TENT FOR TRAVELING AND LIKE PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed .Tune 26, 1914. Serial No. 847,533.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHANE PAUL CAsIMTR CLOT, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Grenoble, Isre, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tents for Traveling and like Purposes, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in tents for traveling andv like purposes and comprises the combination with a wheeled vehicle of any kind of a tent of which the vehicle forms the support for the central training of the tent` when it is unfolded, the tent being oldable on the top of this vehicle for transport purposes. The dead weight of a four wheeled vehicle varies say between 1400 and 2400 kilograms so that a tent having as a base and as central framing a vehicle oi this weight, can be obtained having strength and resistance to wind equal to that ot any tents hitherto in use. rlhe tent forms as it were a part of the vehicle and is easily packed or unpacked and very quickly set up or dismounted. The applications of this system are numerous. For troops in the Iield, a tent thus mounted can shelter the material for making bread for two or three wheeled ovens, it can serve as ambulance, kitchen or canteen. It is available for touring purposes or as an entertainment or refreshment tent or the like. Since the arrangements adopted in each case only differ as regards details, a description of an example will suthce to render the invention clear.
rIhe annexed drawing illustrates the combination of the tent with a motor driven carriage.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing the tent in service. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the canvas partly removed. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
The interior of the motor vehicle 1 is arranged in accordance with the service for which it is required, but has its roof reserved for the tent and its accessories. The roof is provided at the front and back with iron chairs 2, 2, carrying the ridge bar 3, on which the canvas cover is rolled, during transport. The chairs 2 are articulated at 7 to allow of reducing their height during transport. In use they are maintained upright by pins c arranged around the articulated joint. The ridge bar 3 is further supported at its center by a vertical support 4 provided with oblique stays 5, 5. The roof of the vehicle is further provided with a rim or casing 6 intended to contain the accessory parts and the tools intended for mounting the tent. A
The canvas covering Fig. 3 is composed of two trapezoidal pieces 8, 8, and of two triangular pieces 9, 9. It is fixed by straps on the ridge bar 3 on the tour struts 10, 10 and on four rows of wall plates 12, 12. The struts 10 shown in detail in Fig. 4 are in two pieces hinged together at ct and are hooked at one end on the ends of ridge bar 3 and at the other end on corner posts 11 sunk in the ground; they are supported at their `centers by stays 13 supported on the vehicle.
The wall plates 12 shown in detail in Fig. 5 are divided into lengths of about two meters and are mounted on the corner posts 11 and on other intermediate posts 14 of sufiicient number toform the tour sides of the tent. Each of the posts 11 and 14 is provided at the top with a tensioning cord 15 and pulley Z) attachable to an iron spike 16 driven obliquely into the ground at a suitable distance from the foot of the post.
The sides of the tent are formed of rectangular curtains 17 and of angle pieces 18 hooked to the w'all plates and held down by wooden pegs of the usual kind. The canvas roof and curtains are provided with the usual fittings, eyelets, buckles, straps, etc., for xing them to various points of attachment tothe frame.
To erect the tent, the vehicle being conducted to the spot selected, the vehicle brakes are put on and the wheels conveniently locked, the material packed on the roof is removed with the exception of the rooting canvas which remains fixed to the ridge-bar 3, the ridge bar is lifted and the position of the chairs 2 is secured by the pins c. The four corner posts are then placed in position with their struts 10 on which the roof: canvas is stretched. The iron pegs 16 are then driven in and the intermediate posts 14 set up and their wall plates 12, these being fixed in accordance with the roofing canvas which is then stretched by means of the cords 15. The curtains are then hooked on, being held on the ground by means of wooden pegs. The dismo-unting is eifected by the same operations carried out in reverse order.
It is to be remarked that the tent thus constituted has a rigid frame allowing the arrangement of all the interior accessories,
furniture, and 'forms a habitable apartment able to be connected by 'covered passages With other similar tents containing the kitchen, lavatory, bath room and other ad vehicle, a laterally swinging pivoted support mounted upon the same, a foldable.tent, said support forming a central rest for the tent when setup, foldabl'e struts for bracing the tent in conjunction with .the ground and the vehicle, and means for rigidifying the tent structure.
- 2.*In combination, a vehicle, chairs pivotally supported by said vehicle, a ridge-bar ridge-bar to be raised for elevating the tent, and-adapted to be lowered for lowering the tent and folding the same, and means carried by said vehicle for containing said tent when folded.
3. In combination a vehicle, foldable chairs supported by said vehicle, means for maintaining said chairs in the unfolded position, a detachable ridge-bar supported by said chairs, detachable roof struts connected at one end to said ridge-bar, detachable stays connecting said struts With said vehicle, horizontal wall-plate members to which the other ends of said struts are connected, posts supporting said wall-plate members, canvas covering supported by said ridge bar, struts, wallY plate members and posts and adapted when in position to form a tent freely sur rounding said vehicle, and means carried by said vehicle for containing said canvas and said supporting members when folded and detached. In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two Witnesses. f' supported by said chairs, a foldable tent f adapted to freely surround said vehicle when unfolded and supported centrally byy said ridge-bar, said chairs permitting the y 'STEPHANE PAUL OASIMIR CLO'l.
