Be it known that we, WVAYNE N. Brown and JOHN B. PARSHALL, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operating Mechanism, of which the. following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in door operating mechanism and more particularly to an operator for car doors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be attached to any type of car carrying an air line.
A further object of the invention is the provision of operating mechanism which will prevent jarring of the door in opening and closing.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which,

Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the cylinder on the line AA of Fig. 1. partly in section showing the inlet and exhaust valves together with the operating mechanism and Fig. 7 is a detail of one of the valves.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a platform of a car and 2 a cylinder secured under the platform. A piston 8 operates in the cylinder and has the piston rod 4 secured thereto and extending through one end of the cylinder. To the free end of the rod 1 is attached the door operating lever 5 which in turn is secured to the door, not shown in the drawings. Any connecting means may be used between the lever 5 and the door as this forms no part of our invention and such connecting means might be used as to open a sliding door or a swinging door.

scribed in detail. A branch air pipe 9 is connected to the main line pipe 6 and enters the opposite end of the cylinder as indicated, at 10. Within the branch pipe is a valve 11 the detail construction of which will be later described. At each end of the cylinder is an exhaust pipe 12 having a valve 13 therein the detail construction of which will be later described. The valve 8 in the inlet pipe 6 is adjacent the exhaust valve 13 in one end of the cylinder and a bar 14 connects the inlet and exhaust valves and a rod 15 extends upwardly from the bar 11 and passes through the car platform where it is provided with an enlarged head 16. The valve 11 in the branch air pipe i. adjacent the exhaust valve 13 in the opposite end of the cylinder and the two valves are connected by means of a bar 17 having a rod 18 extending upwardly therefrom and through the platform and provided with the enlarged head 19.
The inlet and exhaust valves are each of the construction shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, comprising a casing 20 having an opening therethrough. as indicated at 21, the edges of which form a valve seat, a
valve 22 and a valve stem 23 connected der 2 as connected to the bottom of the platform by means of the flange 28 formed integral with the cylinder and the bolts 29 passing through the flange and engaging the platform. However, we do not wish to limit ourselves to this particular form of connecting means as any means might be employed for attaching the cylinder to the car.
It will be seen that in constructing a door operating device as above described, we have provided such parts as may be readily attached to any car having an air system secured thereto. When the door is closed the piston 3 will be in the position within the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. lVhen it is desired to open the door the rod 18 is depressed by means of the enlarged head 19 thereby opening the valve in th'ebranch air line admitting air,'at 10, in

In this manner the "air in the forward end of the cylinder will pass out through the exhaust valve and the air will enter the opposite end of the cylinder behind the piston, forcing the same forward and opening the door. The air in the forward'end of the cylinder while'exhausting forms a cushion for the piston thereby preventingjarring or shock when opening the door. VVhen the rod 18 is raised by means of the-spring 27 there will be air left in the rear end of the cylinder where the air has previously entered. To close the door it is only necessary to engage the enlarged head 16 on the rod '15 and press downwardly thereon which will open the valve in the main air line, thereby allowing the air to enter, at 7, in the oppositeend of the cylinder from whichit would to open the door.
' The opening of the inlet valve at the same time'opens the exhaust valve at the end of the cylinder opposite the inlet and allows the air in that end of the cylinder to exhaust as thepiston is forced back to its normal .position and asthe air exhausts it forms a cushion to prevent jarring or shock to the door. Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a support of a motor, said motor comprising a cylinder, a piston operating in the cylinder, an air line entering each end of the cylinder, an inlet valve in the air line at each end of the cylinder, an exhaust valve in each end of the cylinder, a bar connecting the adjacent inlet and outlet valves, a rod passing through the support and connected to said bar for simultaneously operating said valves, and springs connected to the valves and engaging the bar for normally holding the valves in raised position and acting against the pressure of the operating fluid.
2. The combination with a support, of a motor, said motor comprising a cylinder, a piston operating in the cylinder, an air line entering each end of the cylinder, an inlet valve in the air line at each end of the cylinder, an exhaust valve in each end of the cylinder, means for connecting the adjacent inlet and exhaust valves for simultaneously operating the same, and means for holding the valves in a raised position against the force of the exhaust air.
