useful Improvements in' Cinematographs, vof `which the following is a'specification.
e My present invention relates to cinematographs and has speclal reference 'toy the provision of simple and effective-mechanism for what is called framing the picture in thatl variety of cinematograph designed for prowhich employ a strip or chronologically successive views. In such machines the respectivel views are moved successively into position before an opening where they remain stationary for a brief period of time while a beam of v'light is thrown through them in order to'project the picture. Some expansion or contraction of the film is inevitable which makes it necessary to provide facilities forsecuring an exact registry of the respective views with the opening or light passage `when they are brought into position before it. The: securing of the registry between the view and the light opening is ,known asframing the picture. t
My present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is aside view of the interior of invention embodied therein; Fig. 2, is a centralsectional detail of my invention on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is an end view of the swinging arm and mounting or bearing therefor n line'3-,-3 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the` several views.
The cinematograph is installed in a box or casing, 1, in the top' ofwhich is a slotor opening, 2, of suitable sha e and size for r ribbon of film, 3. The strip or ribbon or film is generally provided with sprocket Iholes or perforations upon the edges thereof and after the enf4 trance into the casing or boxing, 1, it is held by means of a spring `pressed roller, 4,
against a continuously driven roller, 5, havmg sprocket teeth, 6, thereon adapted to holes -or aperturesl 1n the edges oft e film enter into and engage with `the .sprocket strip or ribbon.
The driven roller, 5, drawsthe film.` into Specification of Letters Patent.
'11, which issimilar to roller5,
or boxing, 1.
the boxing, and from this roller" the film passes into a loop or bight, 7 between tensioning springs, 8, arranged on each side of the light opening, 9, and a swinging frame, 10,' having a central Opening mounted inside of the casing, light opening.
f From in front of the light o ening 9 and i from the tensioning devices e film passes to an intermittently driven sprocket roller, and which is provided with sprocket teeth, 12, and against which the film ribbon is held by a spring pressed roller, 13, and from. the intermittently driven roller, 11, the film passes in .another bight or loop, 14, to a' continuously driven sprocket roller 15 and spring pressed roller, 16, similar to rollers 5 and 4, and from there the film `leaves the casing or boxing, 1, through a suitably disposed slot, 17, and passes to a take upy (not shown).
From the foregoing brief description it ap ears vthat the rol er, 11, draws hepic'tures into position before the light o ening and my present invention comprises the provision of simple and effective facilities for adjusting the filmv so that the respective pictures on the film strip or ribbon will come to rest in exact` register with the light opening. The detalls of these facilities are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The intermittentl driven roller 11 is sesu-red b y means ofy a set screw 11a to a shaft 11", which is journaled in an elongated bushing`11 an end of which is assembled by a, force bit, or in any other suitable manner, with an aperture 11d the side of the casing- Just inside of the wall .of the casing or boxing, 1, the elongated bushing 11, is provided with an annular flange or shoulder, 11, one side of which contacts the Fitting about the elongated the said ring or hub and bushing, by means of the screw 11, and the said h-ub is held against longitudinal movement on the bushing by means of a collar 11g fitting around 1', and registering with said*` Patented June-20,1916.
intermittently driven the bushing upon the side of said hub-Opposite tothe annular flange 11 which said collar is held in position by a set screw 11. A.Illxtending radially from the said hub, 11.",
- is an arm, 11", in the outer end ofwhich is 11b, and
a shaft 11k extending parallel to the shaft upon this shaft, 11, is mounted a roller, 11, upon which it is held by a washer or' washers 11m and a screw, 11, which screws into the bored and tapped end of said intermittently driven sprocket 11 thereby increasing or' diminishing the length of film between said tensioning device and said sprocket and thereby controlling the portion ofthe film which is moved into position before the light opening.
Having described my invention, what IW claim as new and desire to secure by Letters -Patent is,-
- In a cinematogra h having a light opening, means for hol ing a portion of a film ribbon before said opening, an intermittently driven sprocket for drawing said film therefrom, a rotatable sup rt rotatable about the axis of said sproc et, adjustable means for frictionally securing said support upon its bearing, an arm extending from the said support for rotating' the same upon its bearing and a roller carried by said support into and out of the path between said filmholding means and said s rocket.
In testimony whereof, have hereunto set my hand.
