Description

.invented certain new ARTHUR MeDoUGALL DUCKHAM. or AsHsTEA). ENGLAND.
DISCHARGING i/'ERTIlCl-LL- RETORTS.'
Specification of Letters Patent. 'litclii'td JHI Original application led July 28, 1915,'Seria1 No. 42,378. Divided and this application filed December 17, i915. seria1N0.67,4e9.
To all v11i/ivm 'it may conce-'rn YBe it known that 'L Airrnini McDoUoALi. Di'iciiiiaM, a subject ot' the King of Great Britain, residing in Ashtead, Englanddiave and uset'ul Improvements in Discharging Yertieal Retorts, of which the following` .is a specification. The present specification relates to la method of `discl'i-arging through a water seal. a vertical retort, wherein'coal oi' the like is continuously carhonized, and is a division from the specification ot which the serial number is 42,378 of i915.
The method, according' to my invention, consists in imparting a reciprocating movement to a Water trough, which forms the seal, and wholly or partially supports the charge of the retort, and in completely or partially vpreventing the n'iaterial in the trough from sharing this movement in one direction, whereby some of` the material leaves the trough into which fresh material descends. v
Beneath' the end of the retort thereof there is a stationary plate or like acting as a scraper in relation to the hot- 'tom oi the trough. When -a reciprocating movement is imparted to a suitable mecha# nism the cairhonzedv inaterialj'is carried with it by the movement free space is left between the material and the scraper into which some. ot the charge in the retort descends. while during the movement in the other directio1 the scraper prevents thev the trough so that Some of the material :t'alls over the edge of the latter. Bv'plaeing the lscraper on a line bisecting o fsulistantially bisecting the discharge opening ot' the izetort or extension, the movement o t the trough in each direction 'becomes eflective in discharging the carionized material. When the scraper is Hush with one side of thel retort, in which :ase it may ne an extension of the side or the 'eut discharge opening. the
or extension movement o' the trough in one direction only -is effective for discharging from the trough.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical section through a water trough A into which the lower end of a' retort B extends hclovv the l in one direction and a,
material from movin-g with.
longer side ot' an ohliipiely the Water seal C. The trough A. is adapted to receive reciprocating motion on the roller l) and. in this example, one
retort B is extended to act as a stationary lscrapeifin relation to the materialin the trough. Vhen the trough iis-moved' to the lett, some of 4the carhonized material is discharged over the right edge ot' the trough,
and when the trough ismoved to the right some ot .the charge .falls troni the retort' linto the trough.

2. Means "for discharging earbonized nia-.-
terial. from a vertical retort,- coinprising in combination a trough forming a Walterseal for the retort, means for imparting a rectilinear movement tion-ary scraper inthe trough adapted to' prevent the movement 'of thetrough' from to the said trough and a stalheing vfully imparted to the material therein.
3. Means for discharging vcailionized material from a verticalretort, ,comprising in combination a trough 'for the retort, meanstor imparting a rectiiormifng' a Water seal` linear*reciprocating movement to the said trough and laI stationary scraper secured to the vertical retort andcon'ihination 'atrough forming a water seal for the retort, means tor imparting a re' ciprocating movement to the said trough` and a. stationary scraper vflush with one side ot'the discharge opening of the retort and extending across said trough.
