Description
No. msnm.
Patete'd Sep. 12,1871.
UNITED STATESy PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK CALVERT, OF WABASH CITY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR ELEVATING HAV, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,791, dated September 12, 1871; antedated August 24, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GALVERT, of Tabash city, in the county of Iabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Device for Elevatin g Loads or Veights, ofwhich the following is a specication:
My invention consists in an improved device for elevating and suspending heavy loads, more especially hay and straw in stables and barns or stackingracks. The object of my invention is to provide a more simple and convenient device for holding and suspending such loads, all of which will be more fully described in the following speciiication.
Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the device in position with a load attached.
In the drawing, A represents a hook having its upper end B bent at right or acute angles, and its one end provided With a cleat, G. The square or bent part of the hook is placed over any girder or beam D, Figs. l and 3, more especially in a stable or barn. rEhe deice is provided, at its upper side, with a small notch or auxiliary hook, E, under Which a hay-fork, F, Fig. 5, or a long pole, is placed, by which the device is elevated and put in position over the beam or girder D, thus obviating the necessity of procuring a ladder or other elevating apparatus. A common block and tackle is then hung onto the hook, by Which the load may be very easily hoisted either by hand or a horse.
The advantage of my device over any now in use is that it is very simple and strong, and when placed in position over a girder or beam is not likely to fall from its place, as it is securely held against the girder by the cleat C. This is a very desirable object, as' those Well know who are acquainted with the means and apparatus now employed in stables or barns for the same purpose.
The hook E may be in the shape of a projecting rivet "or bolt, or a loop, and may be attached separately instead of being permanent or a part ofthe main hook.
Having thus fully described my in vention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The device herein described, consisting of the hook A, square part B, cleat C, and auxiliary hook E, when constructed as shown, and for the purpose specified.
FRANK UALVERT. Vitnesses:
HUGH M. STErHENsoN, OSCAR C. Fox.
