up into the perpendicular position and out of the way.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent 1 The herein described device for receiving and delivering bottles and other articles consisting of the combination of a frame preferably rectangular comprising a sill and side posts having an outer door hinged to the inner surface of the frame; a folding shelf hinged to the inner edge of the sill of the frame and supported horizontally by arms having. knuckle-joints pivotally secured at their upper ends to the side posts of the frame and hinged at 7 their lower ends to the shelf, said shelf being adapted to be turned to the perpendicular position and rest substantially parallel to the plane of. the outside house door, and said frame being adapted to fit and be secured in an aperture cut in the outside door of a house.
2. The herein described device for receiving and delivering bottles and other articles consisting of the combination of a frame preferably rectangular comprising a sill and side posts having an outer door hinged to the inner surface of the frame,
a folding shelf hinged to theinner edge of the sill of the frame and supported horizontally by. arms having knuckle-joints se-- cured at their upper ends to the side posts of the frame by studs on the frame working in slots in the arms and hinged at their lower ends to the shelf; studs upon the frame placed to engage with the slots in said arms; a guard railsupporte'd on said shelf by hinged standards and slotted near its ends to receive and engage with studs upon said arms working in said slots in said rail; studs upon said arms placed to engage with the slots in said rail; said shelf being adapted to be turned to the perpendicular position and rest substantially parallel to the plane of the outside house door, and said frame being adapted to fit and be secured in an aperture cutin the outside door of a house.
3. The herein described device for, receiving and delivering bottles and other articles consisting of the combination ofa frame preferably rectangular comprising a sill and side posts having an outer door hinged to the inner surface of the frame; and fitted on'the outside with a lock and key; a folding shelf hinged to the inner edge of the sill of theframe and supported horizontally by arms having knuckle-joints secured at their upper ends to the side posts fiopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner Washington, D. 0.
of the frame by studs on the frame Working in slots in the arms and hinged at their lower ends to the shelf; studs upon the frame placed to engage with the slots in said arms; a receptacle for money secured to one of the posts of the frame and so placed as to be between the inner surface of the door and the top of the shelf when the shelf is raised; a guard rail supported on said shelf by hinged standards and slotted near its ends to receive and engage with studs upon said arms Working in said slots in said rail; studs upon said arms placed to engage with the slots in said rail; said shelf being adaptedto be turned to the perpendicular position and .rest substantially parallel to the plane of the outside house door, and said frame being adapted to fit and be secured in an aperture cut in the outside door of a house.
