DRIVING BAND OB. TAPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1916.
Application filed January 30, 1914. Serial No. 815,448.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SMITH, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at oodworth, Ingrow. Keighley, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Bands or Tapes, of which the following description, together with the annexed sheet of drawings, is a specification.
In the production of driving belts or bands for varied purposes, but especially of the class known as driving tapes for spinning, twisting and like machines used in the production of yarns or threads of fibrous substances, it is desirable that while maintaining the strength of said tapes their flexibility shall not be interfered with since it is essential that the same shall be sufficiently flexible to conform to the contours or peripheries of the driving pulleys or whirls (which are of comparatively small diameter) to which they have to transmit motion.
My invention consists in constructing these belts and tapes and carrying out the method of jointing the same together as hereinafter described so as to secure the desired strength and flexibility.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the formation of a belt or tape constructed or woven in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents the two ends of tape cut or shaped so that they may be jointed together as hereinafter described. Fig. 3 is a plan of a similar formation of joint to that shown by Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing a small driving pulley on a spindle with a tape partly encircling the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a modification in the construction of my improved driving belt or tape.
In accordance with my invention instead of producing a tape or belt of sufiicient thickness to withstand the whole strain in a single strand, I produce the tape in two parts a, a and b, b, one part as a, a being superposed or laid over the other part b, b the two being secured together somewhat in a central position a between their outer edges and throughout their whole lengths. This securing together of the two tapes a, a and b, b is preferably effected by the process of weaving in which the two sides a, b and a, b are produced separately, while by the weft catching the warp threads at the part a about midway between the two edges the two separate fabrics are secured to each other in this part.
Any form or order of treading in the loom may be followed to attain the object desired and one shuttle alone may be employed or two ormore shuttles may be made use of as is well-known to those having knowledge of this process of weaving.
It is obvious that the two tapes or belts whiclrare bound together may be produced separately and afterward stitched or sewn together longitudinally at the part c approximately midway between their two edges.
In the production of belts in accordance with my invention the edges a, a and b, b may be of considerable thickness as shown by Fig. 5, while the central part 0 may be of less thickness and comparatively flexible whereby strength is given and yet the flexibility of the whole is retained.
When jointing together the two ends of the tapes or belts produced in accordance with my invention so as to form them endless for the purpose of transmitting motion to the parts they have to drive, as to the small driving pulley (Z upon the spindle e, the parts a. and a on one (say the upper) side of the belt are cut away somewhat as shown by Figs. 2 and 3 while the parts 6 and'b (say on the underside) are retained. On the other hand the parts I) and b are cut away at the other end of the tape so as to form them to fit over the parts retained at a, a on the other ends 6, b of the tape to produce a jointing to correspond in thickness to the two parts forming the body of the tape, while to secure the greatest strength at this jointing, one part is made longer than another that is to say, the part a is cut short while the part a extends beyond said shorter part and the part I) extends beyond the part b, so that in being jointed together as shown by Fig. 3, the out parts 7, f, f P, of the tape do not lie opposite each other, but occupy different positions in the length thereof, thus producing at every part of the joint approximately three quarters the strength of that of the body part of the tape.
Such being the object of my invention what I claimisz- 1. A driving belt formed of superposed members woven together along a longitudinal line intermediate of their edges, said edges being free.
2. A driving belt formed of superposed members united intermediate'of their longitudin al edges, edges free, the middle portionofthe completed belt being of less thickness than'the edge portions.
