and useful Improvements in Brick-Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brick and the machine and method of making the same.
Theprincipal object is the provision of a means for producing a brick with roughened surfaces, known as the mat brick, but having the edge portions of these surfaces idjacent the corners of the brick smooth, for the purpose of preventing the chipping or mutilation of these edges and to provide a brickrof more attractive and finished appearance. U
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and then sought to be defined inthe appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment" of my in vention, it being undcrstood that various changes may be made in praptice within the scope of the claims, without digressing from my inventive idea.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a front elevation showing the mouth of the die of a stiff mud brick machine, shown with means for producing the mat brick with the smooth edge portions; Fig. 2 1s a side elevation indicating the operation of the means disclosed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a brick, the product of this mechanism .and method.
Previous to this invention, it has been customary to make a brick having a-roughened surface, or surfaces, this being accomplished by the use of wires positioned across and adjacent the mouth of the die of a brick machine, the surface of the brick being roughened for the purpose of ornamentation. It has been found in practice where this ornamentation extendsfor the full area of the surface, that the edges chip off and are mutilated, detracting from the finished appearance of the brick, and it is the purpose of my invention to provide a brick and a means and method of producing the, same, which has the same ornamental appearance and in addition, is provided with smooth edge portions, whereby the chipping and mutilation.
is reduced to a minimnm and a more finished brick produced.
The brick itself is shown inFig. 3 of the drawing, where the numeral 1 designates the I ornamenting surface and the numeral 2 the smooth edge portions of the brick at the corners thereof. One form of mechanism for producing a brick of this character is disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing,
wherein the numeral 3 designates the mouth portion'of the die of a standard form of brick machine, through which a eolumn of clay is expressed of the proper cross-section,
and subsequently severed into the individual bricks by a'cutting mechanism not shown. The means for decorating the surface of bricks made by this machine are shown in; the form of the horizontal wire or member 4 and, the vertical wire members 5 which are aciustably securedby means of the tension bolts 6 to the brackets orother, supports 7, which are mounted onthe mechanism in any suitable way. These wire'memhere 4 and 5 are mounted so as to beparallel to the inside face of the mouth of the die, but are positioned inwardly a short distance therefrom, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, whereby a small portion of the surface of the clay column is removed and the surface of the clay column ornamented, substantially as indicated in the drawing, this ornamentation taking the form of a peculiar roughening.
To provide the smooth edge portions of the brick, I position in the corners of the mouth of the die, suitable pressure members, these taking the form of the angle members 8 in the upper corners, having the two bearing surfaces 8 and 8 and the straight plate members 9 in the lower corners of thernouth of the die having the one bearing surface 9.
It is to be noted that these members 8 and 9 are positioned so that the bearing surface 8 8 and 9 are within the line-of the decorating members 4 and 5, whereby the smooth portion of the column of clay along the of the corner edge of the clay column, while no clay is expressed,
ornamentation, means the other members 9 only provide the smooth edge portion along one side of the corner edge,as will be evident.
While I have described and disclosed a specific means for producing a brick having a rough ornamented surface with smooth edge portions, it is to be understood that this is merely illustrative of the manner in which the method of making this brick may be carsmooth edge portions.
2. A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a brick machine havinga die through which the column of clay is expressed, wires arranged adjacent the mouth of said die to provide the surface of the column of clay with roughened ornamontation, means provided Within the die for depressing the edge portions of the eolumn of clay slightly below the line ofaction of said wires, whereby the roughened surface of the clay column is formed with smooth edge portions, said depressing means including angle members having two hearing surfaces for the edge portions on each side of one of the corner edges of said clay column. A
A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a brick machine having a die through which the column of clay is expressed, wires arranged adjacent the mouth of said die to provide the surface of the column of clay with roughened ornamentation, means provided Within the die for depressing the edge portions oi. the cob umn of clay slightly below the line of action of said wires, whereby the roughened surface of the clay smooth edge portions, said depressing means including angle members having two bearing surfaces for the edge portions on each side of one of the corner edges of said clay column, and additional members having one bearing surface for the edge portion on one side of the corner edge of said clay column.
4. In combination with a brick machine, having a die through. which a column of clay is expressed, Wires arranged. parallel to the inner surface of the mouth of the die to roughen the surface of the ciay column for the purpose of ornamentation, and means positioned Within the corners of the die for depressing the edge portions of the clay column below the line of action/01f said wires so that the ornamented clay column is provided with smooth edge portions.
5. In. combination with. a brick machine having a die through which a column of clay is expressed, wires arranged parallel to the inner surface of the mouth. of the die to roughen. the surface of the clay column for the purpose of ornamen'tation, andmeans positioned Within the corners of the die for depressing the edge portions of the clay col- ,umn below the line of action of said .vires so that the ornamented clay column is pro vided with smooth edge portions, said means including angle members'having two bearing surfaces whereby the edge portions on both sides of the corner edges of the clay column are depressed.
